it's good to see that despite her six years in kalos, that lilycove city hasn't changed much at all. a city filled to the brim with resorts, and all the tourists that stay in them. it's a little slice of paradise, having stood the test of time despite the conflict in the region.

fortunately for emma, her return to hoenn had been quiet; the media had moved on from redeemed troublemakers like her, and she couldn't find the heart to host a renunion party without her mother. but she had eventually made her way into old circles, calling and texting and asking to catch up. there was a slight sense of urgency about it; there was a war coming, and now was the time to forge old connections.

in this sense, this felt a bit like a calm before storm.

and so shopping she went. seeking company, the first person she'd reached out to was annalise henderson. she was someone she'd kept in touch with over the years, their occasional meetings fun but all too short. she remembered anna with a cheery disposition, bright and sunny. but these days, annalise felt more like an icarus, once severely burned and now twice shy.

and while emma was vaguely aware of what had happened it wasn't her job to pry. but it is her responsibility she thinks, to help out a friend when she could.

she flips through the various racks of clothing, the new styles and trends of the season having just been hung up. after a few moments, she holds one up to the ranger; a shapeless neon green dress, lumpy and already starting to wrinkle on the hanger. her lips twist into a wry smile.

"anna...would you wear this?"

[break][break]emma shouldn't have come back. she shouldn't be here. she should — [break][break]she turns around at the sound of emma's question. annalise doesn't know trends anymore, but the smile on emma's face and the cut of the dress in her hand turn her into just a girl again. freed of the weight of the world, if for a moment. [break][break] "that?"[break][break] the dress looks like it's made of costume fabric from a distance, yet she comes closer to inspect it anyways. her face twists. [break][break]"that's horrible, em," she laughs out. they're both laughing, the thought of someone wearing this so obscene that they can't help but demean it, the poor thing. emma wiggles the dress in front of annalise as she comes closer, showing off its sins against humanity.

"to make everything else in the store look better maybe?"

because for the teenage girls that they are, there is nothing more amusing than to make fun of something, or someone, if they had committed some sort of transgression against them. perhaps that made emma worse person because she admits it so freely, to embrace being petty and trivial.

but in the very least, shitting on an ugly dress was a victimless crime.

she checks the tag before her face twists in disgust, and she flips the tag over to show the price. "500 pokedollars. now that's a crime." she says. even for a rich girl like her.

but it was a little funny, too.

"if i bought it and gifted it to you, would you keep it? it's rude not to accept a gift by the way."

"it does not belong here."[break][break] she can imagine it on some fast fashion shop, dressed up as a nicer-looking piece on the site itself. the dress in emma's hands is what gets delivered to your door after gambling on a sketchy shop and losing. bad materials, cheap-looking. definitely not worth —[break][break]"five hundred?" she gasps out too loudly, hand flying up to cover her mouth. it's too slow to muffle her shock, but quick enough to smother the embarrassed laugh that spills across her tongue. [break][break]emma all but forces her to look at it again with her question. she appraises it, pretends to weigh the cost of rudeness, then says:[break][break]"yeah, of course! it'll look great in the back of my closet. way, way in the back."[break][break]she never stipulated she had to wear it. metal clinks as she pulls something from the rack. a boxy pokemon-print shirt that has not fully committed to the unconventionally-low peplum that looks more like a bottom hem than anything meant to emphasize. [break][break]"but i'm gifting you this."[break][break]it's held up like a threat. [break][break]"you could show up to parties in this. the next hoenn trend is right here." her mouth splits into an amused smile, feeling like her old self.

the grin that graces emma's lips is all too satisfied, and she shakes it a little more in annalise's direction, teasing. she shrugs, "no point in a gift if you don't use it." she adds, and watches as annalise pulls out an equally ugly dress. boxy pokemon-print with ruffles reminiscent of a peacock. dramatic wasn't her vibe, much less tacky.

but emma still squints and stares at the dress for a moment, as if she really was considering having the two of them give each other an awful gift. she was not a girl who said or was told no very often. life is fleeting—why waste it on experiences not lived? but then she laughs, putting the ugly green dress back into its place. freedom was one thing, influence was another.

"fine...you win. we'd look hot. but i think we'd start something we'd regret." she admits, putting the neon green dress back onto its rack. they were mildly famous and there was no shortage of gossip in hoenn, prying eyes and an excess of cameras. as much as she was apathetic to public opinion, she wasn't looking for that type of limelight.

regardless, emma flips through the racks, lazy and uninspired. these clothes were already dated, styled in last season's trends. maybe she shopped too much—everything she saw was something she'd seen before. "bored." she sighs. she wraps an arm around annalise's shoulders, peering with mild interest at whatever was in annalise's hands.

"wanna get outta here?"
