Monday, 7:33 p.m., Mossdeep City's Community Stadium.

The lights shone done brightly upon the dry soil battlefield. Yet another challenger's pokemon was K.O'd before the crowd of mossdeep citizens, stadium staff and fellow challengers.

All challengers were allowed to sit on the stands and spectate the matches before their own. It was a good learning opportunity, for the newbies, and a good intel gathering opportunity, for the experienced.

Briefly, the Gym Leader asked the challenger a number of questions, before dismissing them.

No badge. Over 20 challengers had been sorted in the past hour; a badge had yet to be given.

There was no preamble nor wait. As soon as the previous challenger was done, the next one was called in.

"Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki." The Gym Leader said after, raising his gaze to the stands. "Come."

Returning a Doublade to its pokeball, the Gym Leader sent out a Duraludon in its place.

"You may begin."

A young girl, barely an adult, stands in the spotlight next. Confident smirk on her face, she shields her eyes from the bright lights with the brim of her hat. The black serpent always at her side flicks her tongue in and out, watching her opposition expectantly as she awaits fear to creep in to pounce upon.[break][break]

"You ready, girl?"[break][break]

She watches the severe man across the battlefield, more stern than even Navy at his worst. At least Navy can crack a joke, knows how to have fun. This knight, though... remains to be seen whether he's all-business or not.[break][break]

"Hey. Since you're a knight an' all, here's a question for ya![break][break]

"What knight invented the round table?"[break][break]

Sumire slithers to the center of the arena, eyeing the dragon. A tense look, intimidating presence in her gaze, as she lets out a terrifying hiss and splays the pattern on her belly to start the match. [break][break]

The Duraludon remained still, firm. Rooted to the earth like a mountain.

That or paralyzed in fear. Either or.

An unholy shrieking came roaring out of the Duraludon's tightly shut maw, the mixture of fear and an inability to move coming together to become terror, its internal screaming reverberating inside its steel body to create a metallic screeching.

Her smirk grows wider as she follows her snake on the ground, slithering closer. She's nearly hunched down, as she delivers her own answer. [break][break]

"You were supposed to answer Sir Cumference! [break][break]

"... Sumi, NOW!"[break][break]

The black snake reels back, snapping her head forth fast as a bullet. The heat summons beads of sweat on the girl's forehead half a battlefield away as the snake's fangs set alight just before contact with silver. The resulting conflagration consumes the entire area.[break][break]

The Gym leader laughed.

"Hah! Is that so?" He said, smiling. If he had been evaluating her for dad jokes, her score would've been pretty decent.

As a large conflagration ignited the battlefield, the blonde's coat flapped dramatically behind him.

"Hoh!" He uttered with an appreciative smile, his arm rising to block dust and smoke from rushing into his eyes. "I can see why you brought a pure poison type before me so confidently now."

The steel type was oft considered the best defensive typing by professionals who liked to sweat the details. However, it did have some rather key weaknesses— fire a rather practical one among them.

"Good misdirection. Well done." Gwyar said, crossing his arms as he nodded, praising the trainer's planning. "However."

The dust settled, revealing the dragon of steel. It still stood— damaged but not too worse for the wear.

"Duraludon is both steel and dragon."

It's steel was somewhat singed, but— the draconic blood flowing behind the curtain of iron seemed to push away at searing heat. Physical defenses were the duraludon's species greatest forte, to boot.

"Your earlier gambit has paid off, though." He said after a moment, nodding appreciatively once again.

The Duraludon had not retaliated yet— the paralysis had kicked in at an opportune time for their opponent.

"Let's continue, then. I do hope you did not put all your eggs on that one basket."

-Duraludon took damage.
-Duraludon is paralyzed.

The arbok recoils backward, hissing again before she snaps forward with another bite, this time sharp jagged edges like icicles aiding her attack. A layer of frost collects at the point of impact, trying to freeze her foe in place.[break][break]

To rapidly heat, then cool... how would the blacksmith treat that?[break][break]

He nodded.

