"Lookit that, Marnie! Ya fit!" he teased as he plopped the little oddish down in one of the divots in the incubator. Marnie cooed, her amusement showing in the way the fronds at the top of her head rustled and curled like new ferns.[break][break]

Benji scooped the little oddish up again, and let her hunker down on a broad shoulder instead. "Though I wager, some'a these eggs are gonna be bigger than you." He poked at one of her little footies as he finished up flicking the switches that would bring the incubator to life with a soft glow. "Think we'll only need a couple rows..."[break][break]

Down the line they went, prepping the holding nests to make sure they were adequately warmed for the eggs that would soon inhabit them. Occasionally, he'd scribble a note on a clipboard, flipping to a new chart for each machine.[break][break]

While he was always happy to collaborate with the local rangers, it was sort of a shame they had to displace so many wild eggs, wasn't it? He'd seen firsthand some of the wild things that had been happening lately - much as he tried to keep himself out of trouble.[break][break]

The recent toxicity that had seeped into the natural environment, though, unfortunately could not be ignored. And eggs like the lot he was due to receive any minute now were helpless victims from those toxins.

"I think this is the place," Caleb noted, holding up a hand to halt Honey's progress. The Appletun snorted, shaking her head, but did as her trainer wished. He'd been surprised by how compliant she was, given the fiercely independent streak most dragons seemed to have. They are essentially livestock, freya morningstar's book had explained. For apple farms. He supposed if their farms were ever under attack, they'd get pretty ferocious pretty fast.[break][break]
"Here," he held out a ruby-red sweet apple for the dragon. Her thick, pink tongue lapped it up in seconds, dribbles of juice running down her chin. "Edrok fanol," he told her, pleased to get it right on the first try - for she nudged his now-empty hand with her nose, clearly preening.[break][break]
"Hello?" He called out, then, to the man who supposedly lived here. He'd come around the back, having been told about the sizeable hatchery present on the grounds. That's likely where he'll be, the missive had read. We've arranged the drop-off ahead of time.[break][break]
In the past, Caleb might have found such a mission boring. But the Rangers had been inundated with dire evacuations, climate disasters, and dangerous Pokemon attacks as of late. Delivering a bunch of eggs to a doctor was a much-needed respite.[break][break]
"Cozy spot," Caleb commented. Honey sniffed the air, nostrils flaring. A crate was strapped to her back, housing the two dozen Pokemon eggs the Rangers had recently rescued from the disaster at Mt. Chimney.

One of the incubators seemed to have an issue, and he’d stooped down to fiddle with the electrical box at its base. Frowning, he failed to get it to turn on properly. “I think the heating coils are burnt out,” he muttered out loud to Marnie, only to notice that the oddish was no longer tottering around beside him.[break][break]
Hello?[break][break]
Ah, so that’s where she’d gone to. A sociable little plant, Marnie must’ve noticed the arrival of the ranger he’d been informed of. Ben poked his head around the side of the machine, smile on his face. “Hello there!”[break][break]
Casting a glance at the incubator, he looked down the row warily. Hopefully they should still have plenty of space with this one taken out of the mix. Though he couldn’t quite recall just how many eggs were being brought along today.[break][break]
Surely they could figure it out if it came to that, though![break][break]
He popped back up to his feet, dusting his hands on his pants as he crossed the distance in a few easy strides. “You with the Slateport crew?” he asked amicably, hand extending. “Benji! Or Ben, whichever. I run the facility here.” And then his eyes drifted down to the appletun that had accompanied him. In an instant, his face lit with delight.[break][break]
“And who’s this?” he gushed, momentarily forgetting the transactional nature of their meeting.

benji sawyer had a kindly smile and a jovial spring to his step, the sort of warm-looking fellow that almost certainly had excellent bedside manner. There was something undeniably genuine about his friendly greeting, eyes soft like freshly laundered linens, and any apprehension Caleb might have been feeling about this particular social interaction evaporated as the good doctor's expression turned even more gooey at the sight of Honey.[break][break]
"Caleb Harcourt," he introduced himself, suppressing a chuckle as the dragon turned eagerly towards her newest fan. Shameless, she was. "And yeah, I'm with the Slateport Rangers." He paused, amused by the doctor's fawning. "And this is Honey, my Appletun."[break][break]
As Honey sniffed Benji (apparently deciding instantly that he was worth a kiss in the form of a big sloppy lick), Caleb stretched to begin hauling the crates off her back. Unlatching the restraints, he grunted as he set the first of them on the ground by Benji's feet.[break][break]
"I've got about two dozen recovered eggs here, give or take, and my superiors said you'd know what to do with them. So what's next, doc? I'm at your service for today."[break][break]

