The office was a wreck. Papers strewn across the desk, case files piled high, a half-empty coffee mug perched precariously near the edge. Cecilia tapped her pen against the desk with a sharp, repetitive rhythm, her magenta eyes darting to the clock for the fifth time in as many minutes.

She leaned back in her chair, her gaze shifting to the window. Rain slid down the glass in uneven streams, distorting the view of Slateport’s grimy skyline. It was a fitting backdrop for her mood—and for the case she was neck-deep in. A seemingly-hopeless defense for Team Rocket, an organization that thrived on chaos and rarely cared about its legal standing. They cared only about results.

And results, for Cecilia, required information. Evidence. Leverage. The file she was waiting for would make or break the argument she’d crafted, a threadbare defense hanging by a single fraying string. Without it, she may as well not even show up to court.

Her fingers curled tighter around the pen, the faint scent of ink rising as she clicked it compulsively. The waiting wasn’t what frayed her nerves—it was the stakes. Losing was never an option, not when the people she worked for dealt in absolutes. Either you won, or you disappeared.

She could only hope that her delivery comes by soon.

Lucky for Cecilia, they had the best person on the case. June Sleigh was as fast as they got, and always needed her to do something. Even stuff that wasn’t exactly related to his field. But his field was now Rocket, and she now had some… essential things in her hands. At least this’d be the fastest the lawyer had ever received papers.

Unlucky for Cecilia, they also had the worst person on the case. June Sleigh was not always aware of her actions. That’s why, when she ran into the building fresh off the back of a large Talonflame, it was her small sling backpack that absorbed the droplets for her.

A mistake she only started to realize after she burst through the door. “Heyyo, I’m here with the…

Oh.” She looked down at her backpack. Soaked to the very core. And when she pulled out the oh-so-precious file, it fared almost as well. Which was poorly. “Um. Sorry, it’s a little… you know.

Carefully, she slid some other papers and knick-knacks off to the side. Her coffee mug danced precariously on the edge of the desk as it joined the rest of her stuff. The files plopped onto the desk sadly, and water seeped from it in all directions. Some of which joined the drip-drip-drip from the delivery-girls own clothes.

You got a hair-dryer in here?” The heterochromatic girl chuckled nervously. What, did their fax machine not work?

Cecilia stared at the dripping bundle of paper, a muscle twitching in her cheek as her pulse pounded behind it. Every tick of the clock burned brighter in her vision, a physical ache that spread through her skull.

"I—" she began, only to stop and swallow hard. "I have a meeting in twenty-five minutes." Her voice was flat, tone drained of all inflection but somehow conveying volumes of irritation and despair. She used her pen to lift the soggy corner of a page, staring in horror as ink dripped and blurred. Key evidence. Devastating testimony.

This—this soaking wet disaster—was supposed to be her salvation. Instead... she glanced to her empty coffee cup, feeling the sting of caffeine withdrawal just then kick in.

Casting one last displeased look at the sodden papers, she closed her eyes, held back a sigh, and schooled her expression to practiced neutrality as she rose from her seat. As much as the sight pained her, Cecilia reminded herself that she was hardly in a position to critique professionalism. Not these days.

Crossing the room with impatient strides, she retrieved a spare hairdryer from her personal storage, knowing that this wouldn't be the first nor last time she would need to make document rescuing maneuvers. Inwardly lamenting the amount of water that just interfered with her desk, Cecilia handed the device towards June, taking care to lift some papers away from the brewing puddles.

"Faster than the last courier," she noted blandly, flipping idly through the damp sheets in resignation as she returned to her seat behind the fortress of paperwork. It was now abundantly clear the night just got a lot longer, whether she wished it or not. "Now go ahead and fix your mess."

Oh.

That hadn’t been put in the thing. If she’d known the actual time crunch, then she might not have been so reckless. Or at least offered to make another copy or something. As was, now she looked stupid. And that wasn’t important right now.

June took the hair dryer with an awkward chuckle and an apologetic smile. “Well, I’m sure they’ll be good in that time. Yea! Yea…

Soon enough, the office was filled with the cheap motor's whine as hot air blew onto the exposed papers. She’d scattered them on the ground, held down by whatever paperweights Cecilia let her have. A few of her own joined in on the fun, like her phone and charger.

Not that she needed a charger anymore, but easier to explain than the fucky avatar powers.

Unfortunately, boredom settled in quickly. Papers flitted against the wind, but it wasn’t enough to keep her short attention span.

So…” she crossed her legs and propped her head on her free hand, “what’s this case about? Sounds pretty important. Did anyone die? Do you have pictures?

Cecilia paused midway in responding with a reflexive witty comment, her expression twisting subtly into what looked like genuine annoyance only for a split second before it was wiped clean by practiced smoothness. She resisted the urge to point out that June's curiosity seemed quite misplaced given her nonchalant handling of the situation.

Instead, Cecilia clasped her hands together atop her desk, composing her answer deliberately. "It's a complicated matter," she replied evasively, leaving out most details as she studied June's expectant expression. Did she really imagine Cecilia would divulge classified client information? Perhaps inane chatter helped some digest the gravity of legal matters – but Cecilia despised chit-chat, especially regarding a case at risk thanks to said chatty courier's error.

As she gauged the younger woman's reaction, Cecilia silently acknowledged that June was only doing her job, albeit somewhat ineptly – and that she was technically at fault for not clarifying deadlines. A more thoughtful employee might've ensured the condition of the documents pre-delivery. Yet... blame didn't solve problems.

Struggling to quell mounting frustration, she reached over to pluck one of the slightly less soggy pages from the floor. Squinting at the still-readable print, she drummed her nails on the desk in agitation.

"No one died," she finally bit off wryly as realization struck. This whole ordeal reminded her far too keenly of how thin her veneer of control was lately. Why her recent activities were such a gamble - she hated unpredictability. Clients bleeding cash with delusions of grandeur, junior associates sticking their noses where they shouldn't...

"But I'm sure we both know that there are varying degrees of what it means to 'die'," Cecilia continued, eyebrows lowering. "And I am certainly one of these degrees of death if I don't figure this case out."

Grah, you sound just like someone I know,” June huffed as she returned her attention to the papers. Slowly, yet surely, they were losing all their soaking wetness. In time for whatever Cecilia needed? Who knew. But it was working. And somehow more interesting than the lawyer. These papers could actually tell her lots.

I don’t think there are any degrees to death, actually,” June said nonchalantly. Sure, would love to engage in such a non-answer. But the delivery girl didn’t have the patience. “I think you’ll just die die. Given our… yea.

Bosses. Upper management. The brass. While they could do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted, she and Cecilia shared at least one thing: their total lack of control. They could only nod and hope their work wasn’t bad enough. If it was, then they never woke up.

Arceus, that sounded nice right now.

A-anyway, just figure the case out and you’ll be good! It can’t be that hard, right? Or, I could say that if I knew anything about it,” June stared back at the woman, her annoyance hot on the lawyer’s trail. And apparently, her obliviousness was on it too.

C’mon, can’t imagine It's anything that serious if no one died. What, they steal a few grand? Beat up an old lady?
