28 discover a vast field filled with impossibly large celesteela that dwarf you inside. periodically, some will launch.
32 have your character or pokemon fall victim to a celesteela's "leech seed" or "ingrain", the vines siphoning you of health, grappling you, or controlling you.
36 discover the amputated/separated arms of CELESTEELA. whether they are shed, cut, or culled from dead CELESTEELA is up to you. smaller arms can be used as flamethrowers to help combat threats as they expel burning gas.
40 battle a SHINY TAPU BULU that resides in this realm naturally. upon proving your mettle, it will grant you a MOON FLUTE that plays a sweet tone filled with gratitude.

a newcomer to visiting what was aptly named the wilds, haoyu had requested a ranger escort. he was plenty capable, but he knew his physical strength was on a decline. it was good to have a capable trainer with him as backup.[break][break]

his energetic grookey had no scruples. she basically bounced around with how fired up she was to see the crater.[break][break]

haoyu stood at the lip of the crater. because of previous travelers, there was a decent path down, but this was a logical waiting point for his escort. the celsteela below were humongous. there were basically buildings, some of them skyscrapers.[break][break]

back here again, but this time without dr monday (Lulu Flint). she tries not to be sour about it, but she doesn't greet haoyu with the same enthusiasm as she might have her older friend (not that he'd notice, really, because even an unenthusiastic 'hello' is a million times more energetic than most anyone else's).

kirin trots a few paces behind, nostrils flaring in greeting when she spies the grookey. after a few times of being here, she's less unsettled by the mountainous celesteela dotting the landscape below them.

she says, "hiya. ranger volosenkova reporting for duty. oop, watch out. these celesteela can leave you with a nasty leech seed if you're not careful." she gestures towards the ingrained root right beside him.

haoyu tipped his chin down in acknowledgement of the ranger. "glad to have some support," he responded earnestly.[break][break]

he looked where she indicated and smiled. "celsteela are such interesting pokemon, aren't they? they don't seem like the kind of pokemon that can learn ingrain or leech seed." he looked at the vast collection of them in the crater.[break][break]

"they are more dangerous than many believe, despite the concern we should have for their size, because they are often stoic and self-concerned." haoyu started down the path that winded down haphazardly to the base of the crater. "unfortunately, we must risk proximity to get a sample of the dust at the base of the crater; i believe the properties of it will be different than that at the lip -- perhaps from cross-contamination of celsteela landing again." he chattered on without self-awareness. environmental forensics held a special place in his heart.[break][break]

okay, she definitely still misses monday, but this is way more than the woman has ever interacted with her. and - AND he's talking about environment science! she buzzes with excitement, geeky smile twisting up her lips as the rest of her raincloud thoughts clear. the sun is shining (well, the ultra crater moon is shining) and everything will be good!

"yeah and have you seen them when they're babies? they don't even evolve, but when they start to shed that outer layer of what i think is a crazy carapace made out of chlorophyll, they like, fill in with limbs. it's like they learned how to evolve without actually doing the whole magic show and sudden shock to their dna.

"they make me think of onions."

haoyu had, in fact, not witnessed baby celsteela. the imagery crafted by saskia forced a laugh from him. "onions," he echoed with amusement.[break][break]

he nearly tripped on something green in the descending path. he corrected, then turned to look at what could not be a pipe but rather... a celsteela arm itself.[break][break]

"wild," he commented breathlessly. "there are not many pokemon that fall apart in pieces like this, and fewer still that break functionally. these arms are frequently used in construction." he had helped out at an alolan firestation that used one for managing forest brush. he was going to add on with a story, but some odd musical notes caught his attention. he turned from saskia back towards the path to see-[break][break]

sasky wants to hear more about that. sasky wants to hear all about that. ultra beast arms that are shed and harvested sustainably and are then used for infrastructure? she's so in love with the idea, she could swoon. she feels pretty prepared for anything the place could throw at her.

except, well. that.

the tapu bulu makes her hair stand on end. she doesn't know if it remembers her, but kirin certainly remembers it. "oh gods, wait - !" she starts, but the tapu bulu is already on the offensive.

kirin launches herself between the oncoming pokemon and haoyu, antlers clacking against the legendary's painted, wooden arms.

