a woman with weathered hands yelps as she burns her hands as she handles the pastries for the day. the steamed buns are always too full as she barely seals them shut. a passing trainer hisses as the juice from the filling spurts out the seam and runs down his chin, dribbling as the woman hands off another napkin.[break][break]

not all ghosts wish to harm. [break][break]

one of the children in town warns that they're coming, legs pumping furiously as their bike glides down the road past purple-roofed houses and cobbled streets lined with violets and anemones. the old man, who tends to the flowers everyday at the tower, dodges just in the nick of time. even less of them mean to haunt. [break][break]

most, only want to watch a little longer. it isn't their fault that it makes the living think of what they have lost. [break][break]

a breeze passes them by as they walk to work, but there is no child with a patterned helmet. no old man whose nose is a little crooked from when he broke it at a construction job and no woman with pink nails and steamed buns. there are no violets here, but there are still anemones. they do not wilt or sway the same. they hear their name. a flicker of recognition, then a disquieting silence.[break][break]

they've always resented the insinuations made about that small, passed over town between route 10 and 12. there are ghosts everywhere that you look. not just here.[break][break]

and so, mourning does not suit them, a child that'd been born in the shadow called lavender death. [break][break]

the wound does not fester, but it does not close. seven years past, and they should think of more important things: what lies ahead in the agenda, what messages still needed responding to, what appointments needed to be arranged, what calls to be answered, what is lunch, what is dinner, what is and what is and what is.
