following her meeting with ameena, she’d gone home to prepare, delaying all appointments for the following day. that afternoon would be devoted to something long overdue.[break][break]

her sygna suit sparkled in the light of computer screens when she entered the station in area zero, where she'd arranged to meet her colleague. the getup of pale gold and rubies hung differently than her usual lab coat and office attire, eye-catching. a lunatone floated over her shoulder.[break][break]

”report on tera crystal phenomena.”[break][break]

”like a super hero,” someone finished in a whisper, ”or a wizard.”[break][break]

”please shut up. go on. i won’t be here long.”[break][break]

one of the scientists straightened then and reported dutifully, ”tera crystals continue to grow more abundantly in area zero, spreading and carving out tunnels at an extremely rapid pace. we’ve had many daily sightings of paradox pokemon materializing here. it’s concerning–”[break][break]

Area Zero held a lot of good memories for Ameena. She had met several Rocket colleagues here and grown more familiar with the anomalies surrounding Hoenn. She brought some of her strongest pokemon for the trip, knowing just how dangerous tera crystals were, but she walked with only her Musharna out. Moira brought her a level of comfort as the potential for danger created a seed of anxiety in Ameena's chest. [break][break]

She felt further calmed by the sight of Lulu, though the other scientist served as a reminder that Ameena needed to gather resources for a Sygna suit of her own. She caught only the tail end of the conversation Lulu held with the scientist. "I should have brought a bingo card for paradox pokemon. I wonder if we can spot all of them on this excursion." [break][break]

Musharna was less excited at the prospect, but Ameena knew the pokemon's potent sleep mist had gotten them both out of a few hairy situations with paradoxes before. "Where should we begin?"

lulu turned from the worried scientist and smiled. ”personally, i hope they don’t get in the way.”[break][break]

she bid the rest a quick goodbye before she approached ameena. “we find the biggest crystals we can, and hope for the door to open.”[break][break]

heading for the exit, she then pulled it open for ameena to usher her colleague back out into the steaming waterfall landscape outside. her lunatone floated out first.[break][break]

“one day, we will be able to open the door on our own – without having to bottle the mist.”[break][break]

A large crystal would stand out. She fell in line with Lulu as they walked through the area to find it. Ameena hummed thoughtfully at Lulu's assertion. "By channeling tera energy?" It could be possible. Since tera crystals were such condensed energy sources with unmapped potential, harnessing it could open the dreamscape. They seemed to have some sort of relationship with time-space distortions, so it wasn't too "out-there" for a scientific theory.[break][break]

Perhaps, infinity energy could also open the dream realm. Ameena had little experience with it. She rarely used mega evolution with Gardevoir given how odd she felt when the psychic's powers were expanded. Gardevoir's sadism and blood lust seemed to influence Ameena, and the scientist was no fan of being puppeted. [break][break]

They came around the bend to see a considerable tera crystal. "This should work." Musharna floated closer. It was hard to parse if the dream pokemon felt nervous or excited around tera crystals. Ameena had yet to imbue the pokemon with any, but empowering her psychic abilities was in Ameena's best interest. "I have yet to willfully enter the dream realm this way." She tried not to sound nervous. "The interdream zone tends to sneak up on me." Literally. She wondered if it had a mind of its own.

“absolutely, the tera crystals may work, if we can effectively harness them in that way.” experimenting more with the invasive space mineral had been on the long list of to-do’s, but it was not what she’d been referring to.[break][break]

”actually, i meant by befriending cresselia.”[break][break]

the moon goddess had been violent to them so far in space, but it had not stopped lulu from leaving out offerings for her, or hoping that she might come around to their side. with darkrai, however, she supposed it was unlikely.[break][break]

the situation required stronger encouragement.[break][break]

“it does have that tendency,” lulu said of the interdream zone. ”we’ll have to wait. but we have time for conversation, then.”[break][break]

she looked to the crescent rock hovering near her. “lunatone, go up. if you see the mist, let us know.”[break][break]

it levitated higher, growing slightly obscured in the steam as it ascended.[break][break][break]

