night fell.

[break][break] caden found the night comforting. it was one of the few times of the day that he didn't have to face the scrutinizing views of fellow rockets, or the hardened gaze of Lulu Flint or THEO BECKETT or anyone else who would've thought to judge him for his family's past mistakes. even though it had been several months since his brother's defection, his father's death... it was as if none of their crimes could be erased from his own mantle. every day when he looked in the mirror he had to face them.

[break][break] luckily enough, he had laid low for long enough for most of the criticisms to fade away. as long as he obeyed, as he listened to the annoying requests of marcus kotov and anyone else who commanded it, he could avoid the limelight.

[break][break] oh, but how caden hated it. he abhorred it. he wanted nothing to do with the shadows that clawed at his innards, threatening to poison him from the inside out.

[break][break] how he wanted to flee but knowing that he didn't have the courage to.

[break][break] caden crested the crater of SOOTOPOLIS CITY, finishing up the gruntwork task of solidifying it's barrier as dicatated by his superiors. there had no breach - not yet, something in his mind hissed - in security. he could go home, probably. but ugh, it was such a long trip from slateport to here.

[break][break] footsteps clattered down the limestone steps of the city's edge, glancing down at the expanse of grass that made up one of the city's inner gardens. it was tempting, he thought, to rest here.

[break][break] moonlight glimmered off the wildflowers, casting a beautiful shadow across his face.

Sootopolis is not just the well guarded city in a crater. Nor the Cave of Origin or the Tree of Life that had once rested there either. It's jayden cross and fern delaney's home. A place he desperately sought out the moment he could leave his apartment. For days he'd been too scared to leave his apartment, processing what felt like hundreds of deaths, each just as painful interspersed with one man. His heartrate was fast, his palms sweaty. He wanted to see Father Winter the 2nd again, but he was scared to endure more of his...tests? Trials? [break][break]

He wanted to see Jayden and Fern, make sure they were alright. Make sure they didn't hate him. That he wasn't secretly intruding. Yes, he'd known both for years, but things changed when people became couples. The anxiety had finally gotten so bad he'd trekked out to Sootopolis only to not find them. The day before it had been him being too scared to knock. Today no one was home. [break][break]

And he had no one else to talk to. Not like Fern. Not like Jayden. Even if Jayden wasn't as good at Fern when it came to this, he at least could understand when Mint needed a hug. And he really needed a hug too. He felt cold, clammy. Sootopolis was safe to wander and so he does, creeping upwards into the footholds and landings hidden amongst the rock. Maybe if he walked long enough he'd gather the nerve to go back home. The wildflowers are welcoming even if they bring memory of a past he'd rather forget. And yet, he still wanders into them and sits. There's no worry of crystalbloom plague. No worry of patrollers coming. No gentleman to hold his hands, whisper pretty nothings, and- [break][break]

Mint squeezes his eyes shut, nose filled with the smell of flowers as he forces the memory deep down and away from his mind's eye as it warped and shifted. His brain wandered back to Dionysus and inevitably to those cold, blue eyes. fern delaney had never looked at him like that and he desperately wanted to keep it that way. The dream pulled a strangled sob out of him as he curled on himself again, trying to keep the tears from escaping. [break][break]

caden maher's footsteps are not quiet and Mint perks up and turns towards them immediately, eyes wide and alert before relaxing when he sees it's not just some wild Skitty making their way through the gardens. He fakes a smile, something he's grown used to. He fusses with his hair, discretely wiping his eyes before greeting them. "Evening! Patrol change?" he asked.

[break][break] caden had always loved such things — whether they be expensive purchases, fine satin clothing, or awards that he could place on his mantle. though no longer of use, his own medical degree still hangs in a bronze frame in his room above his bed, a sordid reminder of everything that he had lost at the hands of his CIAN MAHER's betrayal.

[break][break] the last several months, however, had not been full of beautiful things. of wonderful things. no, in fact, almost each and every action of his had been filled with begrudging distaste, the beatings from THEO BECKETT and other rockets a constant reminder of everything he had lost — of everything that had been stolen from him.

[break][break] the only glimpses of his old life were with his flings, with desires so hedonistic that caden could not have hidden them if he had wanted. it was at the crux of his very being, to enjoy what was meant to be enjoyed.

[break][break] he had the likes of emerson whitlock and DAMIEN RUSSO to keep him from being swallowed by the sea of despair.

[break][break] but he had promised CIAN MAHER that he would try — and try he would, onxy-laden eyes glimpsing over the breathtaking moonflowers that littered over the sootopolis garden.

[break][break] as he wades through all the beauty (disgusting, ugly, falsehoods of a dream that he could never have), the last thing he is expecting is the tears of a tearful boy.

