on hindsight, noah found him when he delivered his neighbor's medicine from the hospital's pharmacy. it does make sense that he had a reason to be there.

he does seem healthy though.

noah had urged him to come with him in the doctor's office for his check up, though kyle declined at that time. he did ask to come with him to the hospital though. still, it felt like it was an invasion of privacy, regardless of who invited who.

they settled with kyle waiting at the lobby, before moving to the coffee shop by the first floor of the hospital after it took a while.

he looks up from his phone, which had been playing an old animated movie. he lifts his earphones off when noah returns from the doctor, taking a sip of iced coffee from a cup before speaking up.

it would've paired well with cake, but it doesn't seem like he has enough time for one.

"you don't look like you've been returning to the hospital," kyle bluntly puts out there.

noah swerves into his seat. on his wrist, there is no paper band. finally, between him sneaking out, anxious desire to return to his gym, and his robust recovery, the hospital had decided to discharge him.[break][break]

"check up went well." noah says as he flexes up. "can't keep the machampion down for too long! no way, baby."[break][break]

but he knows he must thank Eduardo Hisakawa soon, for without him, the gym leader may have remained in petalburg as compost.

the notion of a date gets him to stare at the flexed arm, but decency causes him to abruptly shift back to noah's face.

"you would think someone who got hospitalized would act, well, down."

he certainly looked down when they first met, but given everything he spewed out, it seemed understandable. the loss from what he got in return, a different entity that barely has substance to replace what was once was, didn't seem enough to bring his spirits back up.

kyle surmises desperation, or perhaps just optimism for scrambling for any crumb of hope.

"should i call you machampion too?" kyle asks as he looks at his cup. "that's a weird nickname, but we're going on a date later anyways, so..."

he extends his arm and offers his leftover coffee before recalling something.

"ah, can you take in caffeine? doctors usually don't allow stimulants when the person needs rest."

he quickly finishes his coffee down, almost choking as he gulps everything.

"y-yeah!" he answers fast, slurping the last of the iced coffee and brushing the back of his hand against the trickle from the corner of his lip.

the cup is begrudgingly left at the table after seeing everyone else do it.

"did they hit you hard on the head?" while framed as a joke, it sounded like genuine worry. "i'm not sure if i can forget about my phone."

not because it's an electronic that he plays games on, but because it's almost quintessential for every day use... or maybe he should just admit to being chronically online.

kyle follows noah to where he had his appointment.

"bro, there's no way they'd be able to do that much damage to me." noah says. "even the kanto rocket boss couldn't kill me! didn't even get a scar, man, and that would've been kickass."[break][break]

again, he slathers the honey of humor over genuine gravity. it is the only way he can survive. the only way he can keep his head up above the vacuuming void.[break][break]

noah grabs kyle's hand and leads him forcefully toward check-in once more. as their warmth joins together between their palms, the gym leader fights the intrusion of some whispered melancholy: that this whole affair is a delusion he marches with a naked smile.[break][break]

the gym leader is granted access. perhaps, it is thanks to the bewilderment of the staff witnessing what may have been a phantom of the past champion.[break][break]

when he finds his room, noah is quick to dismiss an incoming custodian. he opens the door and ushers kyle inside.[break][break]

"lemme know if you can find it! i got a clear case on it. some makuhita and machop stickers..."

apologetic smiles and humble nods were offered to the hospital staff that got passed by in their way of trespassing.

kyle is the type to go slow, contrasting the rush that noah displayed. contact between their hands was a product of being swept by the flow, invoking a rush of red on his expressions.

he doesn't expect it, but he supposed he should.

by the time they reach the room, kyle appears agitated. something that doesn't seem like a big deal to the gym leader gets him flustered. familiarity was one thing, but to take the reins was something else.

"y-you use stickers?" kyle finally speaks, joining the search. "that's cute."

unlike noah, kyle doesn't have much to say. he isn't versed on making conversation, and as much as he feels like he doesn't want to tank the date, he can't help that he's just going for a ride on noah's coattails.

"you faced the rocket boss?" kyle attempts in the midst of the search. "you must be, like, strong. those guns aren't just for show, huh?"

noah's bright bed of hair emerges from the other side of the hospital bed. he had been searching beneath the bed, for the phone was curiously not on the bedside table. [break][break]

he slaps his bicep as a reminder, but his eyes are distracted, ever searching.[break][break]

"i'm a seasoned gym leader... aaand i was a pretty good ring fighter." he smirks before opening a drawer to nothing. "taking me down's pretty much impossible."[break][break]

he shuts the drawer with a shake of his head.

the typical places to lose valuables are often the places that can be found by backtracking. though he doesn't know where noah might have placed them, kyle searches where a typical patient would.

"a ring fighter?" kyle echoes as he tries to look away from the flex. "like wrestling or mixed martial arts?"

he does seem like the type.

still, kyle couldn't imagine a jock having a relationship with a nerd interested in games and novels like him. it just seemed so cliche and the trope just felt like something a person who hasn't dated would fantasize.

"do you take lessons in your gym?"

kyle lifts the pillow on the hospital bed since it's where he often loses his phone every morning. he finds nothing.

imagination quickly gets dispersed as he instinctively follow noah inside. a hand holds the door open as he watches noah reunite with his phone.

"oi! i'll have you know they taught us basic self-defense at the force," he retorts. "i didn't pay much attention back then, but still."

he expects another show of confidence, playful arrogance that can only be described as a social medium to clear the air and keep it light. instead, he is met with a moment of stillness.

kyle tries to peek from behind noah, but decides to ask him instead.

"hey? are you okay?" he asks. "do you need a doctor?"

"huh?"

he couldn't read the intent behind. he expected something, but got another entirely different thing instead. the raised brow and an open jaw leaves little to hide his thought.

despite being the one who suggested it, kyle was the one left surprised.

"sh-should i call them now?" kyle asks, worried. "y-you're not a-actually sick, right?"

a hand is placed on kyle's own neck to gauge his temperature, and to be used as a reference when he leans forward to place the other on noah's forehead. he didn't feel sick, but the warmth is nice.

noah isn’t sick. not in the way kyle thinks. for months, noah had been waiting and holding onto the vaguest promise. it was no covenant of return, but a covenant of “things would be okay”, of “trust me” and “wait for me”. and now, when reunited like this, the gym leader struggles to grapple with a loneliness unfelt by the other due to its miserable depth.[break][break]

”i’m just joking, dude.” noah carefully retrieves the hand from his forehead. he brings it close to his warm cheek while his eyes, so heavy with memory, lock with the kyle’s. wordlessly, he plants a kiss on his hand. ”i’m just happy to be here with you.”

the kiss on his hand causes kyle to flinch, but not enough to withdraw it from noah entirely. instead, he flushes red.

words that he often dismisses as sweet nothings had better impact on him when devoid with exaggerated intensity. it was soft, sunny and warm, almost to a degree that he would consider pure.

conflict of reality and kyle's cynical and pragmatic perception makes it difficult for kyle to feel empathetic to something he does not understand, but he accepts it nonetheless.

"i-i'm not," kyle quips back. "it feels awkward being in a hospital room." he looks around. "in a hospital bathroom on top of that."

he turns back to noah, accidentally meeting his eyes. after hearing those words, he quickly pivots his sights to the door, trying to hide rose tinted cheeks from the other.

"sh-should we head out now that w-we have your phone? l-let's not linger too long!"