Cresselia was a hell of a pitch. She knew Amor had left Nebula in howard slayte's hands, so he was the man to harass for space travel and related missions. At least, that team was the one she trusted with the task. "Last I heard, Cresselia was staying on the moon. Are you planning an excursion?" Space travel should have sounded more out-there, more crazy. But so should everything, really. [break][break]

She watched Lunatone rise. She considered confessing her latest sin, that of the sleep study, but she wasn't ready to voice it. At the very least, she needed to talk to Cillian before confiding in his sister; she owed him that much, for the invasion of his mind. Her Porygon knew to share the information with Lulu if she ever sought it - which she might, if Ameena died at the hands of any of the admins who'd been indoctrinated in the study - and Tempest already owned a copy of it. [break][break]

If nothing else, she hoped it would teach them something. She was still trying to repair the data. [break][break]

"I have never been in the company of a god." Ameena had little frame of reference for Avatarship or even for being in audience of a deity. "Do you think Cresselia would be a guide or a teacher?" To give away something so precious so freely... she didn't think it possible. She figured they would have to tear the secret to the dream realm from the god - a bloody, terrible affair.

“you must have heard about the last mission. it was very near the moon, at least. near enough that when she disappeared, we were able to land on the scraps she left us flying in. we almost didn’t make it.”[break][break]

she recalled the sheer terror of those moments, and of feeling responsible for the near-death of her friend oscar clayton. it had taken her nearly a year to prepare for her fifth ascent – but it called to her, as the farthest reaches of existence always would, begging to be seen and explored.[break][break]

the moon was too close, too familiar, but it was something. it was practice.[break][break]

lulu nodded, ”the date isn’t set yet, but i'm in the process of assembling the crew.”[break][break]

at ameena's next question, she smiled small, but it didn't reach her eyes. cresselia, a guide or a teacher? she'd hoped for as much, that the help would come rather easily once the goddess had been made aware what was happening on the ground.[break][break]

instead, it had seemed she had no concern for their waking world, content to stay some three hundred eighty thousand kilometers away.[break][break]

”i find cresselia as predictable as the weather in this region." she looked up through the crack in the sky and into the atmosphere, to mysteries unsolved. "it has seemed that the dream world is fractured, the liminal space between here and there leaking what it shouldn’t. yet, inexplicably, cresselia doesn’t seem to care. i assume she will offer us nothing, willingly.”[break][break]

lulu paused, feeling a pang of bitterness over dreams had through the gate of ivory. ambitions, expectations, desires crumbled by rejection. when her gaze fell to ameena again, there was something steely and ruthless gleaming in the amber, reminiscent of her brother, Cillian Quinn, and the cold spirit of conquest.[break][break]

”that being said, she will be both.”[break][break][break]

Lulu's recall of the last mission there reminded Ameena of the vital fact that gods were all dangerous. She couldn't forget that, as easy as it was to apply a docile nature to anything overseeing dreams. Cresselia had the capacity to be violent just as much as She had one to be sleepy or sedated. [break][break]

"Cresselia knows about the instability?" [break][break]

It shouldn't be surprising given that it's Her domain. Still, the apathy was hard to believe. She was stunned at the prospect that Cresselia didn't care about the fracturing of the dream realm. [break][break]

She gathered herself once Lulu shared her assertion. "We will take it by force," Ameena confirmed, "if we have to. There is too much on the line to lose this fight. As the world grows more unsteady, we need more avenues." To explore, to experiment, to escape.[break][break]

That was it, wasn't it? That she wanted a life boat. If she could not fully complete her research in this world, let her find another. She could not let this victory slip through her fingers. "If you have any combat data on Cresselia, it will be worth review. I have been strengthening my pokemon to prepare for the war; I will be ready to face Her down if... when, things turn ugly."

