Thursday, 6:32 p.m., Mossdeep City's Community Stadium.

The floodlights had only just turned on. The doors had been freshly opened to the public.

Spectators, prospects and challengers alike were still filtering into the stadium and unto the bleachers as the gym Leader marched into the battlefield with a clipboard on hand, humming to himself.

His first challenger of the day was...

Sootopolis' very own Young Citizen—

Er.

"Eris Halla." He called out, raising his head to the bleachers with a smile. "Come."

Usually, Gwyar was relatively soft on his younger challengers. Though his gym publicly stated that challenger battles were not formative, but testing, he often went out of his way to try and impart his knowledge all the same.

He had learned from his battle with Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, however, that such was not always required.

And unlike the soon to be new gym leader, Gwyar was somewhat acquainted with Eris Halla and her precocious prowess as a battler.

Still...

His hand fetched a pokeball, before sending out his Probopass.

"You may begin."

It felt odd, battling a child younger than his own kids. Ah well, that was the job.

Mr. Rockhead spun around like a compass before eventually coming around to fully face the opposite side of the field, his dopey eyes blinking at their challengers.

A deep breath in and out. A keen eye sweeping over the crowd that has seemingly shown up. Shoes tiptapping against the ground as she drums her fingers against her knees. A paw reaches over to rest upon her lap, accompanied by a sharp yet all too weary gaze.[break][break]

"Right..." Quiet laughter breaks the walls of tension she'd been building up. "Pa would have said the same thing too."[break][break]

Unlike Reiner, Lyney isn't one to roll his eyes or snort at the things she says. Only provide a gentle look that she has always known to be a mirror of her father's kind smile. Comforting and encouraging as she hears her name get called.[break][break]

"Still remember how it goes?"[break][break]

Step by step, they fall into pace. Lyney seems to give her a smirk, jumping lithely onto the field without another word. And for a moment, amidst the whispers and cheers of the crowd, the air begins to hum, static quietly crackling as an Electric Terrain floods the field.

Mr. Rockhead's gaze locked sharply onto the Jolteon as it stepped up.

As the static electricity spread outwards, covering the entirety of the arena, there was no visible reaction from the sentient rock, its gaze still locked into place until something inside clicked.

Suddenly, the static energy in the air seemed to flow through it, before it began to rise in the air.

For his part, the gym leader, too, was silent, having no observations to give (as of yet).

Seizing the terrain was rarely a bad idea.

A whistle and the Jolteon parts his maws, shadows drawn across his tongue and scraping his teeth. With an almighty bark, he splits the ominous energy and fires several Shadow Balls at the Nosepass.[break][break]

A whistle. Each one speeds and zig-zags from different directions, each determined to land a strike on their foe.

Mr. Rockhead's gaze shifted. It snapped around from one incoming Shadow ball to the next, even as its body stayed stubbornly fixed towards the Jolteon, a compass facing its north.

The Shadow balls came— and the Probopass dropped, smashing into the earth— except not.

The magnetic charge repelled against the air despite the downward's pressure— caving the soil in even as the earth around the giant nose rose out like a wave, erecting a rising wave of dirt around itself, sending it hurtling towards the jolteon and the incoming barrage of shadow balls.

TL;DR:
Mr. Rockhead used Earth Power.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]There's no change to their strategy, only the way that the pieces must now play out. Batted about by sheer static, some of the Shadow Balls don't let up, curving and arcing back towards the Probopass after having missed the first go.[break][break]

"Lyney, Thunderbird!"[break][break]

As the wave of dirt rushes towards the Jolteon, he makes an abrupt break, allowing the projectiles to make first contact. A blast of rock and sand scatters, dust obscuring the vision as the few remaining shadows carry on their duties and shoot out from the growing plume.

Gwyar tilted his head, smile stretching slightly. Thunderbird?

Even precocious genius kids could be cute.

Poised with the choice of dealing with the remaining shadow balls or losing track of a dangerous opponent, Mr. Rockface took decisive action.

It's body suddenly began swiveling wildly in place, eyes wide open as its nose pointed in seemingly random directions, the shadow balls smashing against its solid frame.

Its rock-steel body shook and trembled with each impact, but its swiveling did not cease, nose always pointing at something within the curtain of dust seemingly at random.
