“Oh, well, I never had the energy to commit to the bit this much,” she replied, rubbing the back of her head as Lucario took the field in front of her. She had tried the whole cape look for a while after basically rushing off to battle, back when she’d just started her journey.

"I'm not sure of what you mean." He said, his smile unshaken as a gust of wind made the long coat draped over his shoulders flap dramatically. "But yes— this will be a good match up."

Both of these pokemon's secondary typings negated their weaknesses and strengths rather effectively.

With a swipe of the arm, he commanded Lancelette to take flight.

"Show them what you've got, Lancelette."

Rising high in the sky, Lancelette dove towards the Lucario, her form enveloped in blazing flames in the shape of an eagle.

Honestly, had she been this cringe too? Megan rolled her eyes, though there was something for which only the nice word Fremdschämen was fitting, which didn’t really translate well into English. Hoensian. Pokespeak.

Something like that. Either way, she wasn’t going to try and teach this old dog new tricks. So, instead, she just had Lucario ready itself. “Set up a Sword’s Dance, try to get away in time if possible.” He knew how to do that and would probably manage to get away with a glancing blow or better. That was the usual style.

Vs Megan Whitmore

Unaware of the judgement going through the younger woman's mind, Gwyar kept his gaze exclusively on Lancelette.

The two pokemon clashed briefly, with the Lucario getting the better of Lancelette as they exchanged blows. Briefly, Gwyar considered switching gears then and there; but decided to withhold for the moment. Her pride would be hurt if he interfered too early into the fight.

Best to just see how things developed first.

Having gotten hit with a few good blows, the Corviknight spunt as she rose in the air, accelerating as she attempted some ranged combat while gathering her wits, her shadow surging from beneath her to attack at the canine.

TL;DR:
-Lancelette used Agility, then Power Trip.

Ah. Of course, the flier would just fly away. Megan had no idea how the setup of this tournament would work with those. If she did not have any ranged options, would the flier just win by default if they had one? In a normal match, you usually could do a switch or something at least.

Then again, this tournament had weird rules, it was probably possible to just win by never even getting to the other.

Anyway, they did not exactly have a ton of options, so she did not have to order Lucario to do anything. He would simply hurl an Aura Sphere straight up at the flying knight, while trying to get away from that pesky shadow.

The Aura sphere landed, though perhaps with less effect than one would hope. It did manage to bring Lancelette lower down, the avian briefly entering free fall.

However, she spread her wings wide before crashing into the ground, her trajectory swerving radically as she flew towards the Lucario in a straight line once again.

At that moment, Gwyar raised his fist in the air, causing the Corviknight to mega evolve mid-charge.

TL;DR:
-Gwyar used Mega evolution.

It was falling down. Good, then it got into range. Well, it did so voluntarily, but that was just as well. As long as Lucario could actually get to the opponent, it could do something. That was good enough.

Deciding to try and meet the opponent head-on, Lucario surged towards it, not faltering even when that familiar light did envelop the flying knight. That did not change a bit about the intent, after all, which was to deliver its own barrage of blows, to join in on the mega evolution

Vs Megan Whitmore

The two mega evolved pokemon clash for a bit, their blows making the earth quake and nearby stone shatter.

Ultimately, Lancelette isn't able to put enough pressure on her opponent to seize the advantage, forced to beat back a hasty retreat— one which her 5 steel drones assist in, flying in to strike at random at the Lucario while she gathers her bearings.

Her wings glow with the glimmer of steel as she prepares for close quarters combat once again, leaping high in the sky before swooping down to strike at her opponent from above once again, using her steel drones to keep her opponent busy.

Hah. Lucario prevailed. For now. But sadly, the other was making a hasty retreat up into the air, leaving some kind of leftover attack to badger Lucario while the steely bird was licking its wounds. Which was always bad when it happened.

Silly flying types. Silly rules that would put a melee fighter against that without any option to switch or such. Megan sighed. It could not be helped. They just had to finish this fight the old-fashioned way.

Which meant having to wait for the bird swooping down again. Until then, Lucario weaved through the drone attacks, utilizing a sword’s dance that it would try to capitalize on when the other was in range again – which meant doing its best to try and dodge the incoming attack from above, when it inevitably happened.

Mega evolution comes to an end, with both pokemon now at the end of their ropes.

Gwyar observes the panting Lancelette with a critical eye. The fights so far in the tournament have been helpful; Lancelette's tendencies for close quarters have been noted, and will need to be reassessed. Whether he would find ways to teach her to be more effective up close or rebuild her toolkit to allow her to maintain her distance, he wasn't sure yet.

Her own preferences needed to be taken into account, after all.

Once again— Lancelette chose to get upclose. She wanted to end the battle on her terms— and her terms were Brave Bird, a hazy blaze surrounding her before she launched towards her opponent.

It was kind of fortunate that this bird liked to come up close and personal. Otherwise they might have struggled after all. They had no choice but to spam Aura Sphere if their opponent had actually taken to keeping their distance. This way though? There was at least a chance.

After Mega-Evolving, they both were apparently winded, but that was good. At least this fight would be properly ended, not just some random VP loss due to not hitting quite as hard as the opponent. It would be good. Hence, Lucario readied his stance and kept an eye on his opponent, remembering a fight much like this one earlier in the day. And just like back then, he prepared himself to welcome the other with a Close Combat.

The last clash was climatic— well worth the money being paid by the viewers. The arena quaked, the soil upheaved, and the shockwave rattled the seats as it spread across the stadium.

And then it was over. Lancelette remained standing despite her injuries, despite her exhaustion, panting deeply as she turned around and limped back to her trainer, unable to flap her wings.

Gwyar winced at the sight, patting her gently on the neck, though his smile remained.

"You were wonderful." He praised softly, dragging his hand over her wings with a careful eye. "Rest now. You'll be rid of the pain before long."

It was a quick trip to the Stadium's pokemon center from there.

Returning her to her pokeball, Gwyar turned his gaze to Megan and smiled at the young woman.

"Thank you for the match. Your partner and yourself, too, were excellent." He said, bowing politely. "Have a good rest of the day, young miss."
