In the distance, gulls cried against an endless expanse of blue, and waves crashed upon white sands. Eddie watched the admin depart out into the light of day, haloed by the late summer sun. Maybe it was just a trick of that midday light, like the way that asphalt would so often melt into a hazy mirage in towns and cities this time of year, but in that golden brilliance, Howard Slayte looked more human than the soldier could have ever imagined him, [break][break]

He could've stopped the guy, right then and there, but for once, Eddie was inclined to take the man at his word, [break][break]

“Nah, suppose not,” he grumbled, until he lobbed another steely glare at the admin's back, “But I got my eye on you, ya hear? Don't go makin' a mess a' things in our town.” [break][break]

Ours, because it was Eddie's now, and Navy's, and Tsubaki's, and it still belonged to those names on the memorial stone. Just as much as he owed it to the lost to fight tooth and nail against Admin Fox when next they met, Eddie somehow imagined he owed it to them to let Howard Slayte leave in peace when he still had his god to kill. Maybe it was just Eddie's imagination, or maybe that too was justice. Only time would tell, he supposed.
