The quiet was deafening again.[break]
Idle thoughts, creeping shadows, clawing and scratching against the pull into the depths...[break][break]
She blinked, a heaving breath, hands shuttering above the countertop, gripping the small knife that she held having just finished cutting up some fresh berries. Tired, distant eyes glanced out to the apartment, an attempt to focus on anything else.[break]
Sunlight... Sunlight coming in through the open blinds, no dimnness or darkness. Breathing... Steady, even breaths that weren't strained by a toxic chain.[break][break]
Him, asleep on the couch, exhausted and worn just as she was, but there, she could see his face...[break][break]
Yuina took a moment to herself, smoothing out her hands over the countertop, leaned over and gritting her teeth at the phantom pains that coursed through her anxieties. She took up the bowl that she filled with cut berries and placed it on the windowsill, just beside the sleeping green sprite that was laid out on a pillow in the sun.[break][break]
Softly, carefully, Yuina settled herself into the couch close to Doug, one of her various books in hand. If she had any luck, she could lean into her own exhaustion for just a little while, and maybe be granted a little bit more sleep. But idle thoughts... creeping shadows... she couldn't keep the sight of being splattered in blood at bay for long.

He was out like a light, and yet.

The couch shifted beneath him, and his eyes snapped open. Immediately.

"Hn?" He hummed, sitting more upright as he reflexively began to stretch, arms reaching for the ceiling as his humming turned into the low rumbles of a groan-yawn.

His body creaked slightly, pops generated by bad sleeping posture, before he settled back besides Yuina, leaning into her warmth lazily, cheek to her neck as he finished his yawn against her clavicle and shoulder, warm breath blowing on the fabric of her top.

"Hngh... What did I miss?" He asked, drowsy eyes fleeting over her, over the book in hand, and then lingering on bruises and cuts. "What'cha readin?"

No sooner did she sit down to nestle into the couch than did Doug start, awake and leaning up to stretch before she could even open the covers of her book. It hadn't been her intention to wake him, only wanting to settle into the couch again to just be close to him. To know that their comfort together was real, more than just half real within the dream scape they had spent so much time in.[break][break]
Little bit by little bit her shadows stilled as Doug moved, leaning into her and nestled into the crook of her neck. His weight against her helped ground her, his warmth soothed her thrumming anxieties, and she drew in an even, steady breath at just the sound of his voice.[break][break]
"Nothing...," she leaned in, a soft kiss to the side of his head.[break]
"You should go back to sleep... I didn't mean to wake you," Yuina offered softly, her voice just above a whisper. That was all the the last couple of days had been, rest, sleep when they could... If they could... They both needed it, as did everyone else they'd been imprisoned with.[break][break]
She glanced down to the book in her hands, thumbs brushing over the cover. History; The Foundation of the Celestica Culture, one of the many historical texts that she poured over for her studies and research.[break]
"Anything... I haven't been able to go back to sleep yet...," she murmured.

He leaned into her lips, humming. "Hn. Don't sound like nothin'."

She had a particular way of sounding melancholic that he could pick up on by now.

"Too bad, I'm up." He said, grinning lazily, wrapping an arm around her waist as he nuzzled into her neck. "Now ya gotta deal with meeee..."

He peppered her with butterfly kisses, stopping only once her little problem was mentioned. His brows gathered together in a worried frown, his hand slowly moving up her sides.

"Is it your injuries? Or...?" He hadn't been able to look after her properly since they got away.

His hand slid over her own, moving towards the book before slowly closing it. "Maybe I can chat you to sleep."

In spite of her hurt, her fear, her darkness looming at the very frayed edges of her thoughts, Yuina still leaned into his comfort as Doug woke a little more, sliding an arm behind her to wrap around her waist. He grinned into her neck, nuzzling into her, her pulse picked up the slightest bit, he could still bring butterflies to her stomach no matter how dark she got it seemed.[break][break]
His sweet, soft kisses subsided though, she knew that her tone would give way to how dim she was truly feeling. There was no chance that she could hide it, mask it, not right now, not when everything was still so fresh...[break][break]
"It'd be a lot easier if injuries were only ever surface level, wouldn't it," she returned after a moment, she knew she still had bruises, cuts, even some magenta hues that showed in the veins of her paled skin... But it would all go away with time. Time...[break][break]
She did put her book down, exchanging her hold on the leather binding for his hand instead, her eyes flicked to the small green sprite that still remained asleep in the sun... Her body grew tense.[break][break]
"Do you know what that Pokemon is...?"

