Petalburg wasn’t the normal gathering point for Voltorb. Its grassy knolls and old stone buildings attracted some of the more natural types of Pokemon-- birds, and bugs, and the like.

Not veritable hordes of rolling Voltorb, flashes of red like landmines in a thick blanket of fog. As he watched, one of Petalburg’s main streets entirely vanished, leaving him and the assorted group of daily travelers appearing to be floating on a mist-shrouded plain.

Bash wasn’t really the type to try and help or protect others, but he felt it prudent to point out the common sense of the matter.

“We should try a different way,” he said, begrudgingly looping them all in together in an attempt to divert them away from the street filled with rolling bombs.

Half of them didn’t seem to notice he’d spoken, heads bowed to their phones, and the other half snorted or made derisive noises. All of them charged ahead.

Bash pressed his fingers into his eyes. “Just walk away, Bastion. Just walk away.”

Then the explosions started. The fog began to billow and burst, like bilious bubbles on a rotting corpse. The smell of burnt stone and charcoal and ozone and electrical charges.

And the screaming. Human and Pokemon.

“Oh, god damn it.” Fragarach was in his hands as he carefully stepped into the clearing mist, coming to the first bloodied body and the blown-out crater next to it.

He let his Doublade go, who set up a small perimeter to gently knock away any rolling Voltorb, and pressed his hands into the bleeding wound on the man’s leg. Someone nearby was still coherent and babbling for help into a cellphone on speaker.

Bash just hoped they made it in time.

All hell had broken loose, apparently.[break][break]
It was a good thing he hadn’t managed to step out for the day–originally intent on making a few rounds out further toward Petalburg Woods to see some of the more immobile patients of the center.[break][break]
Panic arose in the Pokemon Center as the calls began to filter in at a rapid pace. Obviously, the general hospital was flooded with calls and more began to be routed to their building. All hands on deck.[break][break]
A strange circumstance to be sure– Benji couldn’t ever recall a time when Petalburg was inundated with voltorb. They certainly weren’t common, that was for sure. It made no great difference, of course. They were here now, and they had detonated in quick succession…causing damage by the bushel.[break][break]
He was out the door with the rest, booking it toward the center of town. In the distance, sirens blared as ambulances and squad cars approached the area, the flashing lights not yet close enough to cut through the dense haze the electric pokemons’ detonations had caused.[break][break]
Closer to the chaos, and so ahead of other, probably more efficient help.[break][break]
Squinting against the acrid sting of smoke, Ben pulled a mask up over his nose as he jumped into the fray with little hesitation. Behind him, a dainty comfey twirled through the air as she followed–a small floette clinging to the curve of her wreath.[break][break]
Through the heavy fog, he followed the sound of screaming. And then he felt something bump his ankle. Glancing down with a frown, his expression morphed into panic as flashing, circular red registered in his mind. Benji tried to dive away, twisting to barrel into his smaller Pokémon to shield them from the blast.[break][break]
Clumsy. Always so clumsy.[break][break]
Ringing static filled his ears in the aftermath, and his head spun as he managed to sit up, vision blurry in his disorientation.[break][break]
That would be how the unknown face of one bastion blythe would come to find him, pant leg soaked with blood from a deep gash that Ben didn’t really dare look at despite the familiarity in working with all sorts of injuries and ailments.[break][break]
He winced as the stranger dropped to apply pressure on his leg, and the doctor was quick to shake his head. “Thanks, but—don’t worry about me,” he said, feebly attempting to wave the man away. He needed to be authoritative, but there was no way he sounded convincing.[break][break]
His comfey unfurled herself from his arms, the shake of FLORAL HEALING doing some work on the injury.[break][break]
“Just get me to someone else who needs the help.” It was what he was there for, after all.
