Two Thousand Years Too Early

“No one can, even if they wanted to.”
It was the easiest, most understandable part of Shred. She wasn’t too far from him, in that sense. If they wanted something, they’d do whatever they could to make it happen. For Shred, that was whatever tickled his fancy. Including her demise. For her…
Well, she was in a bunker with a high-up Team Rocket member after going against the biggest war leader of the League. Not too many would do that for fun. Even fewer would justify it. Only she would try to keep him here.
“We’re… what now? We have names?” June gave him the most confused look known to man. Did Shred do that? That bitch couldn’t leave her alone for a single second, could he? Even worse, it didn’t sound half bad. Damn it all. “Whatever, not important.”
Were their only true desires to be free? From what? The world, the region, fate, or some other thing they didn’t even know about? To be free was to be unshackled, but she’d been shackled for a while now. It was impossible to imagine a life without chains on her legs. Even after so many years without them, they’d left a permanent mark on her.
“I dunno,” June shrugged wistfully. Violet stared intently at her and with much different intent than the still pissed-off Matchstick. “You sound like Grigori right now. Even on that damn beach, I just wanted…”
Her words to Freya echo loudly now. To herself.
“Just wanted something. Not telling you, though,” she cleared her through loudly. Obviously. “Boundless secret I’m afraid. Since that’s what we are. You wouldn’t get it.”
Unfortunately, he was the one person who would. Everyone else would’ve jumped at the chance or ended things right there. Only she would kick the can down the road.
“But it wasn’t freedom. Freedom doesn’t make things better.” Freedom didn’t bring back Dad. Just let her think about it more often. “We’re both probably too stubborn. Won’t take no for an answer.”
