she backs away from him as though he's danger incarnate but that is far from the truth. here, in the hollow space of their shared cell, he is the same as her; equal; as their fates seem interwoven.

"listen to me," his exhale can be heard behind his mask, "i understand how you must be feeling," dread, fear, grudge, "but look around, understand where we stand, and understand what must be done."

"i'll help us."[break][break]the promise makes her want to scoff, but her anxiety and the toxic chain tight around her throat keep derision at bay. she turns her masked face away, scanning their confines from her side of the cell, looking for any means of escape. she never keeps her eyes off THEO BECKETT for more than a few seconds, fearful that his patience with her will find its limits. [break][break]and yet, despite the countless possible scenarios living and dying inside her head, she remains uncooperative. disobedience paid twofold for their previous encounters.

the sound of his voice still unsettles her, but she swallows her discomfort and raises her eyes from the shard in her hands. furtive glances are cast around the ward. their immediate neighbors betray no familiarity, she thinks. not enough for her to recognize them in robes and masks. [break][break]"i'm not sure," she whispers, her polishing efforts slowing down as she stares hard at the figures further away from them. the silvery hair of one prisoner reminds her of freya morningstar , but she can't be certain without hearing them speak. "but i know i don't recognize the people on either side of us." [break][break]she bows her head, returning to polishing as a guard walks by. not needing to spare another glance around the room as that's all he has been doing since waking up, he mutters his response, "a few," before picking up the pace, needing to make up for the way she slows.

"most are rocket."

Zev Harcourt, Elisabeth Fiorelli, priam conrad, BARNABY FINCH, fern delaney, and jayden cross are the easiest for him to recognize. the others require more effort which he cannot afford to give yet.

THEO BECKETT 's observation doesn't throw her into a frenzied panic like it should have. she's numb to it. as unfeeling to it as the scrape of tera crystals in her hands. the sharp intake of breath in her ears doesn't register as coming from her own mouth. she looks down and sees her hands are trembling worse. the shard she's polishing slips clumsily from her fingers and clatters onto ugly ground. [break][break] she bites the inside of her cheek and reaches down for it.[break][break]even if they get to go to the chamber of desires, even if they escape — her safety isn't assured with so many rockets around. anxiety begins to weep through the cracks of her dissociation. she squeezes the shard in her hand, squeaking her thumb across the flat face of it, just to focus on anything else. [break][break]"they're not being avatars," she murmurs eventually, keeping the conversation obtuse. "because of our gift, i'm guessing."[break][break]she reaches for a new shard, staring down at its clouded surface. annalise ruminates on THEO BECKETT 's answer, scrubbing the shard in her hand until she sees her warped reflection upon its surface. her head remains bowed, strands of hair curling over the perimeter of her mask as she works. the never-rot is their leader (presumably, as he says) and their ward — the ugly ward — is (again, presumably) the bottommost. [break][break]her answer takes the shape of a small, acknowledging inclination of her head. [break][break]"we need to win."[break][break]she discards the previous topic like slag from a mineral vein. the less cohesive their conversation is, the more they can cover. beneath her mask, she takes clandestine glances at those around them, measuring how many tera shards remain, lingering on bodies and concealed faces for any familiarity she can act upon.
