After spending the last few sleepless hours pacing around his apartment, Eddie finally set off as the first rays of light started to creep their way across the horizon, [break][break]

The Lucario jogging alongside him barked sharply in reply. Eddie smiled as the entrance to the tunnel came into view; this place was pretty nostalgic. The sight of it was almost enough to make him feel halfway normal, [break][break]

The rough terrain of the cavern would help keep him on his toes, Eddie reasoned, as he slowed down long enough to flick on the little pocket flashlight clipped to the front of his shirt. [break][break]

A little rounded snout poked its way out from behind a rock. Eddie smiled a little, but didn't slow down as the Numel sniffed at a bit of lichen growing on the tunnel wall, [break][break]

“Mornin',” he called softly as he passed. His Lucario mirrored his greeting with a bark. [break][break]

If the Numel had noticed them, it made no indication that it did so as it toddled away.

As trainer and Pokemon closed in on the Verdanturf end of the tunnel, they found themselves suddenly accompanied by a black shape rolling alongside them. Eddie turned and smiled a little as he recognized the tire tread-like markings of the Donphan's trunk, [break][break]

“Mornin' to you, too.” [break][break]

The Donphan also paid them no mind as she veered toward another winding tunnel that branched off from the main path. Eddie watched as she bounced over a particularly large boulder in her path and caught some impressive air, [break][break]

Batou barked incredulously and shook his head. Huh, tough crowd.

But before Eddie and Batou could finally breach the far end of the tunnel, some bit of rock shifted, and they suddenly found the passage blocked, [break][break]

“What the-” [break][break]

A large head framed by spikes rose from the ground below them, and the massive body it belonged to shook off layers of dirt and debris. Chestnut eyes looked up with sleepy regard, [break][break]

“Oh, uh, hey,” Eddie chuckled bashfully, and the Torterra snorted, “You're kinda in the way.” [break][break]

The Continent Pokemon moved a little closer. She nudged her nose against Eddie's leg, and something suddenly occurred to him, [break][break]

“Oh, shit, you must'a been hibernating for the winter, huh? Bet yer hungry as all hell.” [break][break]

Eddie produced a protein bar from his pocket, broke off a piece, and offered it to the tortoise. The Pokemon greedily devoured it, and looked up at him expectantly. Eddie grinned a little, [break][break]

“Maybe I shoulda tried bribery when we first met, huh Batou?” he chuckled as he produced a Poke Ball and offered it to the Torterra. [break][break]

The Lucario just growled low with some indignation as the wild Pokemon was spirited away to its capsule. Eddie gave the jackal a playful nudge with his elbow, [break][break]

“Tell ya what; how about we grab sommethin' to eat when we hit Verdanturf?” [break][break]

Batou suddenly perked up, eyes wide with unbridled excitement, [break][break]

“Atta boy!” Eddie chuckled, and with the path clear, they resumed their run. [break][break]

It was only a few yards more until they cleared the tunnel, and a short jog after to reach the nearest fast food joint. And not long after, man and Pokemon sat on a park bench, scarfing down a pair of bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches, and Eddie felt more like himself than he had in what felt like a long time.
