Beau moved to scrub the tears from his cheeks quickly, scuffing them along the back of his hand and breaking the would-be staring contest he was embroiled in with the Xatu. Just as well - he'd sooner take ten steps off the five-step cliff before him than relive another moment with his father.

Jack's movement next to him caught his attention - and darn it, he had to stop falling into these reveries when he was in the company of his friend. That was no way to spend his time.

"So, uh," he began, reaching to rub the back of his head nervously. "At least it's a nice place, right? Definitely don't see this in Hoenn." He flicked his eyes to the left, but couldn't bring himself to look at the Psychic-type again. "Could do without the bird, though. What do you say we call it a day, brah?"

He didn't think he could take much more of the strangely elevated silence of this place, and he'd rather be facing down the Shadow Persian, or the mysteriously talking pokegear. Wait - if someone really were watching them, watching this play out, did they know what that vision entailed? He shook his head dismissively - there's no way they could have.

Still, he'd prefer a rapid exit to think about the ramifications of repeated entries into this system when he wasn't currently being subjected to it directly. He had a hankering Jack felt the same.

He blinked rapidly, finding himself back in the simulated Alola instead of the memory of Hulbury. His mind tugged at the thought of a simulated memory inside a simulation but the immediate headache made him set the thought aside.[break][break]

What had been the point of this, showing Jack a memory of when he entered that writing contest in high school? His parents had never read it. Probably for the best, since it had been about him finding his own way in the world without their presence in his life. Looking back, that early morning in his room now seemed like Fate. If he hadn't won the contest and gotten the scholarship and recognition from it he never would have landed those partnership deals or started his travel blog. Without the blog, he wouldn't have come to Hoenn.[break][break]

He wouldn't have met Beau.[break][break]

Looking over at the man rubbing the back of his head, Jack could see the nervousness in the gesture. As he had become so practiced doing, Jack forced a smile on his face before responding.[break][break]

"Call it a day, call it a night, call it a week. All good options to me," he said with an upbeat tone, punching Beau playfully in his enormous bicep.[break][break]

"By the by, what are you doing this Autumn? Maybe we could visit real Alola without the bird," he said, wondering what Beau had seen in the strange Xatu's eyes.[break][break]
