it's an unusually quiet night at the snake pit. the usual crowd of down-and-outers, criminals, and the occasional lost soul has thinned out, leaving only the flickering neon lights and the low hum of the fridge to fill the silence. absinthe stands behind the bar, wiping down a glass that doesn't really need cleaning, her mind elsewhere.[break][break]

the quiet is unnerving. she’s used to noise, to the chaos that distracts her from the darker corners of her mind. but tonight, it’s just her and the shadows, and the only way to drown out the silence is to fill it with something else.[break][break]

setting the glass down, absinthe moves to the corner of the bar where an old, battered piano sits, its keys yellowed with age and use. it’s been a long time since she’s touched it—too long, really—but her fingers still know the way. she sits down on the creaky stool, her hands hovering above the keys as she considers what to play.[break][break]

her fingers settle into the familiar chords of a melancholy tune, something soft and slow that echoes the emptiness of the bar. the music fills the room, bouncing off the walls and seeping into the cracks, filling the space with something more than just her own thoughts. it’s a simple melody, one she used to play in another life, when the world was different and she was a different person.

it was rarity to find the councilwoman far beyond the walls of her ivory tower. Between piles of work and long stretches of sleep, time had become elusive. Something more often lost than found.

But tonight had been hard.

Visions populated her thoughts, drowning out all attempts of concentration. Eventually, she'd given up. There was no other choice. The more she fought, the more they came, unstoppable in their descent onto her.

So she visited the snake pit for refuge - a bar that had been quietly recommended to her a few times before. [Break][break]

"The drinks are great," she'd been told.

But after several glasses and a long stout, the jury was still out on her opinion.

All she could definitively say was the drinks were strong. Strong enough to have her elbow propped onto the bar top, with her chin rested against the palm of her hand.

Her eyes were kept entangled onto a slender figure, lost to their own tale of melodies. Ever since she'd begun to play, Penelope had kept herself perched, watching with interest.

the melody ends just as quickly as it begins. a soft, final note hangs suspended in the air, lingering on the edge of potential: for a moment, it seems just as likely that she will continue to play as it is that she may stop. then, after a moment, the sound fades, and she rises to her feet to survey the bar.[break][break]

a woman's glass is empty. absinthe better fix that.[break][break]

the bartender, clad in black, masked from the tip of the nose down, drifts back behind the bar, and here, finally feels more in her element, more like a person. her piercing green eyes land squarely on the red-haired customer, and the glasses that she has set aside.[break][break]

absinthe inclines her head in question. "another?" she inquires, hand already lingering near the bar's tap.
