"Please escort our guest up," Ameena instructed her employee. Her office on the top floor was more for appearances than anything. She rarely used it, which would be obvious to anyone attentive enough to see the unused notepad, the pens with their plastic protective nibs still in place, and the way her computer mouse was not even plugged in. The office was just a space filled with props, as her real work (and real office) was in basement level two.[break][break]

But the bookcases along the wall were filled with relevant texts to her studies, either skimmed, annotated thoroughly in various chapters, or were outright written by her. If this Dr. Amsel was serious about dream research, Ameena would be happy to invite her to the basement level. [break][break]

And then she heard the footsteps by the door, her assistant and what must be her guest. "Please, come in."[break][break]

abcon: a new company, brought to hoenn by ameena abadi – a dream researcher from galar. one she had not visited in her time there over the summer, though she’d visited many to study with.[break][break]

she stood before the building, looking up to the face of its top level, before making her way inside. she wore a brunette wig. typically, dr. monday amsel was blonde – but it only made her look more like herself truly: saoirse quinn, a galarian terrorist wanted especially by galar’s government for the trouble she’d caused their military.[break][break]

but her face was the same. her eyes were the same. galar hated her for only serving two years, and perhaps she would look familiar to ameena, or perhaps not. it was worth the risk, she decided – though she was unaware of the woman's veteran status.[break][break]

when let in, lulu thanked the assistant politely, and stepped into the room. she approached and held a hand out warmly to shake.[break][break]

Ms. was an interesting opening gambit. Ameena took it in stride. She had no issue making quick friends or even pretending to do so, as it seemed a good strategy in a foreign land. Something about Monday seemed more calculating than Ameena would've expected from a fellow scholar of dreams, but she let it go in order to stand and greet with Monday with a similar smile.[break][break]

"Monday, it is a pleasure." She had intended to extend a hand over her desk for a quick shake, but she chose otherwise at the last moment, stepping around the desk and extending her arm at a shorter distance for a more familiar handshake. "I do not often find academic interest in the potential of dreams. Too many people are small-minded. Uninterested in the abundance of possibilities."[break][break]

She turned from her guest to the large glass windows, looking out at the people walking among the campus of the company. But Monday did not need any convincing or any praise. "What is it that drew you to my studies?"

her eyes sparkled. here was person who understood; who could see the value in their type of work; what great doors it could open, for better or worse.[break][break]

when ameena rounded the desk, they shook hands. when she turned away, lulu took the opportunity to glance around the office. she noticed the unused pens, and the unplugged mouse, but didn’t mention them.[break][break]

”all of your work interests me,” she replied truthfully. ”but i found your study on dream eater particularly interesting. i’m rather familiar with the move, myself.”[break][break]

as familiar as dracula was with biting necks for sustenance.[break][break]

”i hadn’t realized the therapeutic effects that it could have. how fascinating.”[break][break]

"Ah, the dream eater study was the welcome mat for my future projects. I worked with a team of established researchers for that study who had long strings of beneficial pokemon-on-trainer research under their belt. None of them had interest in dreams in the way I did." Indeed, she had much longer studies in her plans that did not involve some goal as paltry as mentality.[break][break]

"I think we can go further than mental health benefits. I think we are accessing something else when we dream, something powerful, and... well, I just believe we do not have the current technology to harness it." She was getting ahead of herself. The scope of her future projects could intimidate. "Is that what interests you about dreams? The ability to use them to improve our mental state? Or are you looking for more?"[break][break]

Dream studies were surprisingly cross-disciplinary: understanding pokemon phrenology and evolution, energy output - particularly that of psychics, psychology, human biology, and even the anthropology of dreams - the 'third place' as deemed by some previous civilizations, was all necessary for authentic dream study. What drew Monday to it? Where was her approach stemming from?

”it’s like you said. there are few who see the great potential that we do.”[break][break]

when ameena began to speak about technology, lulu’s smile curled once more. of course, she did not know what existed within the laboratories of team rocket’s submarine.[break][break]

”what interests me is the dream world itself,” she explained. ”i believe it may somehow connect us to the rest of the multiverse.” and thus, perhaps parallel universes could be reached through it.[break][break]

”the leaking of the interdream zone is a great peril to the world – more than most seem to realize. paradox pokemon run rampant in increasing numbers, and the tera crystal is equally, if not more invasive. the research of dreams is more important than ever.”[break][break]

she approached the window as well, looking out at the city of mauville. she could recall the rubble of its invasion, years ago.[break][break]

”what if we could travel through dreams, to other worlds and places in time? what answers might we find to resolve some of the problems that threaten our existence?”[break][break]

though she was beginning to suspect the rks system was already accomplishing this, she hoped it would be an effective hook.

Ameena whipped around as Monday mentioned using dreams to travel to other places or times. She couldn't school her expression, either: her shock was clear upon her face, almost as much as the joy it morphed into. "Yes! Exactly!" She pulled a book off the shelf and flipped to a bookmarked page. It was annotated with lots of questions in the margins, but the pages only recounted a tale about a heavenly maiden who took the form of a swan and crafted the stars to evoke dreams in all who gazed upon them. She faced the book outward for Monday to glance at.[break][break]

"So many people, past and present, agree there is power to dreams, but no one has successfully harnessed them in their full potential. I believe the interdream is mist is just a taste of what is out there. I am convinced that dreams are a portal to some alternate reality, and we are actually visiting them when we dream." She placed the book back on the lip of the bookshelf and continued to gesture animatedly as she spoke, excited that someone saw dreams as something more than current researchers did (as remedies and mindfulness opportunities, the fools...)[break][break]

