The air was hardly breathable where they were in that moment. Zoë had held a handkerchief over her face as Devereux, her absol, walked along beside her. Jinx wasn't far behind, stepping along and looking at everything almost like a toddler. Scotch sat atop Zoë's head, looking around with his mouth slightly open as he gawked at their surroundings in obvious wonder. Having pokemon in many ways was like having children in Zoë's limited experience. She'd never had pokemon before Devereux. Even in Lavender town her mother had disliked them quite a bit and so they'd never had even one around.

Zoë jogged to catch up to Ever. "Hey!" she called out. "Where are we going?"

She'd followed her blindly, expecting for it to be clear what she had in mind as soon as they were far enough. But looking around, Zoë still wasn't sure.

Lavaridge Town was somewhere he hadn't been to often, not having much use for going to the hot springs. But a mission was a mission, and as a ranger, he wanted to be as much help as he could be.

The person he was working with was someone he hadn't worked with yet, a newer face among the ranks possibly. He wasn't entirely sure because he hadn't had the chance to learn the names of everyone who worked among the rangers, only knowing the names of rangers he had worked with previously or some of the higher-ups.

Usually, he would just fly to the destination, meeting his partner at the mission site. But wanting the exercise, he had decided to meet up with his partner before the mission and walk the rest of the way to Lavaridge. It helped that walking was a nice distraction from his thoughts, especially when the woman struck up a conversation with him.

Realizing he was going fast enough that she had been struggling to keep up, he slowed his pace a bit before addressing her.

"We're to protect nearby wildlife around Lavaridge and provide medical care if needed. Apparently, due to the appearance of the Silent Icelands, the weather patterns in Hoenn have changed, as well as the volcanic activity of Mount Chimney. Because of that, the volcanic ash that comes from Mount Chimney is being blown into Lavaridge. We've been tasked with helping to deal with the problem," he explained, trying to keep his explanation as short as possible.

But it was still a pretty long-winded explanation, and now his throat hurt.

Luckily, from all the talking and not from the ash polluting the air. Because like her, he had his mouth covered. However, unlike her, he had decided to tie a bandanna around the lower half of his face so he could have his hands free.[break] zoë crow

Zoë couldn't help but huff at Ever's response. She had known they were going to help with things at Lavaridge. What she was wondering was why they were so far from the city and where they were going exactly. Zoë refrained from rolling her eyes and instead nodded her thanks when Ever slowed his pace so she could keep up with ease. Devereux continued walking next to her, staring straight ahead without taking notice of either ranger accompanying him.

"Yes, I know that." she said. "Are we just...searching for a pokemon to help then?" Zoë wasn't technically a new ranger. At least, not an inexperienced one. But still, this was the kind of mission she was usually assigned. And to be honest...she was a bit lost without a more direct objective to accomplish. She held the handkerchief to her face and turned her gaze to Ever. "I'm sorry. I'm not usually so..." Angry? Irritated? Confused?

Devereux huffed, as if agreeing with her. Zoë shot the absol a glare.

"That's right, so keep your eyes and ears open," he would tell her, his gaze scanning the area around them, on the lookout for any injured Pokémon as well as anything that could be dangerous. Not that a hurt Pokémon could be dangerous. When wild Pokémon were hurt, they could be prone to being more aggressive.

At the apology he would just wave it off without looking at her. People apologizing to him made him uncomfortable, even after three years away from his dad.

They had been trekking for a bit after their small conversation when he thought he heard something. But it was hard to hear over their footsteps, so he held up a hand. "Stop," he said as he stopped walking himself.

Now that he didn't have to listen to their footsteps, he heard it again. A Pokémon cry.

"Do you hear that?" he asked, not bothering to look at her since he was trying to pinpoint where it was coming from.

It only took a matter of minutes for Zoë to get the sense that Ever was as awkward around people as she was. At her apology, the man simply waved her off and kept walking. Zoë didn't mind traveling in silence, so she kept her mouth closed, her eyes peeled, and her ears open.

They went a ways further when suddenly, Ever stopped and held up a hand. Zoë came to a halt and so did Devereux. She heard it as soon as her foot falls faded away. The subtle cry coming from the woods to their right. Ever took off and Zoë wasn't far behind. Devereux bounded through the brush next to her as they made their way through the forest.

It wasn't long before they came across a dark form. A pokemon with red eyes and a black mane of hair that ran down the length of its body. A mightyena. But this one had been burned by something, a large gash left in its flank, the hair singed off and the skin underneath red and swollen.

Seeing the injured Mightyena, he immediately held up his hands, palms facing out, to show he wasn't holding anything before slowly starting to approach. As a wild Pokémon, especially an injured one, one could never predict how it might act, so it was best to approach any wild Pokémon with caution.

Seeing no negative reaction from the wild Mightyena, he approached until he was close enough to see the extent of the injury before crouching down. The injury seemed pretty bad, and he wasn't sure if Celestia would be able to heal the full extent of the injury without tiring herself out. So it would be best for Celestia to heal the Mightyena enough that he wouldn't be in as much pain and call in reinforcements from the medical team in Lavaridge Town.

"Do you mind calling this in to the rest of the medical team in Lavaridge? The injury is bad enough that my healer will probably tire herself out trying to heal the full extent of it," he told the other ranger as he took out a Pokéball, releasing a Shiny Galarian Rapidash from its contents.

"Heal him up, but don't overdo it. We'll probably still have to do healing sessions on other injured Pokémon we come across," he told the proud unicorn Pokémon as she lowered her horn towards the Mightyena and started to use Heal Pulse on the Mightyena.[break] zoë crow
