Which Aqua had probably inferred, giving their diving experience. "Skrelp are their favourite companions. I keep a small colony of them to placate her; it's the only other Pokemon she'll let near, apart from the other Shadows."[break][break]

He was delighted at the idea that he might acquire a shadowed Skrelp some day, a companion truly worthy of his Eurydice.[break][break]

"I'm afraid I've stepped back from the science department in recent years." Much has changed since his promotion to underboss had drawn him along a different path. "You might ask Lulu Flint; as Head Scientist she'd probably know who you should ask. Tell her I sent you."[break][break]

He didn't want his sister to think this was just some kid wasting her time.

Names to go off of and people to meet. From what it sounded like, this Lulu Flint was going to be somebody who was their best bet into getting an in with the right people. "I'll contact her and see what she has to do. Thanks for the advice, sir." For some reason, Aqua hadn't considered that they wouldn't be huge fans of being used as an actual anchor. Dhelmise were still an enigma to them, but it was nice that Cilian knew more than enough to give a few pointers. The blue haired youth continued to keep an eye on the submerged Pokemon, doing their bets to imagine a school of Skrelp around them both. But it wasn't until that last part that Cilian had captured Aqua's interest. [break][break]

"Shadows?" They asked, looking back up at the Rocket underboss while their legs kicked back and forth inside of the pool. "You mean like Shadow Pokemon? I've heard that they used to be here years ago, before something or other happened. That's what some of the grunts say, anyway." [break][break]

"Used to be?" He shakes his head. "They still are. Eurydice is a shadow Pokémon. And if you're keen on the water, surely you've spotted Lugia in the bay?"[break][break]

His patron made no secret of her claim on Sootopolis' Bay; she lurked beneath it like some sea monster of legend most days, but sometimes came up to rest upon the surface like some giant evil duck.[break][break]

"Unless you mean the Shadow Machine." He sighs. "I'm afraid that is gone."[break][break]

Of course they had seen Lugia in the bay. It was impossible not to, and considering the state it was in, Aqua had ample reasons to be concerned about its health. Of course nobody was going to just be experimenting on the blasted thing, so there was a decent chance that the first needle getting close to it was getting obliterated. Not that they would let that inner thought out. Aqua looked down at the Dhelmise and furrowed their brows. Of course they were a shadow Pokémon! How could they have missed that detail? [break][break]

"The machine?" Aqua repeated Cillian’s words, looking back up to him while growing interested. "So they weren't a natural phenomenon then. At least some aren't. If I can ask, what happened to the machine, sir?" Their head canted down to the submerged Dhelmise, her little tendrils snaking around its aquatic tank. "I'm guessing you dealt with that sort of thing, right? Anything we could do to fix it?"

"Well. We don't know where all of them come from." He shrugs. "Only a few are from the machine, but... I don't know that I'd call any of them natural."

He knows what other people call them. Abominations.

Those people were closed-minded fools.
[break][break]

"I didn't create the machine nor the formula it used, but I was able to get in touch with the one who did. Even they couldn't fix it." There's a tinge of regret in his tone. The Machine had been a marvel of Rocket's science department. He was sad to see it defunct. "There are other ways, however, so the phenomenon won't die out."

"I see. I wonder who made it..." It wasn't that Aqua was going to say it was a shame that the Shadow Pokemon thing hadn't been entirely wiped off the map, though it was rather confusing that it it wasn't just the machine creating them. They thought some things over in their mind, leaning back where they sat down as the Squirtle and Tadbulb had grown courageous enough to scamper across the surface of the water. Just two first stage evolution enjoying the day in the sun. [break][break]

"Actually, was Lugia found as a Shadow Pokemon? Or did somebody make it that way?" Aqua leaned forward back towards Cilian, though quickly adding, "Not that a grunt deserves an answer to that, sir...I'm just curious is all. I've never really seen what one can do, besides Eurydice down there." Depending on the answer, they would consider whether or not that was supposed to be a bad thing. So far, they couldn't really tell. It did make them seem more intimidating, but they really couldn't see a downside so far. Not unless they were going to explode into a bloody, shadowy mess. [break][break]

Once the topic was done, Aqua looked back down at the Tadbulb that floated by their leg. The tadpole let out a cute little cry and crawled up to rest on the concrete by him while his owner wiped their forehead of sweat. One awkward silence later, Aqua realized that they would have to not seem like some terrified kid somehow. "A-Anyway, what do you do for fun, sir?" [break][break]

Though he knows the names of all involved in the Shadow Machine's creation, Cillian keeps silent out of respect. Anya didn't wish her name known to all of Rocket, Cadis was gone.[break][break]

He flicks his wrist to dismiss the backpedaling when Aqua questions Lugia's origins.[break][break]

"Asking questions guarantees no answer, so there's no harm in it." He could always refuse to answer. But on this subject, he is open. "When Rocket discovered Lugia under the Silver Spire," which had been a tower in Sootopolis, vanished and replaced by the now-petrified tree, "she was already a shadow Pokemon. There was a nest of Nihilego around her, and so we can assume them to be the culprits."[break][break]

She had confirmed as much to him, though the memories were a haze of pain and fury and fear.[break][break]

"You haven't truly seen what she can do, either," he says of Eurydice, amusement softening the ominous edge to his tone. "Would you like to?"[break][break]

When asked what he does for fun, Cillian hesitates. He doesn't usually discuss his personal life with grunts... but then, they don't usually ask, either.

