The truck fell in his cacophony of sounds. Steel screeched and groaned and tore as it struck asphalt and stone, a foreboding visage for the blossoming Steel-type Gym Leader of Mossdeep, the aegis that protected the island from the nearby threat of Sootopolis.

When the sun set, the walled off island nation cast a broad shadow on Mossdeep indeed.

As the Gym Leader reached out, Howard's eye widened from beneath his cracked helmet. The single second of honor and duty hung in the air as Howard stared at the hand. It was a hand extended in the face of duty, but it was so much more. It was kindness and loyalty and duty and honor and a living symbol of the fact that there was good in this war-torn world.

Gwyar's city had been razed, but he still reached out his hand. If Howard grabbed it, he could spill. He could leave Rocket behind.

Freedom. He saw Gwyar's shadow dance beneath him. A shadow that reminded him of declan walsh . Howard slackened his reach. This was a trick. He'd never be free from this. He could not allow himself to be captured.

He slipped from Gywar's grasp. As the Gym Leader disappeared beneath violet cloth, the last thing he'd see of Admin Fox was a small platform of Stakataka bricks manifest beneath him.

When the truck struck the street, the admin was gone. Stakataka bricks littered the ground, fainted, before disappearing in a red light as they returned to their owner's Pokeball.

In the middle of the road was a prison transport container, dented beyond recognition. Metal grinded on dented hinges as the battered doors slid open...

Creak...

...as a visceral red liquid flowed out onto the road. An arm hung limply by the transport's mouth.

The starry night's sky felt almost mocking. So much beauty beaming down on such ugly violence.

Police sirens in the distance were fast approaching.

Splayed out over broken pavement, Gwyar stared unblinkingly at it and breathed deeply, alive and well and knowing that many people had died while he hadn't.

Slowly, he turned his gaze, away from the stars and to the burning wreckage that their truck had become.

There was no hope of anyone inside being alive— not when a stream of crimson continued to spill freely off the cracked half-open back doors, a broken arm hanging limply.

He closed his eyes, before rolling back to face the sky.

Destroyed convoy.

Dead officers.

Dead suspects.

Dead people.

And a Missing Culprit.

"It... it has been a while, hasn't it?" He breathed out, throwing an arm over his face, teeth grit. His Aegislash had no answers for him, regarding him silently.

"Bloody hell."

Absolute failure.

Far away, Howard Slayte stood on a building overlooking the carnage. His armor was scraped and torn, and he felt blood trickling between sheets of metal. It made him feel dirty. Unclean. Broken.

"Gwyar..." The admin's voice was a curse. "All you had to do was sit this one out, and everyone would be alive. Why couldn't you be like half the cops in the region, like in Sootopolis?"

Instead, he had honor. Integrity. Strength. When the Gym Leader had clashed with him, it reminded him of Navy. Good men in service for good causes, limited by vision. They had the strength to care, and that made it hard.

"Why did you reach for me?" The Stakataka bricks that brought him here disappeared into their Pokeball. "You should've let me go. It'd be easier."

Easier for me to hate you. That was no issue, though. He had plenty of that to sup upon now. So many were dead, and at Gwyar's hand. Honor was the death of life. It would've been easier for him to simply put down his sword. It would've been easier. Why had he chosen to persist? Pride? A love for his region? Did it matter?

No.

"Next time." With so many of his men dead, would there be a next time? It'd take time to rebuild, and now he wouldn't risk an intel leak for Rocket. BARNABY FINCH would call this a success. He would spin a fine story from this. The admin disappeared into the shadows. "Next time."

Next time, he wouldn't feel like an absolute failure.
