Perhaps a different sort of young woman would be intimidated by a Rocket Underboss's direct request to accompany him on a mission - alone - but Nomi approached THEO BECKETT with a calm, pleasant demeanor, smiling politely at him when she arrived at the Great Chasm. The gaping maw of torn earth was a stain against an otherwise blank slate of icy white, the Silent Icelands no longer as serene as they'd once been, now marred with such a stark wound.[break][break]
"Underboss Beckett," she greeted back. At her shoulder, Kallistatus floated protectively, its shining blue body glinting in the sun, singular eye scrutinizing Theo.[break][break]
Nomi was close with Cillian Quinn, had a complicated relationship with Elisabeth Fiorelli, but she hardly knew the third Rocket Underboss. What did he want from her, exactly? Though she did not fear him, she wondered, with a small pang of curious apprehension, whether he'd somehow caught wind of her current endeavors with the League.[break][break]
She steeled herself, explanation prepared. She was a scientist, and a scientist didn't do anything without a purpose, a hypothesis worth testing.[break][break]
"I've been busy. But haven't we all?" She glanced at the chasm. "What with the endless supply of anomalies plaguing our home."[break][break]

Without a word of warning, she took Theo's hand and they both blinked out of existence. The momentary vertigo of teleportation whisked them down, depositing them on an outcropping of rock amidst a lush jungle expanse. The air was humid, and Nomi immediately felt sweat bead at the back of her neck and along her hairline. As soon as they were stable, she let go of the Underboss.[break][break]
"Here we are."[break][break]
She looked around, then, keen eyes seeking the telltale signs of paradoxes: tera crystals, dream mist, or strange tracks in the dirt.[break][break]
A tension hung about them, though she was uncertain if that had something to do with the ominous nature of the chasm or Theo's somewhat enigmatic silence.[break][break]

It was the sort of question that felt impossible to summarize. How to explain the depth of her bond with the Unown? How could she possibly describe in words that she was now interconnected with all of existence, profoundly changed, having witnessed the moment of creation firsthand? Whenever she entered the Unown Dimension, she felt as if she were being judged by the very essence of divinity itself.[break][break]
"It has been eye-opening," she answered finally. Then she smiled, amused. "Pun intended I guess."[break][break]
They called her the Visionary, after all.[break][break]
Her expression sobered as a flash of movement from just beyond where they were standing - by the mouth of a cave - caught her attention. She motioned for Kallistatus to go and take a look. The shiny Unown-K blinked away, heeding her command.[break][break]
"I know there are those who still don't trust the Unown," she continued, thinking of her own mentor, Lulu Flint - who was finally coming around to accepting that the Unown allied with Nomi were different than those that continued to work for the DRK Triad. Theo and Lulu had once been...together, she knew.[break][break]
"But I can assure you that my Unown are on our side." She paused. "Hoenn's side, to be exact."[break][break]

Be careful, Cillian Quinn had cautioned. He trusted her, and he knew she was right, but he feared Walsh. It was unfortunate, but understandable, given his history. He would do all he could for her, and nothing more.[break][break]
Elisabeth Fiorelli was selfish, and easily distracted by her own resentment, but even if she were confronted, Nomi doubted she would waste her breath on purposefully interfering with the Visionary's mission. She might even reluctantly agree to its merit, given that she had already damned the League to deal with the violent heart of their own MATIAS SILPH.[break][break]
But what of THEO BECKETT? Where would he fall? Would he consider what was truly at stake?[break][break]
"Rocket and League have a common enemy. The DRK Triad wishes to destroy our world and everyone in it. My Unown understand the gravity of such a fate, and have betrayed their former masters in order to gift me Avatarship. They believe I can help save Hoenn. That Rocket can help save Hoenn."[break][break]
A shape began to emerge from the cave, all claws, teeth, and golden horns. Kallistatus drifted forward, ready to meet the monster within.[break][break]

How could she be certain?[break][break]
She opened her mouth to reply, then paused, thinking back to that fateful day in the RKS Machine when Holo had attacked her. Kallistatus had listened to Nomi not because she'd offered it more power, or more influence over humanity; it had been drawn to her because she loved it - loved all of the Unown. It didn't matter to her that Kallistatus had worked for her enemy - she'd recognized that it had likely done so out of a desperate longing for companionship.[break][break]
"The Unown have been lonely for a very long time," she told Theo, voice twinged with sadness. "They are the oldest living creatures, save for Arceus itself."[break][break]
A bulky canine creature emerged from the shadows, jaws snapping. It looked like a twisted version of an Entei, she realized. Another paradox?[break][break]
"They were likely originally drawn to the Triad because of that loneliness. But Holo and her people exploit them - treat them like tools. I offered them an alternative. Love instead of servitude."[break][break]
Kallistatus began to gather energy, then blasted a HIDDEN POWER at the not-Entei.[break][break]

At first, Nomi did not recognize the name. So long ago, it seemed, that she had last spoken with that man. Like the slow, steady settling of ripples across a pond, the reflected face of the former Rocket Underboss etched itself across her memory. A smile that never quite reached his eyes, a detached authority that chained itself to corporate greed, and an inclination towards secrecy and distrust.[break][break]
The paradoxical, warped Entei collapsed to the ground, singed and smoking. Nomi unlatched a Pokeball - one of the odd black ones she'd found recently, as ancient and enigmatic as the creature before her. As she threw it, she turned to regard THEO BECKETT over one shoulder.[break][break]
"No," she answered definitively. "He didn't."[break][break]
