He grinned as he arrived at the battlefield, tilting his head at the man standing opposite to him.

"Oh? Bird Dad?" He called out. "Good to see ya doing well, Ivanov!"

He didn't see Alexei as often as he used to, what with retiring from being a gym leader and all. The man must've truly have found his calling, staying in his position for as long as he had.

"Shall we give the audience a good show?"

“Oh, definitely. I’m packing one of my best ‘mons along for this. Are you bringing along one of your Orbeetle armada?” he ventured a guess; because honestly, as much as he knew the ex-Gym Leader, the younger man across the arena had a heavy preference for Bug-type Pokémon.

“Let’s give ‘em all a good show!”

And just like that, Kyouya the Braviary would come flying down from the sky in a two-point landing; spreading his wings wide the moment the avian would land.

“Let’s go!”

Oh right, lam logan. "Man, flying fans are eating good this season."

He really had let the bug fandom down when he retired... No time to think about that.

"Yeah, let's! Kama! Get in there!" Kama didn't need to be told twice— reeling back her head, she released a positively ear-splitting roar before launching towards her opponent, zeroing into them quickly before suddenly leaping high in the air— and coming down towards them, attempting to goomba-stomp them into the ground.

TL;DR:
Kama used Acrobatics!

The moment the Scyther came out, he knew he was going to be in for a good time.

“Go on, Kyouya! Show ‘em what you’re made of!” he cheered from his side of the arena as the blue-plumed Braviary spread his wings wide, before countering the incoming Scyther with a surprise Aerial Ace attack!

“What made you retire, man? Then drop off the face of the earth for a while?” he asked Doug when he had a chance.

He scoffed indignantly at that, puffing up his chest. "Oi, I didn't drop off the face of the earth." Yes you did, though it wasn't the writer's plans...

He waved his hand dismissively, clicking his tongue. "I was just getting a lil' too busy to stay in the circuit. I couldn't make time for enough challengers anymore, so I submitted my resignation."

And canceled his original plans regarding the gym, too.

Kama grunted as she raised a scythe, the blow sending her hurtling back to the earth before she could land of the Braviary. Spinning around to regain her balance, she darted along the ground in a zig zag pattern, each shift in her movements getting emphasized by booming claps.

Each boom sent walls of wind hurtling towards the Braviary, trying to bring it back down to earth.

TL;DR:
Kama used Vacuum Wave!

“Maybe it was a good thing I got your badge too, back in the previous tournament!” he cackled, referencing the Hoenn Star Tournament where they had met under extremely strange circumstances that involved an aerial race with body pillows being dropped from everywhere…

“So what’ve you been doing these days?” he asked the other; all this while the Scyther and Braviary were exchanging blows.

While the Scyther’s attack was meant to be so fast it would go first, the Braviary had other ideas; suddenly flapping his wings once and conjuring up a surprise avalanche of boulders in the form of a Rock Slide!

"It was a good chance to spread out the best badge." He mused with a grin, before suddenly pointing his pokeball at Kama.

Things weren't going great for them, so best to give her a little boost; should be fair. The opponent had terastalized after all, no?

Kama would soon find herself grown to massive size— which she used to try and slap the Braviary back down to earth.

"As for me— I'm a medic now!"

The moment the Scyther started growing to comically-humongous proportions, the lines on his forehead creased for a few moments—didn’t the other know how dangerous it was?!

He… he would want to have a few words with Doug after the match, however the immediate concern was this!

The Braviary let out a squawk of dismay, before switching to a surprise Aerial Ace moment in an attempt to try and hack away at the now comically-large Scyther…

Was today going to be one of those days?

Kama seemed to enjoy having the upperhand for once, a grin stretching over her lips as she took swipes at the Braviary with glee, trying to slap it out of the sky like a fly.

Doug had a semblance of an idea of how dangerous dynamaxed pokemon were, but in the context of 1v1, it didn't seem much worse than mega evolution, Z-moves or even terastalization to him.

Which is to say—

"Gooo Kama!" He cheered at his scyther cheerfully, pumping his fist in the air.

TL;DR:
Doug used Dynamax.
Kama used Close Combat!

Safe to say, since Doug wasn’t a Gym Leader anymore, he had no idea of the meeting that was happening between Gym Leaders and that they were going to be discussing things—one of which happened to be the ‘kaiju phenomenon’ as Alex here called it in the back of his mind.

“Doug!” he called from his side of the arena. “Are you free after this battle? I have to talk to you about something!”

Meanwhile, the Braviary was sweating bullets; how was he going to make the Scyther shrink back down to its normal size without causing a lot of collateral damage?!

(For he’d seen the Dynamax phenomenon in the alternate Galar—didn’t the other know how dangerous it was?!)

The avian then decided to switch tactics a little bit; for instead of trying Sky Drop (because how was that going to work) the avian had to swap at the very last second and used Rock Slide on the humongous Scyther!

Kama cried out as rocks rained upon her, crossing her scythes before herself as she hunkered down.

The rocks battered at her form, but she remained stalwart despite the pain. Rocks were one of those things bug types hated a lot— specially flying bug types.

With an angry roar, Kama spread out her scythes wide, generating an inwards vacuum around herself.

TL;DR:

The use of Vacuum Wave like a literal—ooh, that was a clever move from the gigantic Scyther, however his mind was still flashbacking to the potential collateral damage an extremely large Pokémon was capable of—

“Doug! It’s kind of important!” he followed up before gesturing at the large Scyther with both his arms spread out wide; hoping the other would understand it was a bit of an urgent matter that concerned the ‘kaiju phenomenon’.

Back out at the field, the Braviary was drawn in by the suction power of the Scyther’s attack (due to the size; bigger attack meant bigger force of gravity) however he would allow himself to be drawn in; before—

Attempting to catch the Scyther off-guard with a surprise Aerial Ace on the larger-than-life Scyther!

The Braviary, somehow, had managed to scrape out a win against the odds—but fact of the matter was that there was something else that was nagging him to speak with the younger man.

After he’d climbed onto stage for the requisite footage and all that, he quickly recalled his Braviary before leaning in to whisper to the other, “Don’t you know about the possible side-effects of turning your Pokémon kaiju-sized?” before tilting his head to the side of the stage; better for them to clear out of the area right away for the next battle to take place.

They could talk about this while not on the stage, right?
