"This sucks," June wiped the sweat from her brown and leaned on the crumbling wall. The hot sun beat down on them, and the stupid fucking Wingulls kept getting their feathers all over the floor. Screw their habitat-- they clearly didn't care about it. Especially since their feathers blended oh so perfectly in with their shit. If she made the mistake again, they'd be roasting on a spit before long.

This was her... he knew what day of working in Sea Mauville. It was close to overtime and that was about all she knew. Except today, she wasn't delivering shit too and from the scene. No, that'd be too good of a use of her abilities. Some people got tired and wanted a break, and she 'apparently' sat on her ass all day.

Thus, habitat preservation. Or something. It was lame as hell. Even worse was the occasional sight of Knight, who got to keep making rounds with supplies. They gave him stuff, he dropped it off. Just without her. Never seen him as unstressed as before, which only made her even angrier.

"Annalise, c'mon, the birds can just, y'know, fly away," she turned to her companion. Her only solace in the endeavor and the main reason she hadn't left yet. Almost the main reason she even volunteered. "They'll find another place to call home. If they're smart, it'll be somewhere not named Hoenn. Don't you think there's better things for both of us to do?"

"Or... you think Wingull go for a lot on the market?" She gave the closest one a dangerous stare. It hopped away and gave her a nervous glance over its wing.

annalise is used to june complaining. tuning her out has become an art, parsing only what is necessary without all the chaff that would spoil her mood too. the wingull balanced on the makeshift table (read: a box of supplies) in front of her is emblematic of the fact that they can't all fly away. the ranger captain listens, but doesn't look at her, using tweezers to pick glass out from between the bird's feathers. June held up her hands in mock defense. Much like Annalise had mastered smart listening, the delivery girl had become a pro at smart retreat. Some matters deserved pressing, and others were traps—bait for pointless conflict. Ultimately, the life of the Wingull was not worth the ire of her friend.

“Yea, sure, make your difference one Wigull at a time,” June sighed as she continued her nerve-deadening sweeping, “but you don’t hire landscapers to do your taxes. Or something like– you know what I mean.”

It wasn’t the work being beneath her, it was the work not being her job. It sucked, it was tedious, and it was awful. That and it smelled like shit. Literally. What did they feed these fuckers?

“‘Sides. You’re the one doing ranger work. I’m doing janitor work. Speaking of, remind me to do something special for the Mauville Janitors. Didn’t realize how shitty it was to clean up, well, shit,” she said. They should be paid more. Like herself!

Maybe they should form a union over it.

Much like how the wayward Wingulls all stared at her. Their beady eyes pierced her soul and gave her the creeps. Despite the heat, a shiver went down her spine. Then, one hopped closer. Then another.

“Uh… Annalise?” She motioned to the birds with the end of her broom. One bold Wingull closed the distance between them and shoved itself into her face. Its beak mere centimeters away from her nose.

“Do you want something?”

"you can do what i'm doing if you want — it's not like i'm not holding you at gunpoint to sweep. it's just helpful for me if i don't have to do both."[break][break] june isn't a ranger, so she doesn't know how qualified she is to provide medical aid to wild pokemon. plus, the remaining wingull seem to be eyeing the delivery girl warily now after her market question. their current division of labor is probably for the best, even if june hates it. [break][break]the sound of her name being called draws her attention away from the wingull in front of her. she looks over her shoulder, blue eyes darting as she takes a cursory evaluation of the situation unfolding. [break][break]the wingull blinks its beady eyes at june's question, then stretches its neck out to try and clamp its beak over her nose.

Annalise was better off letting June sell the winged creatures on the black market. At least then someone might take pity and buy them just to provide proper medical care. Her idea of wound-tending was pouring on rubbing alcohol, taking a couple of headache pills, and going to bed.

There’s a reason she didn’t get her first Pokémon until the ripe age of fourteen.

But that wasn’t important. What was important was the beady-stare of the Wingull. June barely understood Annalise, too enraptured by the dismal stare of a dozen black dots. All of them were filled to the brim with murderous intent. She nervously giggled.

“Yea… maybe,” she held out a finger, “you’re nice, right? No hard feelings?”

After a brief, dreadful silence, the fucker craned forward and clamped its beak on her nose.

“OW, OW, LET GO,” June’s broom clattered to the ground as she desperately clawed at the Wingull. Yet the more she pulled, the worse the pain was. It had a vice grip on her nose, and had no intention to let go. Her feet back-pedaled into a nearby wall, where another Wingull perched ready to peck at her skull. “HELP ME, IT HURTS, OH FUCK–”

June reached for her side. A flare gun rose and pointed straight at the Wingull’s empty yet determined head. If the ranger wouldn’t help her, then she’d make fried birds for lunch.

june's screaming makes her leap to her feet, knocking her folding chair over and sending her injured wingull flapping away in surprise. annalise turns and sees her flailing, the flutter of vengeful, feathered wings, the flare gun brandished with the barrel pointing at the wingull's head. [break][break]"DON'TSHOOTIT!"[break][break]the words rush off her tongue as she bounds over, one hand clasping over june's to guide the muzzle of the gun toward the sky. her other hand pinches the sides of the wingull's beak, persuading it open around the delivery girl's nose. [break][break]it flies away as soon as they're separated — likely because it doesn't want to get shot at — but the other one requires a firm wave of annalise's hand to abandon the crown of june's head. [break][break]"oh ... " up close, she can see the damage the wingull did. slowly, she relinquishes her grip on june's hand, giving the wingull time to fly out of marksman's range. [break][break]"it got you kinda good. let's get some first aid on that."

Not a moment too soon. As soon as June’s barrel pointed remotely to the sky, she pulled the trigger. A loud POP filled the area and a flash blinded her. The flare soared high into the sky like a second son. All the bystander Wingulls flew off in a panic, leaving only the injured and aggressive ones.

But at least the worst of it was over. With the help of Annalise, June was freed from the clutch of the evil Wingulls. They did quite a number on her; her nose throbbed alongside her heart and blood rained down from her scalp. Angry tears welled in her eyes as the ranger led her to the med kit.

“Stupid fuckin’ Pokémon,” she cursed. Next time one of them got in range? On sight. No questions asked. Fuckers would regret messing with her. “Rattatas with wings…”

“How bad is it?” She sniffed. It felt like someone had stabbed her skull a dozen times, and the blood wouldn’t stop coming. Head wounds did that.

june's frustration is understandable. she's not a ranger, she doesn't have the experience of seemingly random wild pokemon attacks that would make it easier for her to brush off the insult of a few pecks. annalise's expression is pinched sympathetically as she ushers her over to the makeshift medical area. June took the cloth from Annalise and balled her other fist tight. Annalise was a terrible influence. Awful. Atrocious. She inadvertently made her do things she would never do otherwise. It’d been going on since the end of their adventures in the Power Plant. Life had gotten a lot harder.

Both seriously and for the small moments like this.

“I…” she trailed off. The rush of adrenaline started to fade, and her boiling blood cooled a few degrees. Enough for critical thinking. Stupid critical thinking. Hated it. Why couldn’t she just not?

“I deserved that didn’t I?”

She was becoming a more thoughtful person. And it fucking sucked.
