Some part of him wondered if HBIC was truly serious about its objective. If it was, why did they continually insist on this farce? Someone in HR disliked how many vacation days he had on the books. So, they insisted he make use of them. It seemed that donating them to your most annoying coworker was heavily frowned upon.

So, he’d picked a few days at random to get the pencil-pushing fools off his back. Unfortunately, this break coincided with a lull at his consultancy. His upcoming jobs were many, but work did not start until next week. And, with all of the war tension, his more clandestine activities were temporarily suspended. A few files were shuffled around, but none of them were interesting.

So, he turned to testing a hypothesis.

It ended with needle marks on his arm. He waited a few moments and murmured a few words into his microphone. Satisfied the effects would be minimal, he stood and pulled on his jacket. “Barbara.” A psychic pinprick at the back of his mind told him the Alakazam was listening. “Watch Samuel.” Then, Nikita vanished into the night. A cool breeze informed him that—as always—he was never truly alone. His Houndstone trotted a few feet behind.

A kerchief rose to wipe his brow as he finished his second drink. His vision blurred briefly. As his eyes lifted to the bartender, he jumped. “!?” Instead of the blonde bartender, he saw a brunette—Robin. Obviously, it was a hallucination. But it made him stand and stagger back from the bar. With his jacket half-on, Nikita staggered out the front door and into the night.

Somewhere between there and home, he collapsed against the wall. His heart pounded as he slid down between two upended trashcans. With a scolding huff, Winters sat down beside him. His phone moves into his shaking hands. “Alcohol appears to increase the potency of Nihelego toxin.” His words trailed off as he let his head fall back against the brick wall.

Gods, he looked like a wino.

the houndstone was a dead giveaway.[break][break]

haoyu wasn't much for canines, but he knew this one. the rugged detective was worrying over the man bent in the alley, and before he approached, he already knew what he'd see.[break][break]

"rough night?" he approached with a pleasant expression, though he felt a lot of concern. nikita appeared to be in poor shape, but he didn't smell like he'd bathed in alcohol. he didn't believe nikita to suddenly be a lightweight, either. "did you keep an eye on your drink?" could he be drugged? could someone have slipped something into his drink? haoyu had half a mind to charge into whatever bar nikita came from and interrogate everyone around. [break]

Nikita’s eyes lifted tiredly to face the other man. Even in his current state, there was a look of immediate recognition—one marked by an audible sigh. “I would say it is lovely to see you, but we both know how I feel about liars.” They were typically nothing but empty-hearted scoundrels. And, in this scenario, he certainly was not happy to find a familiar face. It was exasperating.

“Tch.” With an irritable motion, he dips his sweat-stained head back. Those piercing eyes meet those of his visitor. He forces himself to swallow. His fingers grasp idly at the suddenly heated air. “That is one way to describe it.” The dark, spotty light of the alley helps disguise the angry purple of his veins.

The angry glow of the Houndstone’s eyes dims as he recognizes a friend. His jaw clacks together in greeting. This is followed by an acknowledging nod. Notably, the ghost refrains from leaving his partner’s side. A bony paw lays across his master’s leg to hopefully tether his mind to the here and now.

Nikita’s former consultant’s face shifts like a Munch painting. First, it is the visage of his father. Then, the faces of both his eldest boy and his former son-in-law. At the talk of Rohypnol, Nikita allows himself a solitary laugh. He was far from the target market of such a thing. As is common as of late, the sound is hollow and almost tortured. “I am afraid this is self-inflicted.”

With a grunt, he tries to push himself to his feet.

the man could be abrasive to some, but haoyu appreciated his honesty and sharp edges.[break][break]

of course, that didn't mean he always trusted the other man's judgement. "self-inflicted?" he frowned. his disapproval was clear. "and why are we doing such a thing?"[break][break]

he tried not to be judgmental, but there were a lot of artificial and manufactured substances that were hell on the body. his brief stint in medicine and longer experimentation with homeopathy and environmental cures left him preferring purely natural substances if one were to indulge. alcohol was one demon, but it was clear to him that that wasn't all nikita was experiencing. "what is in your system?" [break]

Typically, Nikitta disliked being questioned. His intellect made him feel that he was always correct, a fact that only his wife had managed to dissuade him from. But anything she’d done to smooth out those edges had ended with her death. But Haoyu is a friend, and there is less pride to rankle here. The man had seen him when the wreckage of his home—and the corpses of his family—still smoldered. The mask was not as whole, so he did not feel as driven to protect it.

Rolling up his sleeves, Nikita shows off the most recent mark. Notably, it is far from the only one.

“I was testing Nihilego toxin.” Understanding poisons has proved quite useful in the past. Especially when it came to his more clandestine activities. One did not hunt down an elephant—or Rocket Beast—with a club, after all. But he also needed to understand the weapon in his hand. And, like a snake handler, be unable to fall victim to it. “I did not anticipate its interaction with alcohol." Nor how long it stayed in the system.

Some part of him is relieved it is a friend who found him. Another is almost—he would not say embarrassed—but detestful. Though he wavers, he manages to stand against the wall. “It is more irritating than anything.” The physical symptoms were an encumbrance certainly. His legs felt like gelatin dessert (a truly disgusting concoction) and his heart pounded.

