"you get flustered so easily." noah smiles, and in those soft corners between lip and cheek sound the quietest notes of an elegy. [break][break]

kyle seems to have been reset. a rewound tape—but there had been no kindness in the act. no kindness to noah, that is.[break][break]

the gym leader senses the melancholia rising too high, and with a boisterous hoohah and laugh, he leaps and wraps his thick arm around kyle's head. noah noogies his dark hair. as blades of hair glide past his knuckles, the gym leader's roughhousing grants kyle closeness with his chest and the sound of his beating heart.[break][break]

"you're right! we should head out." noah says as he noogies him.[break][break]

noah can still feel the polaroid in his pocket, its shape so hot through the case of his phone. he remembers when the slateport apartment walls were adorned with the gallery of them. that very same apartment where kyle now dwelled, now worked: a detective unaware of his own missing persons case.[break][break]

after releasing kyle, he asks, "wanna head to your place?"

an arm around his neck invokes a sense of childishness that makes him yearn of the past that people deemed imaginary. he leans his head on noah's arm as thoughts fill his head, and the gesture of tapping out slowly devolving to soft caress.

like a roller coaster, ups and downs of their dynamic break the solemn moment right after he did the same to noah.

"my place?" he repeats in disbelief, hands falling to his side as noah frees him. "i thought we're going out since you asked for a date."

relationships weren't high on his priority. kyle never went on a proper date before, unless he should count experiences of being a third wheel or friend dates.

intricacies of what can count as one are defined by what was stereotypical in kyle's eyes. he imagined movies, or lunch dates or shopping. he mentally prepared himself to waste his free day on populated places.

he thought vanilla hanging out comes after they solidify the relationship better.

"well, sometimes a chill hangout is better than going to the club. just thought it'd fit the vibes for today, you get it man?"[break][break]

noah fibs to a degree. fibs the reason for the change of plans. the photo weighs heavy on the heart, and like a polaroid developing in reverse, the gym leader's spirit has dimmed to allow only one other's light.[break][break]

"'sides, we can kinda count the hospital as a date, right?" at the door, the long snake of a vacuum's tube clatters as it hits the floor. "guess we're getting kicked out... so, how about it? hang with me? watch a movie, maybe? take some pics?"

he supposed it makes sense. he did just get out from his check up and he can only imagine the amount of things the doctor would prohibit him from doing. they will take it easy today.

still, he sighs.

"the hospital definitely doesn't count as a date." he shakes his head. "dude, i can't have the first time someone asked me out be associated to where he almost died."

he looks outside the bathroom, and then motions for noah to get out. while it wasn't a conversation they can have in public, the bathroom was no place for any romance either.

at least, not in kyle's head.

"i-if you want my apartment, i g-guess we can." he forces himself to look back to noah, still red from the supposed advances and the romantic undertones he wasn't used to feeling. "i...i like it simple anyways."

when noah strides out of the bathroom, he wags his found phone at the environmental service worker. like a stick of burning sage, the device is a sign of no naughtiness, no foul play. just innocent hide-and-seek.[break][break]

"i like it simple too." noah says. "like the good ol' days."[break][break]

he catches himself. [break][break]

"i mean, like the days we're gonna have."[break][break]

the vacuum starts and the plastic nozzle scrapes across the linoleum flooring.[break][break]

"c'mon. before you crash from your caffeine." noah says. "maybe i'll make you a protein shake when we get there."

"do you want to help me with grocery first?" kyle asks. "i mean, if you're going to make me a shake, and we'll be hanging out at home where i don't have anything, and..."

as he listens to his words, he starts to realize how it sounded. like someone who gets someone else to do their work for him and multitasking on a time allotted to be spent with them.

noah's perspective might differ, but he still was an acquaintance in kyle's.

"b-but only if you have time!" he corrects himself. "you're, like, a gym leader right? that means you're always busy and stuff with definitely not dying in the front lines and, well, i guess what i'm saying is that..."

excuses comes after as always, trying to correct what had been carelessly said.

noah's words causes him to tense up once more, squeezing the hand that held his. the other one tries to cover his face, red from hearing things his ears weren't used to hearing.

"you can't say t-that!"

being forward hasn't always been his play. he was too used to working in the background, facing people where they meet in the middle and trying his best to navigate the conversation with the best possible speech options.

noah was different. there's no playing safe with him, and doing so just puts him in a worse spot.

"w-we can k-kiss later..." he whispers, flustered and embarrassed. he doesn't necessarily appear to hate being doted on, however.
