“You flatter me,” they croon back, though the cheerfulness in their tone doesn’t quite reach their eyes.[break][break]
This is a trip that had been waylaid by their unfortunate imprisonment. Long planned, but they can’t say that they know for sure what THEO BECKETT’s motives are for being keen to accompany them in their never ending hunt for signs. Their guard remains up around him, though. As it has remained up for nearly everyone in the time that has lapsed.[break][break]
Their eyes follow him as he watches Tapu Koko. The island spirit, to its credit, only regards the underboss with an equally scrutinizing eye.[break][break]
“Well enough,” Fern replies simply. Their shoulders rise and fall in a shrug. “As well as anyone trapped in an alien prison for who knows how long can be.”[break][break]
Something sharpens in their smile as they turn to face the decrepit city proper. “It’s ridiculous how such extremes have become mundane.” But that’s not the purpose of their trip today, so they let their complaints taper off.

of course, they are not as okay as they pretend to be. their jokes and light remarks are only a means to keep others at bay - piss poor coping mechanism as it is.[break][break]
but theo doesn't seem to push and so they offer little else.[break][break]
tapu koko ruffles up as theo acknowledges it. "true, but hopefully we'll find some answers about it today." that said, they move forward, taking a route that leads to the heart of the city.[break][break]
they frown, "in a way, yes. everything has become commonplace next to things that should actually be monotonous."[break][break]
fern doesn't take any offense in the question. they know that they are restless in a way that is often bordering on unreasonable. they are always full of contradictions.