Marnie clambered up onto his shoulder, the fronds atop the top of the oddish’s head tickling at the side of his face. She cooed happily up at the ranger. “Caleb! Glad to meet you, and grateful you came all this way with all these poor lil guys.” Lil guys being the unhatched eggs that had been displaced.[break][break]
A gleeful sound followed the appletun’s interest in the attention he gave. “Well, Honey is adorable.” More laughter spilled free in the wake of a sloppy dragon smooch. The slobbery sensation bothered him little. He never minded the friendliness of pokemon, and he continued to scratch under her chin as Caleb moved to remove the crates she’d been carting on her back.[break][break]
A heavy scent of apples and cinnamon wafted through the air with the jostling movements, no doubt because the containers had been covering the pie shell on her back. “I love appletuns, they’re so dopey and sweet.” No matter how much he loved baked treats, it was crazy to him that some people in other regions considered these cuties a culinary delicacy.[break][break]
“Two dozen?” Ben whistled and rose from where he’d stooped, rubbing the back of his head as he squinted down at the row of incubators. “There should be enough here to warm them.” He grinned after a beat and turned back toward Caleb, “Just gotta get them settled and let the heaters do their work! Oh– any idea what sorts of eggs they are?”

benji sawyer approached Honey with the mooney-eyed gushing of a parent to a baby, which was both endearing and a little bit embarrassing for Caleb to witness. Honey seemed thrilled, however, mouth hanging open in a delighted smile as Benji scratched under her chin. Caleb rolled his eyes, leaning casually against one of the crates.[break][break]
"She's got maybe one single brain-cell, but she's a hard worker," Caleb commented teasingly, with obvious fondness for the Appletun. "And as you can see, a total softie."[break][break]
He'd never brought Honey into battle, and likely wouldn't - she just didn't have the right demeanor for it, and he had plenty of other capable fighters.[break][break]
The doctor began assessing the situation with the eggs, and Caleb listened carefully to his rather simple instructions. Eggs go in the incubators. That made sense. Carefully, the Ranger opened one of the crates and gently reached inside, pulling out a bright yellow egg that reminded him of a highlighter.[break][break]
"No idea, but this one looks like it could be an electric type?" He grinned sheepishly, holding up the egg. "How long does it take for eggs like this to hatch, anyway? Are they all different?"

benji didn't really mind if he was perceived as mushy, or overly doting. when it came to particularly cute pokemon, he often couldn't help but fall all over them with attention and adoration. honey was no exception. he continued to scratch under her chin and...eye? flaps? even as his focus moved back to the ranger.[break][break]
who was also cute, fyi.[break][break]
"i can definitely see," he cooed at the appletun. he was reluctant to return to the task at hand, admittedly.[break][break]
she was a sweet creature, and ben found himself a bit envious to not have one of his own. perhaps he'd go hunting for one - though his trainer days were long behind him by that point. wistfully, he recalled days plunging through the underbrush and forcing a younger elijah gardner to put up their tents together for joint camping excursions. how nostalgic.[break][break]
but he was getting sidetracked again![break][break]
ben peered at the presented egg curiously, then carefully held out both hands in offering to take it and gently cradle the shell. "it very well could be!" it would've certainly made sense - unless it matched the pokemon's actual coloring, rather than type.[break][break]
he hummed in thought, scanning the rows of beds for where it might belong best. "it depends. some egg groups are alike and generally take the same amount of time to incubate. others might take longer, though, if they're a more uncommon species."

Honey would remember this as a day of legendary pampering, and Caleb would be hard-pressed to reproduce it for her in the days to follow - which, he would come to realize, did give him an excuse to visit benji sawyer again, which, all things considered, was a pretty good deal.[break][break]
After all, the Pokemon doctor was handsome.[break][break]
"Huh," Caleb commented, listening attentively to Benji's explanation. "So, the rarity of a Pokemon can determine its incubation time?"[break][break]
He would have guessed it had something to do with size, but then again, legendary and mythical Pokemon had all sorts of bizarre and unexpected abilities. Maybe it took an extra long time for those things to develop?[break][break]
Wait, but some legendaries were one of a kind, weren't they? Where had they come from, then? If not...an egg?[break][break]
Caught off guard by the sudden existential nature of that thought, Caleb shook his head in an attempt to clear it.[break][break]
"It would be useful to be able to identify which Pokemon will hatch from which eggs," he mused. Then he laughed, cocking his head at Benji. "Wait, aren't you supposed to know that sort of thing? Being a Pokemon doctor and all."
