It had been so long since Persephone had taken on a League mission that they started sending her first reminders, and then eventually, threats that if she didn't do one in a timely manner her membership benefits would get cut.

It's not that she didn't want to do them - not strictly speaking. She took the concept of her civic duty very highly, it's just the ones that she'd be offered ( alerts on social media dependent on what area of the region the user was located in ), were typically beyond asinine. Locating lost skitties and the like.

She decided to remedy the issue in one fell swoop; take a simple Slateport-Mauville delivery assignment, arrive in Mauville and see if anything else came up so she could rack up the requisite "mission credits" or whatever.

In truth, she accepted this next one after a few shots at the hotel bar firstly because it sounded funny at the time, and secondly because she actually qualified by virtue of owning a Pokemon that can read auras and she was a sucker for that feeling of pseudo-exclusivity.

'Report of haunting in Mauville Hills Penthouse Suite 704 after gruesome killing late last year,' the screen read and Persephone could only grimace at the words.

She was meant to meet a "partner" here - a Mauville cop apparently assigned to be an escort, but they were 15 minutes late and Persephone was starting to wonder if she got played.

[attr="class","dibody4"]There is something relieving about being told what to do. Zeke Rainey appreciates not having to come up with the "why" and "when" of his assignments as they trickle down the latter to him, the new guy. For now, he is the work mule of the department in Mauville, his previous experience in Kanto not translating to seniority here in Hoenn.

He is the bitch of the force, not that he minds. The "cushier" (read: older, lazier, fatter) officers claim the city surveillance jobs so they can be paid a real cop's job to work as a mall cop. Hike up to Mauville Hills to investigate a haunting? Sure. The idea of escaping the monotony of the city hits a sweet spot in his soul, just like telling Zeke to go do their work for them hits his superiors' sweet spots.

The assignment comes to him just minutes before his departure; Officer Milner doesn't want to, something about being "easily spooked" before diving into another mug of coffee.

"Sorry I'm late. I was informed of this assignment like 10 minutes ago." he arrives in a huff, spotting the one person that could have been his partner. Though she looks vaguely miffed, he is relieved she stayed.

He offers a hand. "Zeke. So we're looking for ghosts, yeah?" that was all the information a quick moment to glance over the mission brief had afforded him -- surely she'll think he's an idiot.

Her mounting apprehension melted away the moment she saw the uniformed figure and was quickly replaced with a strange sense of relief. In truth, one of the few times a cop had ever made her feel more at ease. She stood up quickly to accept the handshake.

"A pleasure, I'm Persephone. And don't worry about it, I'm just glad you came and weren't scared off by the idea," she said with a small smile. "Ghosts, supposedly," she agreed, pondering it for a moment longer. "Could be that or just kids messing around in one of the abandoned blocks? Or just paranoid neighbours."

Abandoned because there was some messed up murder in there, admittedly. She didn't add that in because she assumed he knew already and making a point of it seemed somehow inappropriate. Some things are better left unsaid.

"Honestly, I'm not really sure where the place is, so lead the way. This city's layout is a bit confusing to me." As much could be said for Sootopolis, but at least there you can more or less see where to go, if not how to get there.

[attr="class","dibody4"]Persephone. The pretty name rattles around in his head for a moment before anything else. She immediately offers alternatives to suggest that there were no ghosts at all. The ghosts seem plausible to him, but riff raff finding their way up to the penthouse of Mauville Hills seems just as plausible. "Could be kids, paranoid neighbors, Rockets..." he lingers on the last word, realizing that his not knowing about Rockets in the city looks bad on his behalf. He is only human, though.

"Oh, yeah, we're not far." his feet move him in the direction he'd come from, knowing Persephone would follow. "I don't blame you for not knowing your way around. This city is...stupid. Why is everything inside?" he hasn't been here long enough to understand the appeal, but it's his job to know where to go within its walls. "I haven't been here that long, so I'm still getting used to things..." his deep voice rumbles as the two walk, constantly underneath the same, offensive electricity of the lights that lined the city's halls. He chuckles upon registering what impression he's likely made on Persephone. "I am not painting myself as helpful, am I?"

The indoor blocks sprawl kind of like a scaled-down real city. Being on the edge of the commercial district when they began, entering the residential takes no time at all. They are but a block away from Mauville Hills.

"The only thing I know about that case from a year ago," he hadn't even been in Hoenn, but it was significant enough to be brought up as water cooler talk at the station even now, "is that the woman was a pretty renowned trainer from Alola. When they found her, her body was unrecognizable." the words hit like a ton of bricks but his voice does not portray disturbance.

They stand at the base of the complex now; he reaches for the door and allows his counterpart to enter first.

The city felt like an oppressive and claustrophobic box. She didn't trust the long indoor halls, sterile even in places she assumed were meant to be residential quarters. Something between hospital and college dorm, artificial lighting cast and unnatural sheen on the polished marble floors.