"I enjoy uncovering and reviving fossils. And I read, a lot."

Interesting...So Lugia was found already Shadow-ized? Aqua found it a little strange, but what was Hoenn if not weird? They did find it rather alarming that such a legendary could be made into a Shadow by several Nhilego alone but what was Hoenn if not just strange little coincidences such as this? Although Aqua hadn't seen it in person, Lugia must have been incredible to witness firsthand like that. Maybe one day it would show itself while on a mission or something! Just another hope in the wonders of the world that Aqua had wanted to experience one day. At the offer to see what Eurydice could do, Aqua's nod became a windmill of excitement, bouncing up and down. "I would, if you've got the time. Always nice to see what I might be up against out in the world." [break][break]

Cilian's hobby took them by surprise. Out of everything, they never would have guessed that he would be into fossils and things! Reading, yeah, everybody liked to read. His favorite genre could be cheesy romance for single moms and they wouldn't have bat an eye. Everybody loved to read something after all! Aqua was partial to nature studies and horror books themselves. [break][break]

"I didn't think you'd hunt fossils. Did you ever find anything cool when out doing so? Is it for fun or do you have a private collection?" [break][break]

Cillian's laughter rumbles low in his throat. "You'd best hope you're never against me."

Knowing that Aqua was likely referring to Shadow Pokemon as a whole, there's no real threat as Cillian pulls his feet from the water and stands up, stretching.

A click of his tongue summons Eurydice to the poolside.
[break][break]
The underboss sends out another shadow, this one a Breloom. It poisons itself upon command, TOXIC drool sucked back into its mouth to activate the properties of its POISON HEAL.
[break][break]
Another soft click and a sharp gesture of Cillian's hand sees the Dhelmise launch an ANCHOR SHOT, great chains curling around the Breloom and pulling it closer. BRICK BREAK seems to hit harder than it should, and as Psellia retaliates with a THUNDER PUNCH, dark shadows DISABLE the move thanks to Eurydice's CURSED BODY.

"They are unique creatures, shadows." There's a pride in Cillian's voice, an unmistakable awe. "Possessed of abilities and moves not seen before, either in their species or altogether."

He recalls his Dhelmise to release Psellia from the trapping effect, scratching his fingers along the dome of her head in thanks for the demonstration.

"I have a private collection," he says of fossil-hunting, "and I assist others with theirs on the side, but that's not to say I don't enjoy it. I studied paleontology in university, and earned my degree before war broke out in Kanto." He speaks casually of the war. "You can find all sorts of things on a dig. Mega stones, fossils, discarded treasures..."

"Y-Yes, sir." The little comment by Cilian had instilled a fear that Aqua wasn't going to be shaking anytime soon. They made a mental note to not piss this man off anytime in the future. This little pool incident likely had knocked them down a bit in his eyes. Hopefully they wouldn't have to feel the wrath of Cilian for anything they may do in the future. "I'll remember that." [break][break]

His show, however, was far more memorable for Aqua than a little sneaky reminder not to get on his bad side. Eurydice came up from the bottom of the pool as Cilian tossed out another Pokemon and showed them firsthand of what they would be capable of. The two began a brief scrap with one another, with the Dhelmise getting some good licks on the Breloom. It was a rough little fight, based on the anchor's fight prowess in such. Aqua watched in quiet observation, while a soft smile came over their lips. Maybe it wasn't exactly natural, maybe it was, but something about them had just gripped them. That allure of the unknown, those shadow Pokemon. [break][break]

"Amazing..." they said, finding a new little interest in Eurydice after the demonstration had ceased. The grunt leaned forward forward, eyes scanning over the shadow Pokemon's form while it sat above the surface now. "Not just Eurydice, but if they're all just like what she just did...Do all of them have the same kind of power? Or is it different with each one? Do you have any others that I could watch?" So many questions swarmed Aqua's thoughts, and each one wanted to dig deeper and deeper. [break][break]

Speaking of digging, Cilian had went to school for paleontology. While the concept of getting to discover mega stones, artifacts and rocks had sounded interesting on paper, Aqua didn't really know about how much of it was just that. There couldn't have been a lot of that considering there wasn't a new headline every day of some revolutionary new discovery. The world was strange though, so maybe they just needed more people to go digging around. Something to consider, though Aqua likely wasn't going to be going around with a degree any time soon. [break][break]

"If I find any fossils in my travels, would you mind if I brought them to you? I figured that it was better than giving it to some random person and risking losing it...i-if that's alright with you, sir."

