Clear skies meant it was a good day for bird watching. Binoculars in hand, Lam strolled through the safari zone. Poppy remained perched atop his head comfortably, content with not stretching her wings out or trying to flutter up into the air just yet. With luck, they'd make some good sightings - and maybe a few good catches while they were at it. Maybe he'd even do some sketching.

“Bingo!” He doesn’t need the binoculars hung around his next to spot the fletchling that hops out into the path, red feathers gleaming brightly in the sun. It pecks around in then rubble, looking for food, which Lam soon obliges with a scattering of bird seed that his pidove also hops down snack on. He snaps a few photos of the pair, saving the candids for later sketching, and then tries tossing a pokeball at it while its guard is lowered.

The mienfoo that came barreling at them after Lam stooped down to college the fletchling’s pokeball was decidedly not a bird. Lam yelped, stumbling backward, only to trip and land smack on the ground in his (failed) effort to get away. Poppy, jostled by the movement fluttered back up into the air—drawing herself up, haughty from the intrusion, she swung out at the fighting-type. Easily, she smacked it away with an indignant DRAGON HAMMER.

With the mienfoo sent scrambling away, Lam and Poppy continued on. While he kept his eyes on the trees above, binoculars raised, the pidove found herself fluttering about. She pecked at the ground, on the hunt for any tasty caterpie or weedle she could find. The sound of a motor rumbling pulled them both from their tasks, and the sudden screech of a varoom barreling their way sent Lam dodging off the path. “Woah!”[break][break]

Poppy chirped, wings lifting her into the air as she slowed its roll with a volley of AIR SLASHES. Unlike the mienfoo, however, Lam chose to toss a safari ball at it—curious to study the pokemon while it wasn’t on a wild tear.

after the chaos created by the varoom passed, lam stopped to let out a breath. "well that was unexpected," he huffed, though an amused smile settled on his face. Holding out his arm for Poppy to return and perch upon, they resumed their walk - but of course he allowed the pause for a brief scratch under the pidove's tiny beak. the distraction, however, carried them right past a lileep and it was permitted to remain peaceful in the shadow of the tree it was rooted under.

A scuffling in the bushes nearby made him pause. Lam readied his binoculars—hopeful to see maybe more fletchlings hopping out into the sun. What emerged instead was a rambunctious pichu. One with an energy that matched another pichu he had at home. “Maybe it could use a playmate,” he muttered to himself as he sent Poppy forward. The pidove blended into the shade of a tree so that the smack of her SHADOW SNEAK startled the mouse and sent it tumbling forward. Right toward Lam’s waiting aim.

From a nearby tree branch, a litten watches the pichu get taken down. After the dust clears, it mewls pitifully—causing Lam to look up. “Poppy look, a litten!” Poppy isn’t exactly impressed, but for Lam it’s a bit nostalgic and bittersweet.[break][break]

They had a litten when he was a kid— him and his dad and his brother. It got loose one day, and got lost. They never managed to find it or return it to its pokeball. Leif Logan had been beside himself over the little cat, and it had been a big part of why Lam caught him the skitty he still had today.[break][break]

But he’d grieved the litten too, and so he eagerly approached this one, carefully coaxing it from the tree where it apparently had gotten stuck, and into his arms. “Aw, good kitty. You’re comin with me,” he said as he scratched its ears, “Rook will love you, and we’ll make sure you don’t get lost.”