She smiled at his comment questioning his own helpfulness, a small quirk of the lips and a quick but confident shake of her head. "To be perfectly honest with you, I'm incredibly unqualified for this and only got the assignment because I happen to have Pokemon suitable for the job," she admitted. It was meant to be somewhat encouraging, but maybe while establishing their mutual borderline incompetency did bring them together on some level, it was also probably did little to assure either of them of the success of the mission.

Curious, Persephone wanted to ask where he was transferred to Mauville from, but decided to hold her tongue for now. As personable as he was, that was probably still too personal a question. "At least we'll go in together and have each other's backs. I take it you're the bravest member of the Mauville Police Department?" she said, grimacing slightly. In the time she had earlier, she did try to look up the specific case for details, but all that seemed to have been published is just that an Alolan trainer died under strange circumstances and no further substantial material was provided - only vague fearmongering about the ferocity of the attack.

Stepping through the front door to the lobby, Persephone turned to her partner again as they made their way to the lifts to the upper floors. "I assume you were never able to identify what actually caused the death? I hope you have a key, by the way." It's not that they couldn't break down the door regardless, but that would probably still be considered property damage in the eyes of any court, even if its done in the presence of a police officer.

[attr="class","dibody4"]"I'm sure the League will be relieved to know they have such capable agents on the case." voice coy and lips curled, he mirrors persephone's body language subconsciously. it's been a while since he's teamed up with someone relatively age-appropriate and somewhat humorous -- he almost has to laugh when she asks about his standing as the bravest member of the M.P.D. "Bravest...dumbest...least lazy...whatever. It's all the same right?" a smirk plays across his otherwise stony visage as a look passes between the two of them, his own tone indicating a lack of worry in his qualification. The comment is meant to ease Persephone, whether or not it comes off that way.

"Key...right..." the image of his hand reaching for the envelope containing the key on Milner's desk reappears in his mind, now searching his pockets for a brief moment to relocate it. "Y'ever have to break down a door? It's fun." a nervous laugh surfaces, his hands frantically patting his own ass to feel for the keycard. "There it is. Looks like you won't have to."

The elevator doors open and the door is before them -- this is the penthouse after all. A foyer stands between them and the front door, occupied only by a shitty lamp on a rather useless end table of sorts and a fake plant in the corner. 704 is depicted in gold metallic numbers on the charcoal colored door.

The room of interest occupies a large portion of the floor, with several bedrooms and bathrooms making up the apartment unit. He readies the keycard for a swipe before looking at Persephone again, impishness flickering in his eyes. "Unless you really want to?" the legal ramifications of the action are not lost on him as he searches her eyes for an answer for a moment. He laughs and slides the key in and out quickly, unlocking the door and swinging it open.

"Kidding. Next time maybe."

Bravest, dumbest, least lazy, he was correct in that in this instance it all seemed fairly synonymous given what they were about to do; words that could describe either of them in equal measure, presumably. She grins back. A cop with a sense of humour.

As he searched for the key among all the pockets his uniform seemed to hide, Persephone watched on with a soft smile, her vague daydream of breaking down the door shattered prematurely. Probably for the best considering they might have to repay for a new door if they had broken it, and this deep mahogany wood grain looked far from cheap to replace.

"Can't tell you I'm not disappointed," she admitted with a grin before stepping into the gloom ahead.

The room, what looked like an entrance hall with a grand chandelier overhead, looked like it had definitely seen better days - dust coated the inexplicably still furnished surfaces, cobwebs hung overhead like limp silken flags. Listening closer, Persephone could swear that she could her the tick tock of a clock though there didn't seem to be one in sight at all.

"Looks empty and unoccupied, case closed," she joked weakly even as she walked to the center of the hall with a pace that could almost be described as cautious. Stopping, she pulled out a pokeball and released the lucario - while he couldn't help if it were indeed a ghost, at the least he should be able to sense its location within the maze of rooms.

Persephone turned to look back at Zeke, pausing to blink away dust before speaking again. "What's your professional assessment, Detective?"

[attr="class","dibody4"]A quick scan of the room they enter into offers him more input than he'd expected: its untouched state is eerie in itself, but confirms the fact that the source of the disturbance is likely accredited to something supernatural. Persephone summons her Lucario, its aura reading ability probably meant to somehow confirm a ghostly presence -- she's probably on the same page as he is. Nevertheless, she asks his opinion. A laugh escapes his lips as she closes the case. "Case closed? We can go now?"

"But uh, my professional opinion? Ghosts, probably. If I were some asshole kid I'd have wrecked the place. And if I were some asshole Rocket...I'd still probably have wrecked the place." he chuckles softly and picks up a Taillow figurine from an end table. His eyes track up to the chandelier that hangs above them, specks of dust interrupting his gaze as the float through the air, their rest disturbed by Zeke and Persephone's appearance. "Think your Lucario can get us close to a source if it is ghosts?" the taller man brushes past Persephone, voice clicking into something of a commanding (but not disrespectfully so) tone as he further searches the apartment.

A hallway stems from the main room and heads east, another heading west. Ahead, a balcony oversees a man-made courtyard in the middle of the complex. His feet carry him somewhat cautiously toward the hallway heading west, a hand running along the wall slowly as he goes. "I don't really know the case, but people, like, always die in bedrooms right?"

