It was surprising for someone who hated physical contact as much as he did.

Thankfully, he had perfected the art of weaving his way through crowds of people without so much as brushing up against them. A skill he had perfected over the years of his life.

Other than the crowds of people he had to avoid brushing up against, today was a good day. Or at least it was until he heard an explosion. It took him longer than he thought was necessary for him to realize they weren’t under attack. Instead, it seemed a group of Voltorb had found their way into the city.

Sidestepping another person who seemed to be in a hurry to get away from the chaos, he found himself near a young woman. At first glance, she seemed to be his age, maybe a bit older. She also seemed to be the only other person not losing their head.

Chewing his lip, he made his way closer. “D-Do you know wh-what could’ve set th-them off?” He asked, seeming more nervous about addressing the woman; than the fact, Voltorb seemed intent on self-destructing themselves around Mauville.[break] Elinor Anderson

It was worrying that the Voltorb would just cause so much havoc. He had grown up knowing everything happened for a reason. So there had to be a reason that the Voltorb were being destructive.

Unfortunately, it seemed the young woman he had chosen to speak with was just as clueless as he was.

At the question, his gaze flickered briefly toward her. “I’m ju-just starting out as a tr-trainer. I'm still learning the r-ropes so to speak,” he admitted, a bit embarrassed about starting out so late. Most started when they were kids, but not him.

He was actually so new that he tended to just allow his Pokémon to do whatever they wanted when it came to moves.

“An-Anyway even if I’m not th-that skilled, I’m more th-than willing to help,” he told her, figuring the people trying to corral the Voltorb would need as much help as they could get. That, and he couldn’t turn a blind eye to people who needed help, not again.[break] Elinor Anderson

The fact that she would be willing to help him out with battling was definitely a surprise. “Re-Really, thank you,” he said, seeming to relax minimally now that he knew he wouldn’t be thrown into the deep end. He was still way too new to the battling scene for that.

As she took out the armband, he couldn’t help but eye it curiously. He had seen others wearing them; they meant something. What was it again?

Certain people wore them.

Umm, Range's, wasn’t it? No, that wasn’t right. That was another word for terrain that was hilly and mountainous.

It wasn’t Range's, but that word was close. Now what was it again?

Ranger’s? Yes, that was right. The term was rangers, a group of people tasked with the preservation of Pokémon and wildlife, or something like that.

Her voice pulled him out of his thoughts, drawing his attention to her. Committing the name to memory, he would then introduce himself. “I-It’s a pleasure to me-meet you, Elinor; my n-name’s Beckett, though Beck w-works just as well,” he commented, flashing the woman a shy smile.

At the suggestion, he would nod before releasing Sesi from her pokeball. Upon being released, the larger-than-average Alonan Ninetales would look around before turning her attention to Beckett.

“We need to help these people out,” he would explain, keeping his attention fixed on Sesi as he spoke to her. Once that was done, he would wait for Elinor to take the lead.[break] Elinor Anderson

He wondered if it was right to lump himself in as a ranger; he wasn’t one after all. Though he supposed, in the long run, it didn’t matter. Not now, at least. What really mattered was keeping these people safe and safely removing the wild Pokémon from the city.

Still, to avoid brushing up against anyone, he would try to take up as little space as he could. considering his height was a bit hard—not that he was really tall, but he was tall enough. It did help that he didn’t have the best eating habits, making him slender enough to get through the crowd of people without touching anyone on his own, at least until the Steelix started to help get people out of the way.

At the question, he eyed Sesi thoughtfully. He had an idea; hopefully it would work. If not, he supposed Elinor would be able to lend a helping hand.

“Sesi, do you think you can rapid-fire an ice beam attack?” he asked the snowy-furred fox.

Answer would start firing Ice Beam at the remaining Voltorb in as quick a succession as she could manage.[break] Elinor Anderson

It was like the first few didn’t see the Ice Beam coming and fell very quickly. Each time one fainted, he had to resist flinching. While it was true that he was pursuing the life of a trainer, he still struggled with the idea of hurting Pokemon. He knew, in most cases, that after a bit of healing or rest, they would be fine and that he wasn’t really hurting him. Just that knowledge helped.

While the first few fell quickly, the rest didn’t seem to be keen to do so. Seeing the electric attacks coming towards his Pokémon, he tensed. Luckily, the Steelix managed to disrupt the attacks, keeping Sesi safe while she continued to fire off Ice Beam at the remaining Voltorb.

Soon enough, there was only one Voltorb left. Seeing it begin to glow, his eyes widened, and subconsciously, he moved closer to Sesi. In his haste, he nearly tripped over his feet, making him have to catch his Balance. Blushing, his blush only deepening when the Steelix surrounded the Voltorb to protect them, he situated himself beside Sesi, running his hand through her fur.

His blush had just died down when Elinor started it up again with her praise. “I-It was no-nothing,” he mumbled, refusing to meet her eyes, not that the latter was uncommon with him being shy and all.

“An-Anyway, I really should be going,” he commented, glancing at her briefly. "Anyway, it wa-was nice me-meeting you,” he said as he returned Sesi to her pokeball, replacing her with a Hisuian Braviary who he would immediately mount.

With one last wave, he would take off, flying in the direction of Slatesport and beyond that to Dewford.[break] Elinor Anderson