“You look like my ex-wife.” Notably, he does not say dead. Trying to shake off that illusion, he closes his eyes for a moment. “It’s quite the sight, let me assure you.”

natural poisons like from the nihilego was preferable to something manmade, but the ultra beasts were freaks of nature rather than natural components of it. unfortunately, nikita did not have a reputation for talking out his self-destructive plans with his friends and accepting lots of criticism.[break][break]

"things could have been worse," haoyu comforted. "but they'd be better if you hadn't take any. these marks... you should have been injecting under a doctor's presence, if nothing else." worry filled him, but he tried not to be so chastising.[break][break]

his eyes soften as his friend says he looks like his wife - haoyu definitely doesn't want to be cruel. "let's get you home and see when these delusions clear, hm?" ideally, the houndstone can lead the way and nikita can accept haoyu's assistance, and haoyu... well, there's research about nihilego to do. [break]

The fact that Nikita had not yet stormed off was a testament to their bond. That and his current inability to properly distinguish up from down. “That is true of every situation.” The detective is quick to snap back. Even on that night, there was the small solace of his grandson’s survival. However, as time passes, some part of him believes that more burden than a benefit. “I learned what I needed to.” The talk of those marks slides crimson eyes irritably to the brick wall beside Robin-Haoyu. Only two of those were from this particular experiment. “It was worth it.”

At the talk of doctors, the detective’s brow rose. “I would not trust a doctor who’d allow it.” Besides, the amount of red tape involved would turn his tests into a migraine. There was a reason he abhorred governmental work. That and other people. Still, after a moment of reluctance, he accepts the presence of the arson investigator. Nikita inclines his head once as he pushes himself fully off the wall. He shakes his head to clear a strange tingling behind his eyes.

For a moment, he considers insisting that he is fine. Ushering the man to continue his night uninterrupted, but he knows it would be useless. “Let’s get this over with.” As he passes, the ghost dog gently bumps his snout against Haoyu’s knees. It is a sign of affection, if not a bit heavy. “Take us home, Winters.” The dog’s shadow turned to something Lovecraftian as tendrils bloomed. A hellish purple glow erupted as his claws tore a portal through the empty air.

Half leaning on the green-haired man, the detective made his way toward the portal. Through it, a two-story house is visible. “I would invite you for a drink, but—” His shoulders lifted in a shrug.

well, nikita had a point about not trusting a doctor who would do something so dangerous. haoyu himself didn't know if he could stomach watching it. sadism wasn't a tool in his toolbox.[break][break]

"indeed," he agreed as the private investigator insisted on getting it over with. haoyu felt warmly about the other man's trusty canine companion, who was affectionate enough and quite capable to boot. [break][break]

haoyu stepped through the portal, determined to make sure nikita truly made it home safely. "do you need something to help settle you? i could make toast while you get ready to rest?" and he did desperately need nikita to rest. those toxins... his body was fighting it hard, and it needed to enter the stasis of sleep to really get to work. [break]

After confirming everyone arrived in one piece, the ghoulish hound closed the portal. In seconds, the tear between this world and the next had been erased. A bony jaw shifted as Winters turned to meet his partner’s gaze. “Stone.” There was still something off in his crimson eyes—a hint of madness that refused to fade.

As his feet touched the concrete path, Nikita could not resist a grunt of discomfort. While typically unaffected by teleportation, the added toxins made his head spin. The hand slung across Haoyu’s shoulder curled into a fist as he forced his eyes closed. With the toxins at play, his house shifts into something horrifying. Its top windows are the angry eyes of a revenant. As his toes bumped into his porch steps, the detective forces a foot to raise. It is just a foot off the ground, Sokolov.

Concerned, Detective Winters follows at his heel. His muzzle hovers just an inch or two behind his knees, ready to support his trainer if he trips.[break][break]

At the talk of toast, Nikita laughs. The sound is mirthless. “You have done more than enough.” A shaking hand reaches out to open the front door. There is a fingerprint lock as well as a numeric one. The beeps of punched numbers are slow and stilted. In front of his eyes, the numbers shift like irritated Arbok.

With a BEEP the door swings open. Inside is a surprisingly sterile home—it is cold and dark. “Just get me on the couch.”

nikita's movements are worrying, but at least the man is moving.[break][break]

haoyu gives the man enough space to enter his home, then returns to assisting, supporting the detective over to his couch. "okay, no toast," he concedes. "but call in the morning if you want a hangover cure breakfast."[break][break]

he wasn't sure what the recovery would be for the intravenous nihilego poison. it might be more like recovering from a general cold or affliction. "i make a mean omelet." [break]

Only after seeing his trainer deposited on the couch did Winters relax. A burst of spectral power slammed the exterior door in place. The deadbolt turned in its place.

Nikita could not deny his embarrassment. The last time he needed someone’s aid to walk was the night his family died. Though he supposed that was not accurate. The firepeople were merely restraining him from digging barehanded through the rubble. At some point, he had burned his lips trying to give CPR to a pile of ash that had been his wife.

The laughter hurt. It made the world around him swirl. The movement further unbalanced his equilibrium. “You make it sound like I am a freshman on a bender.” Which he was not.
[break][break]

“Is that so?” Nikita murmured. He had never been a breakfast man. If he ate anything at all, it was wrapped in plastic and stuck by the door. “Perhaps you should teach it some manners.” [break][break]

As he pulled his hand away from his face, he was surprised to find it wet. And sweat was only part of it. Stupid emotions. The idea of letting Haoyu leave so soon was suddenly distasteful. Some sick part of him wanting to hold on to the man who kept twisting into Robin. Just to see that face for a little longer. Without the soot and smell of flesh. "Has Hoenn been treating you well?"

haoyu was surprised as nikita pulled him back in for conversation. perhaps the poison had hurt him more than haoyu first assessed. perhaps nikita just needed to catch a break.[break][break]

"it's been good," he said warmly. "i enjoy the fire forensic work in lilycove. i think there's a lot to learn about the anomalies here, too. i have been visited the ultra space crater area to learn about its environment. the dust there is unusual." so were the pokemon. he had captured a celesteela for further study.[break][break]

"are you going to take care of yourself?" haoyu didn't want to put the man on the defensive. "i can stay the night. it is no inconvenience."[break]
