"You're telling me there're people stuck? In there?"

Rex's eyes were wide as dinner plates as he pointed towards the woman's restroom at the end of the hall. Half-submerged vending machines, old reports, and wet floor signs floated aimlessly in the water as Rex began to shake. Not from fear, but from some other emotion. The bathroom itself was blockaded by a collapsed ceiling.

It was one he could barely place a finger on.

"Caleb, what do we do?" A Magikarp aimlessly flopped in the water by their feet. "This is really bad!"

He shook the older man by the shoulders. His expression was serious, in complete contrast with the utter nonsense that was about to come spilling out of his mouth.

"Neither of us are women!" He hissed at Caleb, before looking around. "We can't go into their restroom! That's disrespectful!"

"Who are you again?" was what Caleb wanted to ask, but he held his tongue. What would ollie morales say if he found out Caleb was being rude to potential Ranger candidates? They were about to go to war, they needed all the help they could get. Best case scenario, this guy turned out to be a skilled trainer eager to prove himself. Worst case scenario, he was an idiot.[break][break]
Worst case scenarios were happening a lot these days, much to Caleb's chagrin.[break][break]
"We can and will go in there," he corrected, prying Rex's hands off his shirt. "This is a rescue, not some idle intrusion of privacy."[break][break]
Without waiting for a response, he hurried down the hallway to the blocked restroom door. He could hear a few desperate whimpers coming from inside.[break][break]
"Please try to remain calm! I'm a Ranger and I'm here to help get you out of there."

How could a ranger break the rules so easily? What sort of cruel man was Caleb Harcourt to do such an abhorrent thing?

Oh well. If it was to save people, Rex supposed he could make an exception and not report Caleb to their superiors. It was a dire thing to break into the women's restroom—a sacred haven that refused entry to the vile construct known as the urinal.

"Don't worry, we've got this! We're professionals!" Rex shouted helpfully as a Togepi waddled up to Caleb's foot and nudged him. "Togepi!?!?"

'toge toge?' He looked up at Caleb with huge eyes, before turning to the blockaded door. Togepi waggled his fingers in a Metronome. 'pi!'

The door, along with all the rubble that blocked the way forward was blasted off its hinges, allowing access to the illusive women's restroom.

"Hell yeah!" Rex scooped up Togepi. "Nice work!"

A Togepi appeared out of nowhere, staring up at Caleb with its beady little eyes.[break][break]
Caleb blinked down at it, confused.[break][break]
It began to waggle its stubby fingers...[break][break]
"No, wait - !"[break][break]
The door exploded outwards, catching Caleb head-on and knocking him backwards. He fell flat on his back, the door landing directly on top of him. Nox hopped over, buzzing with concern.[break][break]
"The fuck - " Caleb coughed, wheezing as he heaved, hoping to prevent the door from further crushing his chest. A sharp pain in his side made him wonder, vaguely, if he'd just cracked a rib.[break][break]
"I was right there," he rounded on the Togepi's owner, furious. "Metronome can be ANYTHING." A minor explosion was probably one of the milder outcomes that could have taken place.[break][break]
Voices were shouting from within the now-accessible restroom. Caleb staggered over to the entrance, peering inside. Confirming the structural integrity of the building was still in tact above them, he entered.

Rex stared at Caleb like he was an utter tool.

"Nah, not with Togepi. He's insanely good at landing his Metronomes. It's because he's the strongest, Caleb. He can beat anything!" Rex nodded in pride as Togepi waggled his fingers again, demanding uppies from Caleb. Togepi's Super Luck ensured that his Metronomes were always flawless. "You just gotta believe!"

It was hard to believe Rex when smoke and dust was filling their lungs.

The door to the women's restroom creaked open, before falling off its hinges. Rex grinned and chuckled as he entered, clearly proud of he joined Caleb within.

"We're here to save you, up-up!" Rex waggled his fingers much like his Togepi, who used a Life Dew to restore the vitality of the trapped people. "Ta-daaaaaa~!"

The Pokemon knowledge part of being a Ranger wasn't Caleb's strong suit. He had no idea what Rex was talking about. Metronome was well known for its randomness. What did being lucky have to do with it?[break][break]
Some might consider Caleb's blatant disregard for the Togepi's adorable beckoning as cruelty, but he was just in a hurry. And his ribs hurt.[break][break]
LIFE DEW sparkled encouragingly as Caleb knelt before the two women clinging to one another by the sinks. He quickly surveyed them for injury, but found that they were relatively unharmed - thanks to the Togepi, whatever scrapes and bruises they'd sustained in the collapsing restroom had been mended.[break][break]
Okay fine, maybe Togepi was a pretty useful Pokemon.[break][break]
"Can you stand?" He asked the women, just to be sure. He held out his hand to them. "Follow us out of here, and we'll get you to safety."[break][break]
He glanced at Rex, eyebrow raised. Nox dashed in and out of stalls, checking for threats.

'toge toge!' Togepi waggled his fingers in annoyance as Caleb denied the small egg uppies. Such villainy from the other Harcourt was expected, but from this one? Shocking. Abhorrent. Vile. 'pi!'

Togepi waddled over to Rex and demanded uppies, which the young trainer gracefully obliged.

"Y'all are gonna be fine. Don't worry!" Rex beamed at them with remarkable warmth and compassion. No, not compassion, fervor. "Caleb and I will keep you all safe!"

Togepi began to waggle his hands, which to Caleb's chagrin, began to turn into a Metronome. A bright light filled the room as the Metronome manifested.

"Check this, Caleb!"

All in all, a successful mission. Only two people had needed saving, and the building wasn't sinking at a rapid pace like some of the other places he'd visited already on the island. Rex was...wow, was there a word in the English language capable of describing Rex? Caleb contemplated it as he ushered the women towards the door-free doorway.[break][break]
Maybe he shouldn't have looked back at Rex, because he regretted it instantly. The younger man was beaming like he was made of sunshine, and then, to Caleb's horror, motioned to his Togepi.[break][break]
In moments like this, a person can sometimes feel as if their life is flashing before their eyes. All of the decisions they've made, places they've gone, people they've had relationships with - it all plays out in one, fast-forwarded highlight (and lowlight) reel.[break][break]
That's how Caleb felt the moment he realized the Togepi was using another METRONOME.

They disappeared in a flash.

There were numerous scenarios that potentially could have happened. Togepi could have exploded, killing them all instantly. It could have used Hyper Beam, killing most of them instantly. It could have used Teatime, allowing Rex, Caleb, and the survivors to feast like kings on Galarian cuisine.

None of those things happened.

Instead, the light slowly faded, and they would find themselves on the top of Sea Mauville where rangers ran too and fro. Many rangers stopped and pointed at Rex and Caleb, gawking. Togepi fell asleep, his Teleport complete.

"Wow! That was easy! We did it, Caleb!" Rex looked at Caleb. "We make a pretty good team, huh?"

Caleb shut his eyes, bracing for the pain, hoping it would at least be a quick death.[break][break]
Nothing happened.[break][break]
He cracked one eye open. Then the other. He blinked at their surroundings, momentarily disoriented.[break][break]
The two women cheered happily - if weakly - and were soon approached by a medic, keen on examining them. Caleb stared, dumbfounded, at Rex and his Togepi.[break][break]
There were like, 900 known Pokemon moves. That was a .00111% chance of a TELEPORT manifesting from a METRONOME.[break][break]
"Arceus," Caleb breathed, thinking of the possibilities. "Can I borrow that Togepi?"
