he's been there every week. he's even learned a couple of words in draconic. his speech is rough around the edges and unrefined, but she doesn't mind - it's meant to be that way. it's a language crafted from the shaking of scales, the draw of claw against stone. it's not meant to be beautiful.

lyune rises to his feet when caleb approaches, showing an attentiveness to the introductions that he hasn't shown yet. she pats his side and offers a wave to the ranger.

"you all warmed up, harcourt? we're not going to go easy on you."

Now here was a familiar sight: freya morningstar, her snow-white hair braided and sun-bright, standing beside the veteran Salamence in all his grizzled glory. They were a staple now, a foundational part of every week, the reason his muscles burned and his bones ached and his life had something that felt suspiciously like purpose again.[break][break]
"Fekiikiri," he attempted, sounding out each guttural syllable. A raised hand, a lop-sided grin. The best students weren't perfect; they were passionate.[break][break]
He released Lyra, and realized that this was the first time she would be meeting Freya and her dragon. So much of his training with Freya had been focused on his own fitness and readiness. They'd only just begun to bring his team into it. And, then, of course, there were all the lessons that had nothing to do with fighting.[break][break]
"Freya, Lyune. This is Lyra. My oldest friend."[break][break]
The Lapras eyed the Councilwoman with keen eyes the color of the sky just after it has rained. She seemed to recognize a kinship with Lyune, though she herself was not a dragon. She bowed her head to him - not so low as to appear submissive, but not so shallow as to insult.[break][break]
"By all means, give us your best."

it's still too human-sounding, the way he rounds out his syllables and hits his consonants. she corrects him on it often, but it's a change that will only come about with practice. already, he's made leaps and bounds, and has a few words to work with in his dictionary.

his greetings is one of them and lyune chuffs in response. he shifts his wings. his scales make a shuk-shuk sound and freya tosses him a lopsided smile.

"lyra, it's a pleasure to meet you," she says. lyune does not bow back - a dragon does not bow, but his tail flicks in appreciation. he spreads his paws apart, claws flexing, and freya senses his apprehension. the lapras is part ice-type, and from the looks of it, she's strong.

they'll have to be careful.

but the last few opponents have been fae. here, he allows his draconic spirit to thrum with power. purple embers spark in his maw and upon a hiss from freya, he lets loose a dragon pulse.

Before he'd begun his training regimen with Freya, Caleb had learned a thing or two about dragons from Melody Miro. Dragons were prideful creatures, and though you could teach them to be tactful, cautious, and defensive, their default state was often one of pure, unbridled power. For good reason, naturally: they were quite often unstoppable.[break][break]
Except, there was one way to reliably wrangle their egos. Besides the dangers of fighting their own kind, there was one type of Pokemon in particular that could humble them.[break][break]
And Caleb had spent a lifetime befriending one.[break][break]
Lyra tanked the draconic energy, letting it absorb into her great shell. Then she opened her maw, and summoned a burst of light, which instantly solidified into a glistening wintery white. The ICE BEAM carved a path through the dirt, freezing over grass and stone alike, until it made contact with Lyune.[break][break]

blue sparks off of lyra's shell and freya once again beholds a feat of endurance by caleb. his partner pokemon does not shrink or cower in the face of the grizzled veteran. lyune isn't surprised in the slightest. the stream of energy dies down while he's in the midst of lifting himself into the air.

he nearly escapes the grasping veins of ice, but a glacier crawls steadfastly up his hind legs. his wings slam down into the ground, front legs coming down onto the earth. his bulk cracks the ice, but that's not enough to shake him from winter's grasp.

his thrumming does not die down and soon the earth answers his call, trembling beneath his feet. more cracks and fissures spider out around the ice and with a malignant roar, he frees himself. the earthquake blasts apart the frozen landscape and sends shrapnel flying back in lyra's face.

Caleb found himself impressed with Lyune. Many younger, less experienced dragons might have taken far more damage from such a powerful ice move, but the veteran had reacted with a fierce tenacity and seasoned quickness. Caleb watched carefully; he himself would be taking on the great dragon in due time, and without Lyra backing him up. It was one of the final trials he knew freya morningstar would throw at him.[break][break]
Luckily for Caleb, his partner Pokemon did not need much guidance and direction, leaving him free to take copious mental notes. She'd fought by his side for nearly three decades, so she knew what to do. As the ground beneath Lyra began to tremble violently, turning into a full-on quaking as each second passed, she immediately summoned a torrent of HYDRO PUMP beneath her, raising her up out of harm's way. Then she directed the wave even higher, after Lyune.[break][break]

a newfound respect creeps into freya's gaze. she's shed the necessity of commanding her dragons on the field nearly a decade ago and there are not many other who have managed the same, and with such surety. but there is a bond woven between caleb and his lapras, one that rivals her own.

and so she's rightfully scared of the hydro pump. her hand goes to the mega band woven in her braid and the salamencite nestled within it begins to glow.

lyune thrashes, wings rippling as his skeleton shifts within him. flesh knits itself together and steel pauldrons spurt from his chest. the hydro pump slams against the armor as he tucks his limbs and races straight towards lyra with newfound fury.

Lyune grew, transforming into a fortified version of himself, armored and majestic. Perhaps this would be the edge he needed to stand against Lyra's onslaught of icy waves. Caleb had never seen the Mega Evolution of a Salamence before, and he had to admit, it was intimidating.[break][break]
If Lyra was also intimidated, she didn't show it. She readied herself, head lowered slightly, then charged Lyune. Mist coalesced around her, shrouding her in a fog-like shield. Energy began to charge at the tip of the horn on her head, until a DRAGON PULSE blasted forth just as she crashed into the massive Lyune in a brave, but perhaps foolhardy, full body tackle.[break][break]

the dragon pulse burns through his shape, rippling over scales shorn and thrown into the air. his wings are ablaze and his soul shines a brilliant, vibrant purple as he and lyra collide.

and there he stays, front paws emerging from behind his pauldrons, claws scraping against lyra's hard shell. he towards over the lapras; energy bisects him, but it does not tear him apart. he looks down at her, sides heaving, and then past her, at caleb.

a low thrum and freya's brows arc. she strides forward, knowing the battle is over, and after a moment lyune drops back down to all fours. he touches the bottom of his maw to the crest of lyra's head and turns, tail dragging behind him.

freya brushes the side of his face as she walks by him.

"well, harcourt, you've done the impossible. you and lyra have earned his respect."

Lyra bowed before the great dragon. She was not one of his kin, but she understood his ways. Respect was hard-won and often rare amongst his kind. To have earned it was a gift, one she did not intend to take for granted. Once he had moved away, she raised her head once more to regard Lyune's trainer - the white-haired warrior to whom her own Caleb deferred. Dark eyes assessed freya morningstar, and then Lyra bowed to her, too.[break][break]
To Caleb, the Lapras preened - only once his hand touched her neck, did she allow herself a measure of pride.[break][break]
"Vinxa," Caleb said to Lyune, drawing it out so as to get the inflection right. Thank you.[break][break]
He turned to Freya. "Lyra is special. I befriended her as a child. She has been with me through...all of it. The good and the bad. We escaped Kanto together."[break][break]
The Ranger grinned, gloating - just a little.[break][break]
"Don't worry, this doesn't change a thing. I'll see you next week, for the usual."