"You did." He conceded. "Can you take proper advantage of it?"

Brute force wasn't a wrong choice by default. It worked oft enough, specially in pokemon battling. If chipped away for long enough, any wall could be brought done.

Provided the wall didn't hit back hard enough to end the fight.

The next strike landed yet again, a layer of frost beginning to form over the dragon's steel scales. Its body shivered against the freezing fangs, rattling hard enough to crack the ice— Wait. Those were not shivers.

They were rattling.

Its entire body trembled, faster and more intensely by the second, as if internal quakes wracked at its form, until—

A booming crack thundered across the battlefield as the steel that formed the Duraludon's scales seemingly burst with power, a crater forming beneath its feet as severe kinetic force exploded outwards and pushed back against their opponent.

"Rethink your approach." He counseled simply, arms folding behind his back in a militaristic fashion. "Consider Duraludon's strengths and weaknesses. Her current state."

A mighty glacier by default. Paralyzed, too. Even if it didn't trigger every time— paralysis was severely slowing down an already sluggish opponent.

Duraludon took damage.
Duraludon used Metal Burst.

"Damn it," the girl curses under her breath. [break][break]

The snake stares back at the silver drake, sensing the trepidation in her master's voice. She watches, waiting, still feeling the aftermath of the shockwave rippling through her. [break][break]

"Riddle of your own, huh? Somethin' tells me it ain't gonna be quite as fun!"[break][break]

She wracks her brain a moment, reading the layout of the field. A crater with an immobile dragon at its center. Super-heated hide, since frozen. Pressing the attack sends it back their way, but... now should be the point that the metal is most brittle.[break][break]

"... Worth a shot, anyway.[break][break]

"Sumire!"[break][break]

The snake perks up at the mention of her name, readying herself for her master's orders.[break][break]

"Bigger they are, harder they fall, right? This thing can't move an inch! Bet it can't pick itself up, either! You thinkin' what I'm thinkin'?"[break][break]

Tsubaki takes an orb in hand. Glowing with the light of possibility, the light of dreams, she casts it unto her black serpent. Jeweled crown falls from the heavens, bestowing the snake an armor of dragon's scales.[break][break]

"Dragon tail! Knock it off balance!"[break][break]

Sumire darts to the side, faster than the slowed duraludon can turn, circling the crater. When she's sure the drake can't see her, she springs into the air, the elevation of the upended earth giving her the height necessary to bring her tail wreathed in azure flames down over its head.[break][break]

"Hoh." The Gym Leader utters as the challenger's pokemon is suited up in a crown of tera crystals.

A new strategy, and an empowered state to carry it through... Better than the previous challengers. Stronger, too.

As the Arbok dashed around the crater, the Duraludon attempted in vain to keep up, steel feet scrapping along the soil underneath it as it turned towards the Arbok, eyes attempting to keep track of it.

But before long, it had disappeared from its peripheral vision. And even as it turned next— no sign of the snake was to be found.

It wasn't until the stadium lights seemed to grow dim that it realized where its missing opponent had gone to.

Its gaze rose slowly even as its arm cocked back, body sluggish to respond to its thoughts as its eyes finally found the Arbok, swiftly falling down towards it like a blazing bullet.

With a stubborn roar, the Duraludon swung forth its claw, barely managing to get it in the way in time—

It was only as the two attacks clashed that Gwyar's eyes suddenly grew wide, only then making a connection he should've earlier.

What happens when steel is superheated, then rapidly cooled, mr. blacksmith?

"Ah. We've been outplayed, Durindana." He laughed— his words drowned out in the booming explosion that came, an azure-tinged plume of smoke rising high in the air as the shockwave spread across the battlefield.

As the smoke cleared, the panting Duraludon was revealed, her body heaving as pieces of brittle steel clattered to the ground beneath. The crater around them had been blown out wider yet, turning what had once looked like a proper beyblade arena into a mess of upturned earth and flattened stone.

