it was admittedly a bit surprising that anton continued to follow after her. almost as surprising as the apology had been. she wasn't really sure what he got out of doing so. but stopping to consider as much meant the potential of her own self and why she didn't mind.[break][break]
no thanks. it was enough that he was being contrite.[break][break]
she didn't mean to evaluate the fact that she didn't want to sit somewhere alone now, when she'd been totally okay with that upon her initial arrival at the coffee shop. somehow...it was ant's fault, she quickly decided.[break][break]
when he met her answer with judgment, though, calla scowled at him. "do you have a problem?" her tone had returned to its typical sharpness. "nothing is keeping you from leaving if seeing some duckletts is just so beneath you."[break][break]
it wasn't even about the duckletts. it was just a nice spot to sit down. damn.[break][break]
yet he didn't wander off. in fact, it felt like he was one in the same with the mightyena who trailed after him now. a hapless puppy.[break][break]
but of course he had to disturb the peace. that tiny glimpse calm? immediately shattered. "i never said this was a date!" she blurted, face washing with furious color all over again as she whirled toward him. some of the duckletts startled in the water, surprised by her outburst. calla folded her arms, chin tilting up haughtily. "i'd like to see you try and pull off an actually good date. besides, who says i'm into all that candlelight stuff?"[break][break]
she eyed him then, expression a hair snide. "why's it matter anyway? you hoping i'd ask? awww how sweet, i had no idea you felt that way, ant." as she spoke, her voice turned cloying and just a little bit obnoxiously petty.

Despite his bitching, which was required of him, it was a nice spot. Not that he was gonna say anything because then it really WOULD feel like a date. She wasn't even wrong though because he wasn't sure he could come up with a single date idea in his pea-brain that didn't feel bro-coded.

Even then, with so much defiance, he scoffed. "I could come up with plenty, just not with you." It just made him think about his apartment, his fake job, the state of his life. He was a fraud and not because he'd never been on an actual date that wasn't tacos at 2am on a work night.

"Fuck off, that's not it. You fucking know it. Thought you were getting all girly is all." His tone was juvenile, even his dumb ass knew it. Griping and groaning like a flustered boy. He shook his head, reconsidering even coming out her. Instead, still silent and grumbly, he took out a stale energy bar from his backpack and tossed it at duckletts.

Her brow rose—obvious in her skepticism. “Wow, am I supposed to be, like, soooo insulted by that?” Her face twisted up, “If you could come up with plenty, then you should have no problem giving an example.”[break][break]
She plopped down on a bench that faced the pond, and for a moment her mouth twisted smugly. “Someone sounds embarrassed. Hit too close to home?” Watching him sulk, she fell silent to some of her own lingering thoughts.[break][break]
Calla snorted and looked away, and she pulled her feet up on the bench so that she could rest her chin on her knees as she hugged her legs. She didn’t look at Ant as she spoke, concentrating hard on the duckletts. “I’m not that girly.” Not usually, though maybe it was nice sometimes. “…I was dating someone until recently, and a lot of our dates felt like that. Not all the time, he was really sweet. But his family was really rich. It was easy to feel like that was a gap I couldn’t cross. Even if he never actively did anything to make me feel like I was less than.”[break][break]
Why was she telling him all this? It was stupid, she had no reason to justify her earlier reaction. Or explain away her dating preferences. It was Ant so he’d probably just crack some stupid ass joke. “But when you grow up with next to nothing, it’s difficult to not expect that treatment.”[break][break]
And in the end, it hadn’t mattered anyway. Uriah could give all the reasons in the world, but the small paranoid part remained in the back of her mind—for all her work and grit, she was never going to be enough. Not for a family like his. Almost two years, wasted.[break][break]
She huffed, suddenly annoyed at herself for showing her hand. So she twisted it back into scolding. “You shouldn’t be feeding them that, it’s bad for their digestion.”