It was high time he dealt with that. It shouldn't have waited to begin with.

He lifted his head up to kiss her cheek gently. "I can try, at least."

If she let him.

His gaze moved to follow Yuina's, falling upon the little prince of the forest.

He hummed, leaning his head against her shoulder.

"Sure do. That's Celebi— Lele's dance partner." He said, humming thoughtfully. "He's the prince of the forest. Uuuh... think he can travel through time? Ms. cait alfric used to be his avatar."

He thought he really should visit the woman and her family more often...

Qualified to treat all wounds... She wanted to believe he could, that he could take away the pain of the pitch black gouges that pierced through her very core... Even if he couldn't, she knew he would try, with every fibre of his being.[break]
The soft magenta glow of his hand gave way to a soothing relief that began to gently course through her, and it was strange feeling such a relief and yet feeling so tense, so addled. Both sensations, both feelings were so visceraly strong.[break][break]
Yuina asked a question she wasn't sure she wanted an answer to, she understood that the Pokemon had helped them in one of Hoenn's darkest hours, and she was happy to help it rest, heal, after expending so much of its energy... But she felt... well, she wasn't thrilled at what it had taken the time to show her.[break][break]
Doug's brief, but incredibly informative, explanation of what Celebi was, what Celebi could do...[break]
"So it's true...," Yuina muttered, her voice distant, haunted, she had hoped that that vision could have been anything else, anything... except, if it could travel through time... Then that was a future... It was her future...[break][break]
Yuina was stone still for a moment, more afraid in this single moment than she had ever been. Not just at the future that she now knew to be true, but... would if she told him... Would it change the way he saw her...?[break][break]
"It-it... it showed me my future," she breathed, barely a whisper. If she didn't say it out loud, would that make it any less true...?[break]
"I'm... I'm going to do something terrible...,"

He loved her; and after loving her for a while, he had come to understand a few of her quirks.

Her insistence on assuming the worse whenever she herself was concerned, was one of her more trouble some quirks.

"I dunno. Celebi's one of the nicer legendaries." He said simply, nuzzling against her. "I don't think he would've hung around ya, if he knew you were gonna do something... 'terrible'.

There wasn't a way for her to show him exactly what replayed itself in her thoughts day in and day out, constantly since they had gotten out... But he had to believe her this time, she needed him to... for when that future came to fruition.[break][break]
"Doug... please- I," how was she supposed to even begin to describe what Celebi showed her, where was she supposed to start? Her eyes flashed again, she could swear she already saw the blood on her arms.[break][break]

She's lost in that distant glaze of her eyes, fixated on some far away point that was anywhere but where she was right then... If she thought hard enough, willed it enough... Could she go anywhere else, where that future wasn't true...?[break][break]
The admittance of it, saying it out loud, it was just as painful as it was when she told him her truth for the first time... nothing about her time in Hoenn was easy, and it was only going to get worse... Maybe she was the vermin, he should have been rid of her well before it got to this point...[break][break]
He doesn't contest her though, doesn't try to dissuade her from how much she believed this to be true, not yet... instead he traces his fingers along her wrist, he knows by now that she needs the grounding in a mind space like this...[break][break]
Is that what she saw? She wished she could forget it all... She never wanted to see that vision again, but it was forever burned into her consciousness, another paving stone of her own life that was forced unto her, but she never asked for.[break][break]
"I saw... I-," she struggles, eyes flicking again to the sleeping sprite in the windowsill.[break]
"The commissioner... standing beside me, looking at me...," her voice catches, she will never forget the woman's face, she's never even met her... And she certainly could never now.[break][break]
"She's terrified, looking at me, because we're both covered in blood... and a body...," her eyes shift, she's looking at the body where it would be to her in the vision, she almost expects the figure to be there on the floor of the apartment.[break]
"A body in a black gown... it looks like what that woman wore...," tears sting at her eyes, her hands tremble. Why did it have to show her this future at all?

He listened silently, his hand squeezing Yuina's as the weight of what she had witnessed became ever more clear in the way her body reacted to the memory.

His jaw set, gaze turning to Celebi. Why had it shown her such an image?