"it's not a friend! it's not a friend! we've got this, sir! please stay back!" she says gallantly, but when she takes a step forward, she stumbles. one of the ingrained roots had snuck up on her and wrapped itself around her ankle without her noticing.

"wahh! wait!"

her concern was endearing, but he knew the tapus to be protective but not cruel.[break][break]

well. this one did look different, and its home island was certainly not here in hoenn. perhaps, this was not the same tapu bulu he knew from tales in alola.[break][break]

her pokemon is between her and the deity. he extends an arm to catch her, though the angle is awkward and he nearly goes down with her. "what makes you so sure he is not a friend?" he does his best to help her to her feet, though something about the whole situation is setting off an internal alarm bell for him.[break][break]

maybe it's an illusion? "grookey, get us some distance without upsetting the celsteela below." grookey nods stoically and jumps over saskia's pokemon to land underneath the deity. she makes a rude gesture and hoots, taunting the god and moving a little further down the descending path to lead the tapu down and given the trainers some real breathing room. "is it wise to fight a deity?"[break][break]

"well, i don't think he likes me very much," she says, annoyed as she tries (and fails) to yank her leg free. she still spares a grateful look for catching her before she can fall. with a sigh, she crouches down, fumbling for the pocket knife clipped to her belt. it takes a bit of hacking and sawing, but eventually she loosens the thick root enough to wriggle herself free.

"or, well, i don't know. all the ranger reports say it attacks when you see it. and then it gives you a flute if you're good enough to beat it."

she clips the knife back on and exchanges them for the mini pair of binoculars she actually remembered to bring.

"here. there's a temple a couple miles that way. past that field." the one with the impossibly large celesteela. she hands the binoculars to him and points so he can follow her finger.

his concern grew as she insisted the tapu bulu here attacked on sight. if it was upset, he didn't want his thwackey to continue taunting the deity and upsetting it. he reached for her binoculars, but before he could secure his grip on it, the tapu down the path had thrown thwackey right at them.[break][break]

haoyu ducked down instinctively.[break][break]

thwackey, to her credit, landed on her feet on the other side of the trainers, but the territorial god was approaching all of them, now. "wood hammer," he instructed, not wanting her to screech and damage their hearing. saskia had a lot of years ahead of her, so he didn't want her to struggle with hearing loss as he did.[break][break]

thwackey flew over them to smack the deity with her grass move. haoyu grew more serious. "it looks like we have no choice but to prove ourselves."[break][break]

no choice indeed. the tapu bulu isn't out for blood, that much sasky knows, but it still doesn't make itself out to be an easy target. a rookie trainer and an almost-old man really don't stand much of a chance, do they?

but she trusts in kirin and sometimes that's all you need, right?

wood hammer knocks it aside and it looks like kirin wants to ram into it at full speed, but something about the bulu's movements makes sasky think it's up to something, so she calls, "no, kir! confuse it!"

shadows and lights dance amidst kirin's horns and the tapu bulu's prepared shot goes wide, blowing up a section of the celesteela off in the distance. sasky hoots and pumps a fist into the air.

"go on! while it's open!" she grins at her traveling companion.

saskia's wyrdeer moves masterfully. it creates an opening for thwackey to hit the deity with razor leaf. tapu bulu tanks the attack as it prepares its own, but the gap in time gives thwackey a long enough moment to get up and close. she jumps onto tapu bulu and screeches directly in his face.[break][break]

the deity flinches backwards. thwackey prepares more leaves, but the deity seems uninterested in a full-blown battle. was it just playing around?[break][break]

it flees quickly. beneath where it had just been was... a flute? "was this here before?"[break][break]