"I really want to analyze the energy output of people when they dream and when they experience dream eating, but it is impossible to justify such a study to a council. They are so hesitant to OK human research, especially when we inflict subjects with pokemon movesets, but this is necessary for our knowledge. For our advancement. There are endless opportunities that are just locked in here." She gestured to her temple, then sighed deeply.[break][break]

It was gratifying to hear someone else emphasize the dream world. She was fixated on the externalization and outsideness of it. It could be explored if they could access it properly. "I am really glad you reached out. It feels less intimidating to approach these studies with someone like-minded, even if the barriers to doing the research are hefty."

her excitement was promising. lulu listened, another smile tingling her cheeks, but it faded into the beginnings of seriousness, as though she were about to try and sell her something.[break][break]

”hm.” she tilted her head. ”i don’t have barriers to worry about, personally. what a nuisance that would be.”[break][break]

was it time, already? usually, she was not so quick to offer the gig. she liked to ensure the hook was in all the way, first – but it felt right early that day.[break][break]

”the people in charge don’t see how this could help them; how crucial it could be for the world. you can’t truly get anywhere by following their rules – especially not at the rate things are happening in this region.”[break][break]

she paused briefly, one last moment of considering her pacing, before committing. her careful gaze remained fixed upon ameena all the while.[break][break]

”allow me to remove your barriers. i have connections and abundant resources. the world needs your mind now. there’s no longer time to ask for permission to do the work that needs to be done.”[break][break]

Ameena watched as Monday confirmed her own world view. People with power instilled oversight that halted project; they just did not understand the potential of these projects. What were a few broken eggs for an omelette?[break][break]

"If you could remove these barriers," Ameena began, cautious, "I would be able to make major progress. I could pursue projects that would not be... accessible to public academia." Monday was suggesting what Ameena thought, wasn't she? The ambiguity felt like a clear invitation. [break][break]

But such opportunities were rarely without cost. "And what would you require for removing these barriers?" She was not opposed to working in another lab, working with other scientists... so long as she had time for her own projects, ones that did not require additional hands until it was out of its deeply theoretical stage.

she smiled, imaging the possibilities that must have been blossoming in ameena’s mind. she could detect caution, but the curiosity in her eyes meant if she wasn’t on the hook yet, she would be soon.[break][break]

her question was met with a brief, quiet gaze, before she went on some more – just to be sure all the alluring details were there.[break][break]

”i should also mention a heavily guarded remote laboratory free from prying eyes, and access to advanced neurotechnology the world has never seen before.”[break][break]

she reached into her pocket and pulled out a card. on it was a red letter r, accompanied by a single phone number, and nothing else.[break][break]

”my real name is lulu flint,” she told her as she handed over the card. if ameena had looked into the mythical at all, she would know that she was, at least at some point in time, she'd been an avatar of darkrai.[break][break]

”all i require is your loyalty, honesty, and commitment to our partnership.” she smiled again. "let's find the dream world together, ameena."

This really did sound too good to be true. As Mon- Lulu put down the Rocket card, things started clicking into place. She had not realized how extensive Rocket was here, but they clearly had resources and minds. If someone like Lulu was with them, they were capable of providing support for research, which would accelerate her projects... If they asked for her in the field or to weaponize her research, those were small prices to pay for progress. [break][break]

Her mind was made even before she grabbed the card. And Lulu's request was so simple... Ameena would be stupid not to accept. This offer was something she could have only ever dreamed up before today. And if she knew anything, it was that she had to gamble on dreams. Everything was riding on them, more than she might even know. [break][break]

"You have it. It will be such a relief to have a partner invested in the dream world." She was eager to get her hands on the neurotechnology in this protected lab Lulu spoke of. Neurobiology was not her specialty, but it was an excellent avenue for exploration. "It is in a transitory stage right now, but the next time you're by, let me show you my basement lab. I will have something interesting for you, I am sure."

she smiled wider again. sold. ”wonderful.”[break][break]

she had been trying to climb the ladder again in the organization, to regain her old rank and funding – but rocket’s trust in her had yet to fully return after her disappearance. perhaps bringing such a big player in both science and business would be yet another sign of her loyalty.[break][break]

her bright eyes were curious, head tilting a little at the intriguing possibility of more secrets shared. what did abcon keep in its basement laboratory?[break][break]

”i’ll be looking forward to it,” she assured genuinely, offering her hand again. this time, it was to seal a deal. to agree, whether she realized it at that moment or not, that ameena abadi and her business now belonged to team rocket.[break][break]

”this is very exciting. i believe our future will be bright together." after a pause, then, she asked, "do you have any questions?”[break][break]

Ameena eagerly accepted the final handshake. "I hope we accomplish what everyone else has not." It was a common toast in the labs she used to run when she first moved to Hoenn and finalized her doctorate. Her fellow tired students had endeared themselves through her with their ambition, though their collective upholding of ethical standards kept them from being invited to her own laboratory. [break][break]

There were many questions to ask, but it all revolved around the finer inner workings of Rocket and expectations of output based on investment. She was sure she would have to produce weaponization potential for her research to keep any bigwigs happy, but Rocket could also surprise her with a fine higher-thinking and emphasis on the importance of learning what was previously unknown - pure science. [break][break]

In any case, the demands of Rocket would not halt her progress. "I will reach out to get details soon," she assured. She fully intended to keep up with her end of their bargain, if not for Rocket's resources then to avoid burning a bridge with such a refined and focused researcher.
