As Rangers, they were expected to know the lay of the land; no matter how big or small, strange or familiar—

However, this was Hoenn, and knowing the way the region behaved?

Everyone would get a massive curve ball in the face!

(This was one of those two massive curve balls.)

So now, everyone was out here—those sent by the League; those sent by Team Rocket, and those who refused to stay away and wanted to get in on the fun themselves.

He then looked over to where his cousin stood, examining the vast, spreading landscape before finally speaking up.

“So. What’re you expecting out of this trip?”

Traveling side by side with Laurence Anderson into this unknown area was surprisingly exciting. It was almost as if she was finally allowed a moment to feel how it felt to be a real proper down-to-earth Ranger.

“Exciting adventure And maybe, loot?” Obviously she was joking. If By now Lars couldn’t read that big smirk on her lips then they truly didn’t spend enough time together. Anyhow, she knew adventure was a given with how Hoenn tended to throw curveballs.

However, loot was questionable, this wasn’t that sort of move after all.

The moment she cracked the ‘loot’ answer, he couldn’t help but smirk her way.

“I knew you were going to say something along the lines of ‘ooh, shinies’,” he teased her; was that how much they knew each other at this point?!

Before he could throw another joke her way…

Huh.

There was—there was another kind of sound that rippled through the space from deeper within where they were supposed to start mapping shit out.

“Unless I’m hearing things, did you hear that?” he asked her in hushed tones, as the same ‘cry’ repeated itself once, twice… three times before fading away.

Before she could even respond Lars suddenly seemed off. And then in hushed tones he asked if she heard something.

Elinor tried to listen. But the sound Lars heard did not come to her ears. Instead it was something else. A metallic screeching, yet somewhat alive sounding cry? It was a weird mess.

“Yeah I hear it.” She replied assuming it was the same sound Lars had heard. She gestured toward the general direction which coincidentally was the same as Lars. “From that direction.”

“And I don’t know what it could be. But let’s go find out?” She suggested.

“Huh,” was the first word out of his mouth.

The noise that she heard was definitely not the same as the one he’d picked up on. While hers sounded like metallic nails scraping on a chalkboard (and then some), his sounded far more… older? Antiquated? If that was even such a thing!

“What the fuck was that…” he trailed off, before quickly summoning his go-to, Ro the Metagross, who hovered in mid-air after emerging from the red beam of light.

“You know what they always say… curiosity killed the Meowth,” he smirked in his cousin’s direction.

“Shall we check out where the source of the noise is coming from?”

All of course, while mapping the region that they were assigned to explore.

Who knew if there was something waiting for them in that direction…

A wide confident smirk emerged well as Lars commented on the dangers of their curiosity before suggesting that they check the origin of the sounds.

“Of course we shall!” She almost eagerly replied, before releasing her own mount.

The mighty impressive looking huge Steelix appeared by her side, lowering itself momentarily for her to climb on top of its head just like a trained Copparajah might.

She jumped on with a movement clearly well trained before the pair began to move in the direction of the sound.

The moment she agreed, he then placed his palm on one side of his Metagross’s legs and off they went—with him in the air and her down on the ground, it wouldn’t be easy to sneak up on them!

(Adding to this was that Ro was part-Psychic so there was that, too.)

“Don’t forget to like, record video of where you’re headed down there!” he called down her way; he already had his own camera on ‘record’; they’d have to upload this later and whoever was in charge of translating the video data into a map would be able to make use of what they’d be bringing back.

Hopefully they didn’t run into any problems…

But knowing Hoenn? Haha.

“Yeah, Yeah!” Elinor replied, even giving a nonchalant hand-wave. Only when she was certain Lars wasn't watching did she take a quick moment to check that her recording equipment was in fact recording.

And so their journey continued in the direction of the sound. Alas for all the moving they did it did not seem to bring them any closer. Elinor figured whatever had been making the sound was moving as well.

“Hey! Are you seeing anything up there?”

It wouldn’t take too long before he—well, to be fair, it was Ro of all things who would catch their attention as he would then look down in the general direction where the silver Metagross was hovering.

“What are… those?” he would say from out of nowhere, catching his cousin’s attention by waving in her direction before pointing downwards to the strange ‘tracks’ that had appeared on the ground.

They were unlike any known Pokémon tracks that he’d encountered, so he would then take out his camera and snap several pictures of them for reference.

“They don’t look familiar to you, right?” he would confirm with her afterward.

“Wonder what made those footprints.”

Had Lars not made the tracks known to her, she would have never noticed them. And with the Size of Steelix they would almost definitely have been destroyed. But luck struck the rangers and she stopped just in time.

Elinor took a good look at the tracks. And then shook her head. “Nope, they do not.”

“Let’s follow the tracks and find out what it is!” Elinor mused enthusiastically.

“Easy for you to say, we’re here to—” he would trail off, his tone suddenly changing as—

“…is your Steelix causing the ground to shake?” he would ask her a few moments later; sometimes this was the advantage of flying on a Metagross… or disadvantage?

Because hovering in mid-air, one wouldn’t really notice or feel the surroundings shift and change as he realized what the signs were…

“There’s an earthquake! And it’s not caused by your Steelix!” he would add as the belated realization would sink in because fact of the matter was that the Steelix was not moving; he’d thankfully managed to capture some video evidence of the tracks before the shaking ground obliterated them.

The words had barely left her mouth before the earth began to quake as if in an active attempt to remove the evidence of the weird creature.

Elinor was quick to steady herself on her mount. Meanwhile Steelix dug parts of its long body into the ground, securing itself against the rumbling.

“Oh really! I wouldn’t have guessed!” Elinor sassed back as Lars pointed out the obvious. Though her tone would surely tell him that she meant nothing ill with it.

“Can you see WHAT is causing this from up there?” She would call out to dear Cousin in the air.

He couldn’t help but snicker her way, before she came in with an actual serious question—

“No, nothing that looks the same as what we found earlier before the earthquake came passing through,” he would reply her way.

However—there was that one incident where… well, you know…

Regirock would appear from out of fucking nowhere and try to squash anyone that it found hostile in their path; but he wasn’t going to disclose that, right?

“Let’s keep looking,” he would add a few moments later.

They hadn’t found anything too suspicious—at least, not yet anyway.

Well, that’s unfortunate. Elinor couldn’t help but think but she kept that to herself. She would probably just get told-off by Cousin-dearest. Admittedly she had not yet heard of the big rocky-robot appearing around here.

It was like… that same sinking feeling of déjà vu would begin bothering him once more because…

Why did he have a feeling that there was something about to appear if they went further? Granted, they hadn’t met the Regirock (not yet at least anyway) however fact of the matter was that his instincts were screaming at him that—

Something, was definitely coming.

“Usually around this point, something appears and—” he would trail off, mentally crossing his fingers and hoping that this wasn’t just a fucking coincidence, however there was… there was a pattern that usually happened leading up to Regirock’s sighting.
