MARCH UPDATE

After two weeks in the Petalburg Woods, Scout's decided it's probably about time to make his way back to civilization. Not because he doesn't want to stay out there, of course — he's just running low on his Nickit's favorite Pokéblocks.

Besides, he's packed his fishing rod for a reason. And the weather's nice. Scout decides to enjoy the brisk winds and let his Pokémon take a dip by the dock. It's not a long walk to Petalburg City from here, and he's got plenty of time to make the journey before nightfall. Scout picks a spot on the horizon and sends his line deep. Then he settles in for a relaxing afternoon of watching the bobber bouncing up and down with the waves.

"Mm." He grunts in greeting, groaning as he settles into a seated position of his own. A mawile plops next to him and gives SCOUT WILDER a small wave.

In silence, Fletcher tosses his own line.

Scout watches the man approach out of the corner of his eye. He's not attempting to hide his footsteps or sneak up on the ranger, so he figures it's a friendly face. This theory is confirmed when the man pulls out a rod of his own. Scout appreciates the man's smooth cast and the soft twang of the rod's flexible body snapping into place. He gives him a nod.

In the excitement of a bite, Scout loses track of who reels in first — on his own line, a few gentle tugs is all it takes to find a Horsea bobbing at the surface of the coastal waters. Hastily he unclips a Pokeball from his belt and summons his Shroomish, who appears in a flash. "Shroom?"

Disappointment flashes beneath crimson locks. With a flick of his wrist, Fletcher returns the monkey to the water. Let it bite someone less fortunate.

Instead his attention shifts to the individual nearby.

"Careful ya don't fall in, kid. Can guarantee ya the water is miserable."

"Heard." Scout says. Though Hoenn beaches tend to offer good swimming at this time of year, Route 104's brackish coastal water transitions sharply to sea much sooner than most with no other landmasses besides the hectometers-far Decolore Islands to interrupt the tides. And every child of the island is raised on cautionary fables of the turbulent underwater eddies created by intersection of fresh and salt water that sweep away one or two unsuspecting tourists each year like clockwork.

Really it's his Shroomish he ought to be worried for. Maybe let's stay away from contact moves. "Stay back," he tells his Pokemon. The Shroomish doesn't have to be told twice. "Use Seed Bomb."

The Horsea shoots a few bubbles their way, but Scout pulls the neck of his poncho up and weathers the spray. It feels a bit like being hit with seafoam from breaking waves on a windy day. Refreshing, almost.

A few back and forth rounds with Shroomish having the type advantage, and the Horsea tuckers out quickly. Its movements settle. Scout waits until he has a clear shot to toss a Pokeball gently underhand and bop the Horsea on the forehead. It's pulled into the ball, which bounces back up to the trio into the dock; Scout leans over the edge of the dock and snatches the Pokeball out of the air before it drops into the water. It wiggles only a few times in his hand before growing still.

"Nice job," he tells his Shroomish, giving it a gentle scratch. Shroom shroom.

Happy with the catch and evidence of active waters, Scout returns his line to the waves. Out of the corner of his eye he prompts, curiously, "Lookin' for somethin', or,"

"Good fight there. Looks like you two have the making of some solid teamwork." He envied trainers like this; ones not bogged down with the responsibility he had.

"How long ya two been partners?"

His own was sitting on the pier's edge, feet dangling, swinging over the water. She leans forward, eyes wide and curious, to match that of a Frogadier's.

The two stare at each other before the water-type croaks, starling his Mawile. She yelps but doesn't move, instead, gaining a measure of courage as she echoes the croak to the best she can.

Smiling, he rubs the Mawile's head, training his attention for the answer that would follow his question.

Partners. It's a good question.

Scout hadn't grown up with Pokémon around — his parents just weren't house Pokémon people. When he had first found Shroomish, injured after a wildfire, his intention had always been to release the wild Pokémon afterwards. But for some reason it stuck around. And when Scout had first joined the Rangers, they were both wet behind the ears, complete beginners to all this battling stuff.

"Just a few years now," he says. "But friends for longer. You guys?"

The man reels in a Frogadier, and Scout leans back on his hands to watch the forthcoming battle with interest.

He watches, amused, as the two argue back and forth in their language.

“Much the same. He confirms, eyes still tracking the duo lazily, a touch of mirth in those amber hues.

“Found this one abandoned in an alley scrounging for food in the bins. Territorial, if you’d believe it. Now she thinks she’s prim and proper like a lady, this one.”

He shakes his head, emotions conflicting inside his chest.

“You one of those future Champion types then?”

In the city, huh? "She must have been far from home," Scout says; the story is another reminder of the spreading effects of habitat loss, and the displaced Pokémon left behind. He frowns down at his rod. The least they can do is fish sustainably out here.

When the Yanmega approaches, zipping up and around Scout's head in a dizzying blur, he's torn briefly on whether to attempt capture. The bug-type Pokémon around here are common and not in any particular danger of population loss. But he figures he's already caught one Pokémon today.

So he waves the Yanmega away with an open palm, and Shroomish puffs a few toxic spores in its direction. Eventually it gets the hint and flies away. Scout watches it skim the surface of the water.

His gaze flickers back to the tussling Pokémon on the pier, then to the man. "Nah," Scout says, "Don't care for battling too much. I like the outdoors, though. Think we could protect it better."
