the nature of grunt work requires him to always be available, so acclimating has proven difficult with how erratic his schedule has been. he could be needed in rustboro one day only to be moved to sootopolis the next. hoenn's transportation infrastructure is impressive, to say the least.[break][break]

but, finally, he finds time to look at apartments with his cousin. their third viewing so far is a small but cozy corner room on the sixth floor of mauville hills.[break][break]

"it's nice."[break][break]

despite DANE FAIRCHILD 's reservations about this place, annalise likes it. a corner apartment means more windows, more light, and a sizeable-yet-kinda-awkwardly-placed balcony overlooking the city center.[break][break]"yeah, it is," she says distractedly, scrutinizing the small details like her parents taught her to when she was looking for somewhere to live. at the mention of the decor, she looks around as though she's seeing it for the first time. suits him? he may be a single and relatively eligible bachelor but he doesn't want to be exuding that aura. he thinks he doesn't, but if a place like this suits him then maybe he does.[break][break]

DANE FAIRCHILD's confession doesn't strike annalise as unusual. maybe staying at home is par the course in johto, but most people she knows don't come home every night. two of her roommates are gone in stretches of time. even she is kept away from home when work demands it. his follow-up piques her interest. [break][break]"sounds like a spooky job, though, watching all those graves."[break][break]she hugs her arms at the thought, imagining a chill in the middle of this apartment. they don't talk about it much as he doesn't share unless asked, but the fairchilds were responsible for tending to the cemeteries in mahogany as well as the one at the lake of rage up north. for that reason, dane has always been comfortable around death.[break][break]

he slumps down into a chair, swiveling to look at her until the back hits the desk to rattle the fake computer on it.[break][break]

while no ranger, dane is a decent enough trainer, able to hold his own even against sturdy league officers back in johto. he doesn't expect anna to know this, obviously, so he doesn't fault her for being worried.[break][break]

the mood may have taken a slight dip but there is still fun to be had. it will rise again after this needed conversation.[break][break]

dane is the furthest thing to a hero. his looks and demeanor aside, his actions in the past have directly gone against what it means to be good, having participated in the failed invasion of johto along with countless other missions on behalf of team rocket.[break][break]

but he would not consider himself a villain either. that'd be too simplistic. too black and white.[break][break]

"think it feels only right i take it now."[break][break]

he glances around the room, imagining himself living here. not much would change.[break][break]

"plus, it's not too far from where you live, isn't it? it'd be nice to get to hang out more."[break][break]
