It was crazy to think Annalise would suddenly not want to be around June anymore. But anxiety clouded her mind and altered her judgement. Rationality had long since left, as she sighed and pulled herself out of the ball proper.

Then, she stood up. The Hisuian poke ball whirred to life, and the Regieleki soon disappeared back into its ball. Her eyes suddenly struggled to see much at all, and she blindly reached down for her bag.

“Then give me a raise, or something– cause I only got about two things to my name otherwise,” June said. Pride and an ancient golem that had once been a prime defense mechanism for a threat to Hoenn. Besides that, she had… it hurt to consider. “I’m not taking your money.”

“I’ll do anything, or take almost anything else,” She sighed and shoved her hands into her pockets, “You’re also my friend, Annalise. But I have to do this. It’s my debt. My responsibility. Besides, you’ll barely be making a dent. Save it for something more important.”

She couldn’t drag Annalise down into the hole with her. A forward on a payment would sit heavy on her mind, and ranger would be missing that money for who knew how long. It’d get paid off after the several other, much larger ones. And Arceus forbid if she wanted interest.

[break][break]in the gloom, her eyes follow june as she fumbles around for her belongings. there's an insult in insinuating there are more important things for her to save for. [break][break]"there isn't anything more important, june."[break][break] what will she save for? a pretty dress? a house that will be destroyed in some uninsurable disaster? anything bought will taste bitter so long as her friend suffers. [break][break]"i'm not offering to help you because you're some kind of charity case — it's because i care. and because i want to. how i choose to spend my money is up to me."[break][break]her chest rises with a resigned inhale. “And spending it on me isn’t an option, sorry,” June replied. Annalise was right; it wasn’t up to her how the ranger spent her money. But in the same vein, some things were unobtainable with currency. A balancing act that ultimately worked in the delivery girl’s favor, and to the annoyance of her friend.

Yet her own frustration was coming to a head. It was time to go, even if the thought hurt and the walk home would take ages.

“Thank you, Annalise,” she said. Her own sigh followed on the trail of the ranger’s inhale. “Really. Again. I’ll be fine. Promise.”

A bold-faced lie. She wouldn’t be fine, not in the slightest. Her heart ached and brain ran with a million different thoughts. Considerations. Half-measures and concessions. The pressure had never felt so real before, and at the worst possible time as well.

“Goodnight.”

She finally left, and the door shut with a soft click. Annalise had helped her get this far, but she wouldn’t always be there to bail her out.

If only the moment hadn’t arrived so soon, and so massive.
