“Yea… I got them when you were missing,” June admitted. Her face turned nearly as red as the birds, and she turned away slightly. It was a rather hard forty-eight hours, and the management of stress emerged in a strange way.

Annalise should be thankful it wasn’t an equal amount of Varooms instead. That’d be worse, in both sound and smell.

“And no– but I don’t know what music you like,” she said. “I throw on the kind of music you hear at a club on a weekend night on full blast.”

EDM? No thoughts, thick coherency. It dominated the senses and removed all sense of self. Yet it also gave most people a massive headache and the strong urge to vomit. That’d be worse than a room full of Varooms, somehow. Even now, the Fletchlings distracted June from what she wanted to say.

Oh, right. “The point is… I don’t know what to do to help you. I don’t think I ever will. But… if what works for me works for you, then that’s all I can do. Pause it, and kick the can down the road.”

“And promise that I’ll be prepared next time,” she said. Her attention returned to Annalise, and she squeezed her tighter. “I don’t know what to do exactly against… y’know. But I’ll figure out a plan to keep you safe. Away from the bad stuff-- without taking the bullet with you. We'll both be right as rain.”

[break][break]she sounds perplexed. she hadn't been gone from hoenn more than a couple days, even though it had felt much longer in her ward. somewhere in the region, an ecosystem is deprived of a sizeable flock of fletchling, all relocated to her bedroom. [break][break]annalise can imagine june sitting in her own room as she continues. it starts out hazy, like the first brushstrokes of a watercolor painting, then solidifies into a picture: june, surrounded by the chirping of fletchling and the thumping bass of generic club music. [break][break] it's too idle for her. [break][break]june holds her tighter. many people have promised her safety, but all have failed. her chest aches somewhere deep beneath her ribs, yet she gives into the moment all the same. it's a promise kept for now, for this very moment. [break][break]"we will." [break][break]her shoulder shifts, freeing her arm enough to loop it around june. [break][break]"there better actually be zero bullets taken in your plan when you get around to making it."

For now, the moment is enough. Even if the fears still exist, the problems lay dormant, and nothing is actually better– they can pretend it is. For this lousy few minutes, everything can be alright. Just June, Annalise, a Houndoom, and a baker's dozen of Fletchling.

“Well, a bullet isn’t the worst thing in the world,” June said casually. Even now, the thick thrum of chirps and comfort made it hard to picture the time she’d been shot. It hurt, but not enough to physically manifest in the moment. The Fletchlings prevented it. “But I’ll think of something. Maybe a bulletproof vest. Or I’ll just be faster.”

“Or…” Not even the Fletchling could stop her when her mind traversed to another dimension. Much like the kind Annalise was stolen away to. Dreams, visions, ideas of the future, of what was in store.

There were far worse fates than to escape to a false reality. One where everything was fine, and nothing went wrong. That’d be nice– if only she could live there. And Annalise could come with.