Duraludon used Breaking Swipe.

The explosion of the clash had sent her Arbok back, but not nearly enough. She remained in range, staring down the drake covered in steel.[break][break]

"And now, Sumire, for our next play!"[break][break]

The snake reels back, towering over the drake at her max height. Eyes trained on the duraludon, she quickly outpaces the slowed pokemon at the crater's center, circling around, waiting for the opportune moment to strike.[break][break]

Then, and only then...[break][break]

"What happens when ice melts, huh? [break][break]

"What conducts electricity best?"[break][break]

The girl flashes her fangs with a wicked smile. Her snake bares her fangs at the same time, sparks flying from their jagged edges. When the moment was right, when the duraludon struggles to keep up with the snake's agility, that's when she lets loose-- the sound of thunder echoing around the arena as she strikes with lightning flickering off her fangs.[break][break]

Lightning clapped, and thunder surged through the dragon as fangs sunk into broken steel, tearing a roar out of the Duraludon. Her legs buckled mouth wide agape as her body rattled.

The corner of the gym leader's eye twitched. What a horrible sound...

"Water— and silver. Point taken, however." He conceded, tipping his head but giving her a serious look. "Do not mistake this as trumping over typing, however."

The Duraludon's wide open maw came crashing together as its teeth clamped, its arms swinging to try and catch the Arbok as its steel body rattled once again, bits of broken steel falling off to the ground as the pure kinetic energy surged from within her.

"Though it might hurt more— a wet dragon is still a dragon."

Duraludon is on its last legs.
Duraludon is trying to grab Arbok, before using Metal Burst.

Baki grins wide, reveling in the sound of broken, twisted metal. It rings around the arena, struck like a busted tuning fork. Even so, a drake lie deep underneath that steel hide. [break][break]

One that had yet to be taken care of. [break][break]

Iron fangs and claws grasp at the giant snake's black scales, and she lets out an angry hiss as she's held down. Comeuppance for her agile maneuvering, the kinetic energy of her thunder fang ripples through her body. [break][break]

"Sumi!"[break][break]

Baki cries out, her voice tinged with rage. [break][break]

"Let it hold you and it's over! Finish it before it gets a chance!!"[break][break]

The arbok's massive body roils and thrashes violently, crown of a drake remaining atop her head even as the genuine drake pins her down. A knight versus a self-crowned queen. Spitting, hissing, she concentrates all of her remaining power into her tail, and it flares to life with blue flames made of vital energy. [break][break]

Before the drake can overwhelm, she gathers all her energy into one attack. A downward swing with a dragon tail, to send the terrain of the arena upward as jagged edges, earth stabbing into the drake's belly. [break][break]

It wasn't so much a race against the clock as it was rewinding it back, for how little time there was left.

The steel fit to burst with kinetic force, it threatened release the instant the enemy attempted anything.

But— brittle as it had become, it's own tremors were akin to earthquakes against a fragile structure— deadly. Steel continued to fall and crumble, releasing more of the dragon hidden beneath.

The opponent had chosen precisely the move they needed— the dragon tail came swinging against revealed scales— and the steel finally exploded.

Boom

Once again, a large dust cloud rose high in the air, taking on the pluming form of a mushroom whilst the sound of something heavy collapsing boomed.

Duraludon used Metal Burst.
Duraludon has fainted.

Years of training otherwise will not let her forget, how often those in Kanto would continue to fight even after their pokemon had been bested.[break][break]

"Sumire! It's over!"[break][break]

She ushers for the snake to stand down and return to her side. Then she strides confidently across the battlefield, both to claim her badge and look the loser in the eye, gracious for the fight.[break][break]

"Good fight. Was fun. Next time, though, don't take it easy on me."[break][break]

She holds out her hand. A peace offering. All this time, and it still feels strange not to finish the job at this point. [break][break]