His grip grew more firm, before lifting the back of Yuina's hand to his lips, kissing it gently.

"Yuina." He said, looking her in the eye. "I don't think you're the sort of person to murder."

Murder— not kill. They were not the same thing.

"If it happens— if." He paused to emphasize. They were not puppets dancing to some predetermined past, present and future. "I'll still believe in ya."

Self-defense, protecting someone else, a harsh decision...?

The presence of Commissioner dahlia goode alone suggested the circumstances to be extenuating and unusual. The woman did not frequent the frontlines. Though it wouldn't be the first time she was kidnapped, either.

He put aside such thoughts; figuring things out wasn't a priority. Yuina was.

He hugged her, pulling them closer together.

"And I won't let 'em take ya, whatever damn future they think's coming."

Recalling the vision is just as intense as being shown the scene for the first time still on that ship... but Yuina has to stop, she's already relived it so many times over. She almost wants to cough, skin burning at the searing hot breath that consumes her, a dark blue crest...[break]
It isn't until Doug says her name that she blinks furiously, trying to climb out of the gripping hold it has on her.[break][break]
He tries to reassure her... And as always, she wants to believe him... Maybe she wasn't a murderer... But what if she had been before? She had already hurt someone, blood marred one of Daikenki's seamitars in a fury that she didn't know what part of her made it surface... And the thought terrified her.[break][break]
Doug hugged her closer into him, a form of his promise... He would never let her go, that may be the only certainty that she could hold onto any more. She shrunk into his frame, legs tucked in, one arm across his torso and her head buried into his chest. She would try to hold on for as long as he would try to not let them take her, but... How long would she have to cling to him in this fear?[break][break]
"... I'm so scared, Doug," her voice is distant, quiet, tired... So very tired...[break]
It wasn't enough that they spent a week being drugged, starved, and beaten, and had managed to get out. But now for every day that she attempted to put that behind her, she would make it one step closer to that future, like she was being punished for wanting to survive, for attempting to have this life at all...[break][break]
"It's like someone has set out an hour glass somewhere, but I don't know how long it has until it runs out... and I can't do anything to stop it or turn it back...," she breathed.[break]
"But I know its out there, and the sand is going to keep spilling through the glass... and I'll never know when that day is going to come...," she would have to wonder for every day going forward when she might be faced with that vision, splattered by blood, fear stricken eyes tearing right through her. It was daunting, knowing that she still had so little about her past, but knew more about her future now, and yet... It felt like someone else was setting out her life for her... One stepping stone at a time.[break][break]

Settled against him, Yuina's thoughts still held onto her like a vice. She was still trying to recover, still felt so weak after what they had been forced to endure. She spent so long feeling so empty, fueled by nothing but the toxic sublimity of their imprisonment... And she was reminded again of how much she missed him, how far away that mask pushed her from him...[break][break]
When he spoke, affirming in fact that time would run out, as opposed to dissuading the notion entirely... Yuina thought that she would break at hearing it to be true... But the way he said it, how simple it sounded, that time would run out, and that was all there was to it, there was almost... relief?[break][break]
She listened carefully, quietly, to the sound of his voice in his chest, his breathing, his heartbeat, and slowly began to calm. He was warm, and she felt comfortable and safe curled up beside him, wrapped in his embrace.[break]
He spoke of Desiree, Thomas, Eris, there were more names that she heard in her own thoughts, more of those who she did care about... And they would still be there. He would still be there...[break][break]
Yuina had been so fraught over everything leading up to this future she never asked for, a vision she never wanted to see, she hadn't stopped yet to consider what could come after... Doug spoke so plainly, so easily about how the day would come, and the day would pass... the smallest bit of weight left her chest.[break][break]
His hand stroking gently through her hair, the calm of his voice, the soft kiss at the top of her head, Yuina... slowly began to feel her eyes flutter a bit... She was so exhausted.[break][break]
"You're right...," he had to be, didn't he? That vision wasn't the end of days... And she would be hard pressed if it didn't cling to her every day with as much hold as the toxic chain... But... she could work past whatever that future would bring? With him...[break][break]
"You're always right about the intrusive thoughts...," she murmured, drawing in an even, calm breath.[break]
"I wish it didn't show me that future, I wish I didn't have to wonder... But it helps... knowing I won't have to wonder if you'll be in my future..."
