True to form, Raphael’s survival instincts kick in a beat too late. His eyes go a little wide and a little glassy, mind flying back over his words like an old-school film spooler, except the wheel’s gone hinky and the film strip’s thrashing everywhere.

But he can’t. He honestly can’t find it. He doesn’t know what made Mint upset. He fights down the urge to hold up his hands in a show of innocence, keeps them-- somewhat firmly-- at his sides.

“Yes, that’s it,” he says, figuring now is not the time for jokes or bravado. They need to hash this out if they’ve any chance of being… whatever it is they are. “I mean, I get-- fuck, let me explain-- let me explain--,” he interjects pointedly over Mint’s anguish cry, “--I get why you keep it a secret and I get why it’s a big deal for you. It ain’t a small thing, and that’s not what I’m sayin’. I'm not tryin' to make you feel small. But I don’t think-- I care about you, mitten. A lot.” He let his arms go wide, then. “I wouldn’t-- I don’t-- there’s no secret in the world that would change that. Is all I mean.”

He runs a hand through his hair again. "I thought you were about to tell me you were dyin', or something," he added, as sort of an afterthought.

He's upset and it only makes the whiplash into fury all the more easy. It wasn't like he'd felt bad for keeping secrets. It wasn't like he worried Raph might get too curious and get caught in a crossfire. It wasn't like his whole life was being good as being secretive. He moves to Raphael face pinched in snot nosed fury. “I could strangle you-” he hissed, unsure how it was possible his terrorist double life, his closet murderer could be ok. [break][break]

But then again, maybe he didn't know Raphael well at all either if this past week proved anything. But Raphael talks and Mint listened, because he always listened. His voice doesn't carry the same low rumble as he rushed to explain himself before Mint truly made good with that threat. He wouldn't. It was hyperbolic. He could never. He'd just told him something personal to keep him from leaving, he'd never lay a hand on him. [break][break]

But ultimately, Raphael is truly the kindest man he'd known. “Gods…” he whispered fury turning to resignation as he let out a soft sigh. “Raphael. You're the only person I've ever told.” It's huge. To him. He'd kept such a close watch on himself only for this to happen. “My injuries. My hectic work schedule…” it's why he streamed. Irregularities in his waking hours. [break][break]

“And I don't have bird cancer…”

Mint moves into his space and Raph has to fight down another chuckle, because goddamn is he cute when he’s mad.

He reaches out when he feels its safe and takes Mint’s clenched fists-- so small, but so strong-- into his own. Trailing his thumb over ridges of knuckles and popping veins, he slowly rubs them out until they’re pliant enough to twine his own fingers through.

“An’ you have no idea how happy that makes me,” he said, tugging Mint close if he’s amenable, voice gone quiet with a sort of reverence, “I ain’t taking that for granted.”

This close, he could see the small twitches and shifts in Mint’s facial wings, the way they flex and move as though they were living, breathing structures.

“T’be honest, that was just the worst thing I could think of.”
[break][break]
Raph struggles to get oxygen into his lungs, swallows around the lump in his throat. He splays his hands alongside the small of Mint’s back and slowly, ever so slowly, goes down to his knees, chin coming to rest against Mint’s abdomen.

“I don’t care much for party loyalties,” he says, looking up at Mint with big, dark eyes, “but I would be loyal to you.”

Mint takes Raphael's hands in his. He doesn't want to rebuff him. Not when Raphael pulls him closer after almost walking out. He'd kept his distance not wanting to push him out faster. He comes when Raph calls, feet moving at gentle urging. It's not rash or harsh action that resets him. Slow words and movements entrance him, pull him into Raphael's pace. He seems relieved and Mint feels that lingering guilt. He didn't mean to worry him. But he had. “I'm sorry.” He apologized once more as he watched in real time the most painful option work wonders for him. [break][break]

“It's not your worst thought, but it is the worst of me, some would say.” Good people weren't killers, after all. As guilty as he'd felt, it's a relief when Raph calms down too. His hands find their way to the back of his neck, one idly petting his hair. He watched Raphael press in close, drop down to hold him, lock him in place with his gaze. Mint held Raph's cheek looking into the most sincere eyes he'd ever met. Only moments ago, full of hurt and quickly swayed with Mint's vulnerability. He nearly stopped breathing because what is one to do when confronted with someone cared for you so deeply, it shone without meaning to? [break][break]

Raphael promised his silence and more with talk of loyalty. His words felt heavy, and the emotional depth behind them was something Mint was scared to unravel. Even if Raphael didn't bite. “I wouldn't put you in their sights.” He'd beg him not to get involved. He gently pushed back some of the hair on Raphael's forehead, wanting an excuse to touch him. “I want to protect you…I want to be loyal back.” His breath catches before he melts completely into Raphael. Before he says things he's scared to. But he wanted to soothe him. He wanted to make sure he knew he did care. Quite a lot. Enough to be driven sick with desperation beyond fear of loneliness or abandonment. At least, he thought so. He'd given up so much less to other men. This had to mean something.

