the first day, nina had not particularly worried about most of her missing colleagues. wherever they were, they were surely handling themselves and would be back soon enough.[break][break]

the second day, however, a voice began to whisper in the back of her mind that they would not return. THEO BECKETT , Elisabeth Fiorelli , and even the less familiar Cillian Quinn , along with most of the upper brass: all missing. where would rocket be without them?[break][break]

and where would it leave her, if they fell to the league’s coming siege because their avatars and beasts and sense of order were gone? right back where she'd been before, most likely.[break][break]

it was that thought got her moving, taking off from other work she’d been assigned in dewford to touch base with the growing search party.[break][break]

where could they be?[break][break]

anxiously, she waited for a partner that had been sent to meet her at the edge of the island of sea mauville's decommissioned research facility. an arbok remained close by, shiny skin glistening as it basked under the tropical sun.[break][break]

in all honesty, dane could not care less about the missing upper brass as he knows they'd simply be replaced. kanto would send whoever they deemed capable, and the wheels would continue to turn as though they'd never stopped in the first place.[break][break]

but, for obvious reasons, his thoughts are kept to himself.[break][break]

much to his distaste, he arrives on the back of his altaria, cotton ball, only to immediately recall the flying-type the moment they land.[break][break]

"hey, sorry i'm late." he'd been trying to find another means of transportation but the idea of booking a corviknight taxi on behalf of team rocket felt wrong. "i'm dane."[break][break][break][break]

and they’d only sent two of them. as much as she’d trained, and as much as she enjoyed exploring, she didn’t have much faith in her ability to tackle whatever it was that might’ve been keeping the real muscle down – unless they were just lost somewhere.[break][break]

surely that was not the case.[break][break]

”nina.” she gave a short smile, but it didn’t quite reach her rosy, anxious eyes. ”do you think we should go inside, or look around out here first?”[break][break]

she wasn’t sure who was in charge between the two of them, or if it even mattered. maybe dane was better at detective work.[break][break][break]

technically, she outranks him, but the hierarchy has proven flexible in his experience, and only really needed to be maintained when in the presence of the upper brass. there are exceptions, of course, but from what he can tell, nina doesn't seem like the type to care.[break][break]

"maybe start outside, then work our way in?"[break][break]

he doesn't need to check his phone to know sundown approaches. they have a little under an hour remaining.[break][break]

"would be tougher to spot people in the dark later."[break][break]

he's about to tell her that it's a bad idea to split up, at least in his opinion given the circumstances, but she finishes her thought with what he wants to say.[break][break]

despite his attempted cool demeanor, he can't help but feel anxious as well as they start making their way through the weeds. he calls out his wugtrio, though finds little comfort in its presence.[break][break]

”leadership retreat?” he was joking. had to be. ”no way they would have just left us all wondering. we’re losing money looking for them.”[break][break]

still, even if she knew it was silly, she hoped dane was right, or if not, that it was still something harmless and that they’d be back unscathed sooner than later.[break][break]

her searching paused to glance at the wugtrio that emerged. very cute. she smiled at it, and then at dane — it was not what she’d been expecting — before her attention returned to gold-edged grasses.[break][break]

wugtrio generally were, from what she’d read and seen across hoenn’s beaches recently.[break][break]

as they continued to explore, the sun soon began to set, cooling off gold-burned edges of the overgrown foliage. before they could make it back to the entrance of the plant, they would hear the sounds of diglett making their way home for the evening.[break][break]

a line of them crossed in their path, and one stopped to look over at the wugtrio, similarly charmed by it.[break][break]

not really. his wugtrio's temperament is different than usual, perhaps a byproduct of spending so much time with its trainer who, despite his looks, is far from vicious.[break][break]

stopped by the line of diglett and one in particular, wugtrio bobs up and down, showing off its whimsical mating ritual. all three heads then gesture, inviting the diglet to enter one of the holes in its rock (coral).[break][break]

the diglett approached, intrigued until it turned away at last second. perhaps the dance was not right, or the coral was unsatisfactory. it darted off, hurrying to catch up with its kin in the brush without a glance back.[break][break]

”aw. better luck next time,” nina assured the rejected wugtrio, before looking at its trainer and suggesting, ”let’s check inside.”[break][break]

or maybe it was an order. it was getting late, and though she rather liked poking around creepy places, it was a little too real when several powerful people had already gone missing.[break][break]

too focused on observing their surroundings, dane doesn't see the cute interaction between his wugtrio and the wild diglett, at least not all of it.[break][break]

by the time he turns, he's met with an order, though it doesn't quite come off as one. he nods regardless.[break][break]

the display was over before she had a chance to point to what was happening, so in the end, she let it go without explanation.[break][break]

”… never mind.”[break][break]

she moved towards the entrance of the abandoned plant, giving a door a couple of kicks and sending in her arbok first.[break][break]

on the interior, they’d find corrosion and decay, drifting spirits, and a decent training session – but none of rocket’s higher-ups, or any of the others that seemed to be missing along with them.[break][break]

they’d ultimately leave empty-handed. when they emerged under stars, she decided she’d be staying in slateport. maybe she’d make a visit to Zev Harcourt 's howling at the moon, to sooth her nerves, and ask about the missing beast.[break][break]