“i find it difficult to believe that she wouldn’t. i’ve tried and tried to get the message through – but i think it is simply that: she doesn’t care. unless, she is preoccupied.”[break][break]

by what, though, lulu was unsure. ”maldacena said he ‘pitied’ cresselia when we were in the cloud, but i have no idea why.”[break][break]

perhaps then, they would be rescuers too, even able to somehow prove at the end of it that a divine kidnapping had simply been best for everyone involved.[break][break]

about the battle data, she nodded, ”i’ll let Tempest Quinn know you’re interested in reviewing it. he was part of the crew, and it’s likely he will be again. some of the beasts are surprisingly interested in science.”[break][break]

she paused, before the question she’d been meaning to ask. ameena was ready for the face-off, but would she fight among the stars? few would.[break][break]

What did it mean to pity Cresselia? [break][break]

Could it be Cresselia was trapped between two realms? Her apathy could be a result of Her own position being stuck outside the dream realm, that She felt fractured Herself. Why else would one pity Cresselia? Could they know She had a bigger part to play? Ameena couldn't imagine. If everyone 'outside' - DRK and Megalopolan - thought their world was wrong, could Cresselia be related to that? [break][break]

Her mind spun with the possibilities. [break][break]

But standing around would not reveal any answers. She knew in her heart that her choice was made for her, here. "I am in," she answered. "I cannot miss such an opportunity. Whatever the cost, we will claim Her."

“good,” lulu smiled. “but with careful preparation, it will cost us nothing.”[break][break]

nothing but the fuel to get them there, but that was infinite and eternal. little did she know that before long, rocket’s special floette would be in the possession of Alba Evovae – yet another who would hear from her in time.[break][break]

as for cresselia, she looked up at her tall rose-haired colleague and said, “with her, we will find the doors we are looking for. they will open wide before us.”[break][break]

and as if on cue, nearby, the air began to blush with the faint tone of the interdream zone, a strange mist weaving itself into their reality.[break][break]

her lunatone descended, circling it to draw their attention.[break][break][break]

Maybe it was delusional, but her at-all-costs attitude and Lulu's confidence was a dangerous combination. Ameena was positive they could parse every mysterious detail of the interdream mist in the coming hours just through their will power. As it, and Lunatone, descended, she took a few centering breaths. "We get closer each time," she murmured. "What will we see now?" [break][break]

Then, in a brief tinge of panic, she realized she had to be careful about her thoughts. If this interdream mist played with her subconscious like Musharna's newfound z-move, she was going to get in trouble fast. It was nearly impossible not to think about him (Montgomery James ) and his smile, his swagger, his untouchability. He was a Leaguer, and consequently a temptation she couldn't indulge. She had her work cut out for her to entice him to her side of the aisle, but her efforts needed to be secret. At a time like this, with war looming, it was dangerous to demonstrate a lick of sympathy towards the enemy. [break][break]

She cleared her minds with an instant palette cleanser: Galar. [break][break]

The mist settled around them and Ameena sucked in a deep breath, letting it overwhelm her senses. "I tire of nightmares," she sighed as rivulets of blood poured their way from the misty unknown. For a moment, her potential to create was absent of her mind.

[attr="class","body"]closer to the doors? to the places beyond? there was somewhere or some time ameena abadi meant to escape to, surely, for escape was the only goal lulu could conceive of in prying past the gates of reality when it would be so much easier to simply accept the world.[break][break]

her lunatone’s calm mind washed through her, and she focused on white as empty as a sheet of paper, but vast. the snow of the crown tundra fell around them. with the snowflakes fell blood not of her mind’s making.[break][break]

perhaps it was nightmares ameena sought to escape from, but there in the mist, she refrained from prying, knowing well that it might only open pandora’s box.[break][break]

”don’t feed them. think of something else – nature. mountains. a lake. anything.” blood splashed her cheek, but went ignored. ”where in the world is your peace of mind? go there, and we’ll begin.”[break][break][break]

Serenity was a good launching pad for their search, but Ameena nearly scoffed at the prompting from her ally. Where could anyone feel peace these days? Where could anyone feel so much as safe now? [break][break]

But she took a deep breath and centered herself. She used to feel something when she spent time with Amor, but it was largely a curiosity towards the region of Hoenn and his mastery of its faults. She enjoyed being at Rocket HQ more than she could've ever predicted, the melting pot of criminals and researchers and politicians creating an environment flush with new perspectives. Her own laboratory made her feel good just as much as it felt like a spiked wall she kept running into of her own volition. [break][break]

On her exhale, she surrendered to where the feeling left her. [break][break]

They stood in the streets of Mauville in night time. But they were not standing in front of her company. They were under a streetlight, and in her hands was Montgomery James's hat. "This is as good a starting place as any," she insisted with as neutral a tone she could manage.[break][break]
