Tapu Koko floats alongside Fern as they wait at the research station they’ve been tasked with overseeing. To their delight, the grunt assigned to their care is punctual. (Not that Fern is usually punctual themself.)[break][break]
They nod with swift tilt of their head at his respectful greeting.[break][break]
Despite their established position and rank, they still find it odd to be deferred to in leadership situations without another superior present. Maybe it’s just the side effect from working from the shadows until they began their rise within Rocket.[break][break]
Before they were ever in Rocket at all.[break][break]
Regardless, they enjoy being out in the open now. And they certainly don’t mind barking orders from time to time.[break][break]
Right now, though, Fern seeks to understand the grunt under their supervision. At least for now. “Fairchild,” they reply lightly, smile appraising, though not unfriendly. “What is it that you typically do within Rocket?”

Fern almost tells the grunt not to worry about the overdressed pigeon that hovers beside them. But they remember that just because the shine of newness has worn off for them, this is not the case for others who aren’t in regular contact with it.[break][break]

And it enjoys his awe, after all. Tapu Koko gives one of its pincers a little warning snip! pointed at Dane. But Fern knows that it is only being mischievous.[break][break]

They sigh, “No specialties, then?” They wonder if he would have a preference of what he did on a regular basis. They’ll file whatever answer he gives away– nice and neat in their back pocket should it be useful later.[break][break]

“Well I think you’ll find it to be a definite change of pace here,” they remark with a laugh. Tasks and strange turns of events were certainly not in short supply.[break][break]

In any corner of Hoenn, really. One need only walk out the front door to find chaos on their stoop.[break][break]

When he jumps, Fern relents and flaps a hand dismissively. “Oh, don’t worry about Tapu Koko. It won’t shock you–” their smile suddenly turns sly and playful, “so long as you don’t offend them.”[break][break]
They suppose the same can be said about themself as well. Cut from the same cloth.[break][break]
But they are not offended, so much as they are bored.[break][break]
Fern sighs loudly, shoulders drooping as their head lolls to the side. “That answer is no fun,” they complain, “what I think best? Surely you have interests?”[break][break]
Blue eyes flit up to DANE FAIRCHILD, “Areas you enjoy working in more than others?”[break][break]
Another sigh follows Dane’s response, though a brow arches as a smile cracks at the corner of their mouth, suddenly as mischievous as their patron.[break][break]

With a cackle, she takes off to do surveillance– sneaking through the shadows, with only the occasional gleam of her gemstone eyes to give her away.[break][break]

Fern ponders the statement as he sets her to task, and then looks back toward Dane. “It’s an unfortunate truth.” They let out a humorless scoff. “But it the sort of business that keeps you employed, no?”

Their head tilts, and as if they summon her, a dragapult phases through the wall to greet them. It is not often that she’s kept in the confines of a ball, so she drifts about. There and then gone, only to reappear again.[break][break]
“She should be,” Fern remarks with a nod at the spectral creature. “She died there, but the mount gave her back. Or the rift there, really.”

Just then, their sableye scuttles back—gleeful titters rumbling from her throat as she tugs the admin’s pantleg and dances from foot to foot.[break][break]