What would he give, for Mint to learn this? To allow himself to take up space. To allow himself to make mistakes. To be able to trust.

Mint is warm beneath him. Raph slides his hands under the hem of Mint’s shirt, needing to feel the softness of his skin against the rough of his own palms. Soft, but strong, and taut, and pale as moonlight; beautiful and quick to bruise, like some particularly precious fruit.

“You don’t have to protect me.”
[break][break]
He says these things like a prayer, a mantra, an offering. A psalm, repeated. Though darkness closes, I am shielded by flame.

“I don’t want to be a weakness for you.”
[break][break]
His lips ghost across the fabric of Mint’s shirt, eyes fluttering closed for half a beat, breathing him in, subsumed in him.

“I want--,” --you. I want you-- “--to be a strength. I want us to be a strength.”

He flexes his fingers and lifts the hem of Mint’s shirt. Presses a soft kiss to the skin of his navel.

But he is. He is sorry. That Raphael could look at him in horror not because of the blessing of his god but because the harvesting of his own body bothered him. He hadn't wanted Raph to see because he'd ask questions. He hadn't anticipated him to be so upset. But it'd been building between them, this tension. “Okay…” he doesn't argue because he knew Raph meant what he said. [break][break]

“I want to…I worry too.” He said softly, his lover's affection slowly pulling the pink out to his cheeks. They faced terrible circumstances every season in Hoenn, he didn't want Raph near that. But he couldn't stop him. He knew even with protest Raph would win out anyway. Because he spoiled him. He let Raph get his way more often than he cared to admit. And with his hurt still fresh in the forefront of his memory, he wants to do anything to keep him from hurting again. [break][break]

He takes a soft, sharp breath at the kiss as Raphael's words worm into his mind. A strength. “Together?” He offered, letting Raph do as he pleased. “We could try…” he relented. “...I'd try for you.” He would do more than that. [break][break]

“I don't want to chase you away ever again.”

There was little Mint could do in error. Finding his blatant disregard for his own body, his own healing body, had made Raph angry; but so, too, had the knowledge that Mint was harvesting from himself all on his own.

Raph doesn’t want to infringe on his freedoms. First and foremost, he wants Mint to know he’s not an island. That, if he wants to draw his blood, there’s someone there to squeeze his hand to pump his pulse and make him cookies afterward.

Any questions come from a place of curiosity, not a place of judgment. To better know how he can help. To better know how he can be involved in Mint’s life.
[break][break]
He doesn’t want Mint to worry. He wants Mint to feel relief, knowing Raph is involved, knowing he isn’t alone.

Which meant he had to get stronger.
[break][break]
“Together.” It was as close to an admission he’d ever get, he felt.

Despite the significant circumstances, Raph can’t help the pride that worms through him, watching the color splay over Mint’s cheeks, down his neck. He hides his smile in the dip of Mint’s hipbone.

“I don’t want to go,” he said, words like a promise, thumbs tracing the soft flex of Mint’s abs as they moved beneath his skin. “I want to be here.” A pause, a press of his lips. “I want to see what your wings do when you’re happy.” He lets the growl in his voice emphasize the words. “I want you.”

