Intersections between crimes were not a rarity in the world. Occasionally, a bank robbery would intersect with a corruption scheme that was otherwise completely unrelated. Occasionally, a murder would cross paths with a trafficking scheme. This sort of thing was a lot more common than most people believed. Elaine had seen that reality firsthand many times in her short life.
So, when Elaine was on the tail of a smuggling ring, she was not surprised when she caught onto the trail of something far more nefarious in the process. While it wasn't related to her primary job, she had enough that she could make a move whenever she needed on that front. So, rather than finishing things off, she decided to traipse upon a new branch.
After all, she could deal with the other at any time. This one had been a bit more pressing. It all simply started with some abnormal transactions she reviewed, but the investigation had ended up taking her to an unassuming warehouse on the distal portions of Slateport City, overlooking the water.
As she had made her way to the warehouse, however, she noticed that things were eerily quiet. Further inspection showed flecks of rusted red-brown on one of the doors. There weren't many, but it clearly looked like someone had attempted to wipe the area clean.
So, while nobody was watching, she climbed up the emergency ladder on the side onto the metal balcony on the side of the upper floor. As she kept low, she looked through the windows and eventually found that one had been left open. There had been nobody on the upper mezzanine near any of the controls, so she entered through the window.
The space had been large enough that she could not see any of what was going on below, but she was able to lock eyes onto a large operation instrument planted by the railing.
However, as she took her first step onto the inside of the warehouse, she felt metallic sensation rising up to her nose.
Her eyes widened as she saw the gruesome sight left seemingly untampered on the top floor. A man who looked to be one of the workers from the warehouse had been unceremoniously bisected and left there, the remnants of his blood oozing on the ground.
It was horrifying, but she could not do much for the dead at this stage. The most she could do is recover his body when all was said and done for his family to perform his last rites.
Taking care to avoid stepping in any of the blood or making any noise, she slowly made her way to the console and crouched behind it. After looking out from it and through the railing, what she saw was...
Almost nothing left...
There were only three people left. Two of them were using Machokes to help move what looked to be a large crate--the last one that had been left there. They didn't draw as much attention, however, as the man who was standing there with them and giving orders.
Elaine quickly caught her breath as she obscured herself from him immediately.
She knew him. She had never interacted with him in person, but she had seen him during the incident in the Megalopolan ship recently. He was one of the people who had been intent on murdering Cyllora and Pecharunt. Moreover, he was one of the three underbosses of Rocket.
Of all the luck, I had to run into him of all people?!
He had clearly been overseeing some Rocket related operation. From the looks of it, smuggling some supplies from a warehouse they had recently taken over.
What am I supposed to do here? Am I even able to stand up to him? Her mind flashed abck to the memory of the man's own power that she had seen. Compared to him, she was...
No. They're almost done, which means they'll vacate this place soon and erase all traces. There's no point in turning back. There'll be no evidence to comb over.
She had to act here. I don't care how underhanded I have to be. I can't lose here.
The console behind her likely connected to some of the hooks and contraptions lined up above her. So, she could probably use those to her advantage. Maybe even some of the vehicles would be useful.
She had to come up with a plan soon. She could only hope that her presence hadn't been noticed yet. She had seen his face, after all. So, there was no reason he couldn't have seen her or seen something rustling up there in that same moment.