Genuine pride lights in the eyes of the underboss as Aqua expresses interest in his Shadow Pokémon. For a moment, Cillian looks less a frightening figure of destruction and more like a kid who's just been asked about their Favourite Thing.[break][break]

"Some share similar power," he explains, "but others are entirely unique. I've never met another like Eurydice, here... but she's from another world, besides."[break][break]

He'd stolen the Shadow anchor from his doppelganger.[break][break]

"I have the largest collection of Shadows, so far as I'm aware." There were other collectors, but none so prolific as he. "They're drawn to me. I could show you many of them, indeed, but there's none as magnificent as Lugia. She's," and he smirks, aware of what he's about to say, "a legend among her kind."

He palms a pokeball, but it's not Lugia who emerges. Instead, an Alolan Sandslash scores its long claws against the metal floor, making Cillian scrunch up his nose.

"Stop," he chides his Pokémon, before turning to Aqua. "Cailleach was my first. From the Laboratory, before it went out of commission."
[break][break]
And of fossils, he eagerly insists, "Oh, yes! I'm more than happy to restore any fossil brought my way. Assuming you're talking of restoration, of course."

The air between the both of them had changed in that instant. Aqua could tell that the menacing glare that Cilian had given off was lessened. Enough so that it felt like a genuine conversation. Maybe they were just imagining, but even if so, it was a nice change of pace. That smile of theirs seemed to widen as Aqua listened to him discuss something he was very clearly passionate about. It was good for a brief lesson on Shadow Pokémon as well, something they had wanted to study about. [break][break]

The Underboss went on and on about Shadow Pokémon and how he had amassed quite the collection out of them. Aqua had wondered about how common they could have been back before the machine had been broken beyond repair, though being a magnet for that kind of thing also helped. "Sounds like you have an affinity for them, sir." He reached for a Pokeball, and for a moment, the lowly grunt was eager to see if it would be his shadow laden matron, only to be greeted with something just as beautiful. [break][break]

"Callieach...She's beautiful." They observed the Sandslash brought out, especially with how different its plumage was. A hand went to reach to touch them but held back after the reminder that not everybody was as inviting as their team. Still, it was quite a show. "I love her quills! I haven't seen any with that color before. And those claws too. She looks like she could cut through an entire truck with these." [break][break]

Back onto fossils, Aqua snapped out of their little thoughts about the Sandslash and nodded to the other man. "Oh, of course! I don't want them to gather dust or anything in some billionaire's attic or anything. Might as well use the tech if we have it."

Even to Cailleach. The Sandslash growls threateningly when Aqua begins to reach for it, but Cillian's hand on her head flattens the fluffing quills of the ornery creature.[break][break]

"Best not," he advises politely. "She's the most vicious of the lot, and even I've not escaped unscathed."[break][break]

He lifts his shirt to display the claw marks along his ribs, now white with age.[break][break]

"The laboratory shadows are often particularly vicious, likely due to the process involved. Pokemon aren't stupid creatures, I'm sure you know," with a respectful nod toward Aqua's lot, and how well-treated they seemed to be, "and she isn't ignorant to the fact that I made her this way, in a sense."[break][break]

He'd watched as the doors hissed closed, as the shadows consumed what had once been a normal Sandslash. The process had been agonizing.[break][break]

"You know," Cillian says conspiratorially, a slow smile spreading across his lips, "I have been experimenting in my own time. Success rates are hard to replicate, but I'm getting better at it. Perhaps I could help you acquire a Shadow of your own. If you're interested."

The Sandslash didn't seem to be too thrilled about contact, if Cilian's nasty scars were anything to go off of. Aqua recalled their hand and kept some distance between them both. No use in picking up a few new scars if they could help it. "Sorry, girl. Won't happen again." Cilian's further words about the laboratory being particularly rough on Shadow Pokemon being something that did make sense. Forcing a Shadow upon a Pokemon likely would come with adverse effects, if not just a total berserk rampage. Pretty neat trick, all things considered. [break][break]

Then the offer came to help them create their own Shadow Pokemon came forward, likely provided that Aqua continue to make themselves useful to Rocket. It was an offer they couldn't refuse, eyes brimming with excitement. "Really? You'd do that for me?" Aqua asked. They composed themselves for a moment to keep from exploding on the spot, then nodded at the Underboss. "I'd be interested in that. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help with that. If it was possible, is there some kind of process for how you know what Pokemon can become a Shadow Pokemon? SHould I save it until I find an especially powerful one?" [break][break]