Raphael echoes him in a way that assures him they will be alright. He looks down at him with the overwhelming urge to kiss him but instead is still under his hands. Raph hadn't allowed himself to touch himbsince he'd gotten his wings and to his credit, Mint hadn't felt fully comfortable with it either. But now he doesn't care. Now he indulges in the roughness of his fingers, and the heat of his palms that he'd missed. [break][break]

Mint's eyes closed as he focused on the gentle kissing on his stomach. Ironically, his wings fluttered briefly only to rest over his skin. The feathers blended into his hair, softened with care and relaxation. Raph's words are heady and his request is straightforward but it's phrased in a way that gives way to possibility. [break][break]

Vague as Mint was, sometimes what he's thinking showed plainly on his face, aided by the fluffing of tiny, vestigial wings. But he doesn't seem to notice, so quick to get used to the strange. He's too busy staring down Raphael, eyes big and hands cupping his face. He wanted him now. It didn't matter for how long in this instant. Something dangerous pulses through Mint as he tilted Raphael's head back. A desire that gripped him, answering the man before him without hesitation. [break][break]

Any instinct to rebuff the question is buried. Anybody else would've gotten something coy, dismissive. Because who could have Mint? He was tired of handing himself over and over and over. But this question is ideal, perfect for someone like him. A person that hid his true feelings in subtleties. A person that would hold his cards close to his chest if he could help it. [break][break]

He bent down to brush noses with Raphael as he considered his response. The possibility of something more hung unspoken, on the tip of his tongue. It flashes bright in his mind's eye before he kills the thought, afraid of being blinded. Even so, he still teases out the idea to linger on later.

“tonight? As long as you'll have me.”

It was important for Mint-- for them both, Raph was slowly beginning to realize-- to understand that Raph wasn’t here for a quick fuck. He hadn’t wanted Mint to get that idea, and, more importantly, he hadn’t wanted to hurt Mint, wanted to give him enough time for his body to grow-- however weirdly it was growing-- and heal.

But he’d also had a feeling that Mint wasn’t entirely comfortable in his new skin, and he’d had to rein himself in, regardless of how attractive he thought Mint always was.
[break][break]
He straightens his spine as Mint bends, and they’re nose to nose for a moment, for an hour, breath intermingling, hovering but not touching.
[break][break]
“Forever,” he says in answer, a quiet rumble and yet as loud as a thunderclap, as he seals their lips together and scoops Mint up with hands spread along the back of his thighs, to lift and turn and press him gently, yet firmly, back against the door to the outside world.

His ears ring with an answer. Something else to gently tease out and analyze and consider at a later time. Raphael kisses him and it leaves no space for rumination. The searing heat of it burns away all other thoughts as he closes his eyes and leans in, greedy, hungry. His anxieties and Raph's doubts of him are a million miles away. He slots easily against him, and Mint clings back. He holds on, arms around Raph's neck and one foot dangling as he hiked himself up with the other, ready to lock ankles. [break][break]

Only moments earlier Raph had stood here ready to leave. Now, he had Mint pinned against his front door. Mere minutes had passed since Mint begged him to stay, and now he was. [break][break]

“Raph…” the name is murmured against his lips as with quiet praise, over and over. The distance between them, temporary as it had been, had left him with a sort of withdrawal. He didn't realize how badly he wanted to taste him until it's so tantalizingly close. And didn't he deserve something more? Didn't Raph, after playing nurse for a week straight. He would allow himself to be desperate, to crave him. Raphael had just promised him forever, and wasn't part of it?

Raph squeezes the muscles of Mint’s thighs-- now he knows what they’re so strong, despite their delicate appearance-- and kisses him, breaking it only to follow the column of Mint’s neck, trail over his collarbones.

His hands span the small of Mint’s back. With deft, practiced fingers, he pulls down the waistband of Mint’s pajamas. Before Mint can lock his ankles, Raph hoists him, sinking down at the same time, so Mint’s legs are slung over his shoulders, back still pressed against the door, and Raph is on his knees in supplication.

Raphael maneuvers him with practice and Mint is left panting, shaking as his lover leaves familiar marks against his skin. He felt himself being undressed, vaguely aware and with no intention to stop it. He's allowed to catch his breath, to indulge in the sight of Raphael eager and under him. [break][break]

“Impatient, are we?” his voice is more growl than anything resembling words; he lets Mint know he gets the joke with a bite to the inner thigh, tongue rolling over the hastily forming bruise, before he stands, guiding Mint’s legs to wrap around his waist.

Teeth pull at Mint’s neck as Raph carries him into the dark of the bedroom.

“I know what I want.” He replied before letting out a small yelp when bitten. It'd only been last summer when Mint had just wanted Raphael to kiss him under the fireworks. Nothing more. [break][break]

Mint let out his next breath in a small hiss as Raphael dug his canine teeth into the side of his neck. [break][break]

“I don't- I don't think I felt that.” He teased in the darkness, goading on Raphael like always. “Try again. But this time like you mean it.” He said as he rested against the other man, acting placid as he took him to bed.