[break][break] a sobbing man.

[break][break] caden does not recognize him, because he does not care for anyone but himself, but he steps towards him anyway, drawn forth to him by that glimmering smile. he stands over him, pulling down his mask to reveal his face.

[break][break] "yeah," he says. "patrol change."

[break][break] "what is someone like you doing in a place like this?"

[break][break] he peers at mint frost properly then, curious.

[break][break] there is sometimes beauty in broken things, after all.

He'd sat down to oclose to the steps maybe? He'd cried too loud? Whatever the reason, he couldn't change the fact that Caden was with him now. "I-" his words caught on the start of a stammer and he closed his mouth to swallow hard before replying again. "I just. Like it out here. You know?" he said, lying with ease. "Good place to think, overlooks the city." he added. If he kept talking, he could sweep this conversation to the side. [break][break]

"I can see my friend's house from here." Not that they were home. "Besides, it's not that bad a place." Nestled within the cliffs that surrounded an ancient crater, the blooms around them shine bright as stars as they reflect moonlight from above. It gave Caden a small glows, and little shadows that show how sharp his face really was.

[break][break] but caden doesn't bother to wait. he lowers himself beside the other, close enough that their knees brush, without seemingly any regard for the other's personal space. then again, something tells caden that this man - this person - this beautiful boy. he would appreciate that. and caden appreciates beautiful things.

[break][break] "where's your friend's house?" he asks conversationally, glancing over the sweeping cliffs of sootopolis city. at this distance, they all look like bird nests nestled among trees. hidden, full of secrets that are ready to be explored.

Mint's body stuttered to answer, hesitating in his movement and catching on his answer. "OH- sure-" but they're already sitting next to him. He's frozen at how smooth the transition had been, unable to jump back when he gently knocks his knees against Mint's own. He felt warm, and hoped the moonlight wasn't strong enough to reveal his burning ears. [break][break]

They prod at his wrist gently, touch light to coax him into it. A detail that was very much appreciated. "Over..." he trailed off as he actually picked out fern delaney and jayden cross 's home from afar. The lights were off so it was a little hard, obviously but he eventually found the familiar roof of their building. "Over there." he said, eyes moving back to his companion. [break][break]

Again he's struck with how close they are and even in the low light, he can catch the moon glinting off his dark eyes and tumbled hair. The cliff side air after a shift of patrol having messed up some of the carefully coifed curls. Again, he's struck with the urge to run but he's just stuck frozen again, staring as he tried to think of what to say. Finally he goes with, "Mint by the way." A beat.

"T-That's my name. What's yours?"

[break][break] in reality, caden does not care. he does not care about this boy or his sadness that clings to him like wet paper, does not care about the reasons that led him to this moonlit field. but caden - if not anything - is an expert pupeteer. he's an expert in disguise, as the way all rockets ought to me.

[break][break] "what about your house?" his voice is soft, like silver threading through the dark, quiet and polished. "why are you here, instead of there?" the words carry a subtle weight, an echo of concern that is practiced but feels real enough to pass. in the cool night air, it lands like a question caden already knows the answer to.

[break][break] "mint," caden says, the syllable rolling in his mouth, as he enjoys it being there. "i like your name."

[break][break] "it's cute."

[break][break] "mine?" he hums, not missing a beat as he threads their hands together. "is that what matters?"

[break][break] "call me whatever you like."

[break][break] "we're rocket. our names, our existences, don't matter. we're just pawns in a game, aren't we?"

[break][break] this game - at least - is one that caden plays well. a weaving of false empathy, an illusion of warmth. he doesn’t care about the boy’s answer. but he does care about what it might reveal.

He feels his breath still, straining to listen to the man next to him. "I-..." he trails off, eyebrows furrowing as he felt a pulse of emotion thump through his chest. The question nearly untethers him, mind racing through the turbulent events of his adventure the other night. Dionysus' voice fresh and echoing in his mind as his praise and advice fade into the winds. [break][break]

"Oh- t..thank you." Something feels like he doesn't think that's his real name. And maybe he shouldn't be giving it. He'd been caught off guard is all. He clamps his mouth just, cutting off a small gasp as Caden' effortlessly takes his hand and they intertwine. He doesn't resist, slow to act and unsure if he even had it in him to say no. [break][break]

but there's something enticing about the warmth of a stranger's hand. It helps him focus, and blink away the itching in his eyes. They talk, and Mint doesn't have the patience for this. He doesn't have the mental fortitude to argue nuances in his loyalties to Rocket. "I don't...really care about that right now." he uttered, thumb grazing over his companion's hand. "You pick." [break][break]

"Or be quiet. You're more handsome that way."
