Eddie had to clear his head. His hands hurt, his arm hurt, his heart hurt. He had to put some distance between himself and the smoldering Petalburg, if only for a day. [break][break]

A Kubfu toddled along ahead of him, with the first few fallen leaves of autumn crunching beneath his feet. A crisp breeze carried with it the scent of distant wood smoke, and the little bear tilted his head towards it, curiosity piqued, [break][break]

“Prob'ly a bonfire,” Eddie explained, an answer to an unspoken question. [break][break]

He was becoming far too familiar with the different smells of burning things. The man nodded at the cub, [break][break]

“Maybe we oughta roast some marshmallows when we get back home. How does that sound, Pat?” [break][break]

The little bear's eyes suddenly widened, sparkling, and he shook his head in excited affirmation. Eddie chuckled; he was too long in the tooth for fatherhood now, but he wondered vaguely if this was what it was like to have a son.

Yellow eyes glinted at them from the foliage beyond. A Treeko emerged, little grasping hands held out before it, and the creature eyed the pair with a mischievous glint in its eye. Time for a lesson in the field, [break][break]

“Keep yer guard up, Pat. No tellin' what this fella's gonna get up to.” [break][break]

The Kubfu already seemed keenly aware of that fact as he took up a fighting stance. Head down, shoulders squared, arms extended, Patroclus waited for the gecko to strike. The two leered each other like gunmen in a stand-off, each waiting for the other to make the first move. Eddie watched with curiosity; whose patience would win out? [break][break]

Maybe he should have seen it coming, but the soldier's face broke out into a wide grin as the Treeko made the unfortunate mistake of lunging forward with a NIGHT SLASH. It had left the Pokemon wide open as it swung its arms in a clawing arc, open enough for the cub to spot the gap in its wild, swinging grasp. The unmissable AERIAL ACE struck and sent the bear's foe tumbling, the crossroad killing foiled by the swallow's return, [break][break]

“Atta boy!” Eddie cheered as he tossed a Pokeball to the fallen Treeko for capture. He took a few steps forward and gave the cub a congratulatory pat on the head, “Just like we practiced!” [break][break]

The little bear beamed up at him with pride. They still had a ways to go, but their journey was already off to an excellent start.

The next contestant stepped up soon after, but were dispatched with even greater haste. Pat seemed primed to catch the Torchic's raised claw as it tried to SLASH away at him; the fierce swipe of a fist in the form of a BRICK BREAK was enough to knock it out, [break][break]

“Geeze, buddy; at this rate, I dunno if I'm gonna be able ta keep up with ya.” [break][break]

The Torchic was beamed away by the next Safari Ball, and the Kubfu smiled proudly. All of his training was really starting to pay off.

By the time a blur of purple lunged from a nearby stream, this manner of battle had become old hat for the Kubfu. This time, the cub assailed the muddy fish with a staggering flurry of blows, bodily beating down the wild Pokemon in a bout of CLOSE COMBAT. Eddie tossed another Safari Ball, though now his expression had shifted from pride to something closer to concern, [break][break]

“Maybe we oughta rest fer a little bit,” he offered cautiously, “You've been workin' yerself pretty hard. No harm in takin' a break.” [break][break]

Pat seemed reluctant as his trainer stopped and plopped down next to the rushing current of water, but after a few moments, the cub padded over, and found a spot alongside the man to sit.

And as the two sat, both idly watching the waters rush past their feet, Eddie found that they were joined by some new bit of company. A Numel was trundling its way over, and it dipped its head low to have a drink. [break][break]

The Kubfu noticed the wild Pokemon shortly after Eddie did; before Pat could scramble to his feet, Eddie clapped a large hand onto the cub's shoulder, [break][break]

“Hey, buddy, take it easy. They ain't harmin' no one.” [break][break]

Though now the Numel suddenly looked up at them, watching with dopey curiosity, and Eddie was struck by an idea. He dug into one of his pockets and produced a granola bar for the camel-like creature, [break][break]

“You hungry, little guy?” [break][break]

Apparently so, because after sniffing the air for a moment, their trundling turned into a rather deliberate trot over to Eddie's other side. They opened their mouth wide and devoured half of the granola bar in a single bite, [break][break]

“See?” Eddie said with a grin, fishing out his final Safari Ball, “Sometimes ya catch more flies with honey! Or, uh, somethin' like that.” [break][break]

He wasn't sure if the lesson had really landed with the cub, but Pat watched on with a new sense of curiosity as the Numel was blipped away, and Eddie couldn't help but think that maybe this encounter had left a lasting impression.