This man is an officer of the law basing his professional opinions on CSI: Lumiose episodes. He stops, suddenly bringing the sound of ticking to the forefront of his consciousness. "Is that a clock ticking?" would an operational clock still have battery power after all this time?

Persephone inclines her head in agreement at his assessment, flashing a quick grin; for what it was worth, yes the place was somewhat disturbed, but not in the way that suggested human involvement.

"Yeah, he can get a sense on hidden people, Pokemon, really strong old lingering feelings. That sort of thing," she said, taking one final glance around the grand hallway before turning to follow Zeke down the hallway automatically, carefully eyeing the crooked paintings lining the walls. "To be honest, I'm not really sure how it works, but it's decently accurate," she admitted idly.

Having the Pokemon's assistance in determining these things for so long made her realise that there was a certain amount of privilege attached to it; turning to the Lucario to ascertain motives was like second nature.

She heard the ticking too. "A possessed clock? That's novel," she ponders, hoping her smile and light tone do a passable job of masking the tension in her shoulders.

Wasn't there a Pokemon who did that sort of thing, hiding in objects?

It's not that she didn't like ghost types - she had a handful herself and found them quite charming. The thing setting them apart from some wild one causing havoc is that they were hers, and ghost types could be quite unsettling at best and downright dangerous at worst. It was just in their nature.

Turning to her side to look at her Pokemon, he didn't need to be directed to do what he came for; pausing in place, statuesque, eyes closed, and ears flat against his skull, while he tried to read the area around them. After several long moments, he snapped out of his reverie and jerked his head towards the second to last door down the corridor.

[attr="class","dibody4"]Persephone's voice fills the relative silence with her half-explanation of Lucario's ability. Her words do very little for Zeke, though he doesn't care to understand so long as it works.

He laughs a little, turning to shoot Persephone an amused glance at the thought of a haunted clock. The Lucario passes him, perhaps on the trail of the foreign aura or whatever. It looks possessed itself, but Persephone's lack of alarm during the ritual leads him to believe the Pokemon is simply activating its ability.

Zeke had guessed right, moving down this hallway, as Lucario stopped in front of one of the doors. "Looks like he's got something." he moves closer, catching up to the Lucario relatively quickly. The ticking of the clock gets louder with each step and begins to echo. By the time he is standing in front of the door, the ticking is constant. A hand tentatively reaches for the knob, turning it slowly and creaking the door open.

"What...the fuck?" he swings the door open all the way and takes a step forward. What he expected to be a bedroom turns out to be a study of sorts -- two bookcases filled with dusty tomes, a single chair, and a coffee table.

And more than 100 clocks.

Several grandfather clocks stand on the floor and swing their pendulums in perfect rhythm, while an uncountable amount of wall clocks hang and do the same. Their designs all differ, including some coocoo clocks, ancient looking clocks, modern clocks, even a clock that mimics a sundial.

"What am I looking at?" disbelief coats his words as his eyes scan the room before settling on Persephone.

He says what the fuck and Persephone opens her mouth to give an unduly profound explanation, but the moment she follows Zeke and her Pokemon into the room, the words no longer seem willingly to form. And even then nothing she could offer would really cover the sight before them.

"These are clocks, Officer Zeke," she offers an answer after a moment, her tone painfully humourless because she can't bring herself to joke.

She turns on her heel to helplessly look at the Lucario as if he could somehow give an answer for the both of them, but the Pokemon seems to barely notice, mesmerised by the clock faces, ears perked up to listen carefully. He turns back to them after several moments of stillness so quickly that Persephone flinches.

He raises a hand to his ear, and Persephone follows the direction - listening closely to the ticking. It is off; by a second or so, the ticking is unsynced between the clocks and almost distorted. Something electric and unnatural, foreign considering that the clocks looked dated and decidedly not high-tech.

"Can you hear it?" Persephone asks slowly, unsure as to why her voice drops to a whisper.

[attr="class","dibody4"]Persephone's remark comes in cold and painfully factual; it is so obvious that he has to chuckle. "I...gathered that." the words come out quietly. He is busy searching the back of her head as she looks at her Lucario, which seems to be intent on finding something in the room, something not visible. The two of them have seemingly bought into the supernatural lead of the case quiet whole-heartedly.

She passes him, and for a moment he feels like she is possessed. All he can do is stare at the white haired girl, unable to pick up on whatever it is she and Lucario are tracking. His foot steps, and the floor creaks. If the walls weren't covered in clocks, he might have questioned why the floor of an expensive penthouse suite was creaking at all.

Do you hear that?

He hesitates to answer, afraid that his negative response will dishearten her. Instead, he listens, this time meant to somehow be more focused and intent than all the time before just now, to the ticking of the clocks. Persephone's gaze clues him in to a certain clock. It's enough.

"It's...off." he, too, steps toward it. Not off as in not going, but off as in out of sync.

His hand searches his slacks while his eyes study the clock. Somehow, he knows which capsule will unleash the pokemon he requires, and a flash of light reveals Dharma, his Amoonguss. "I wonder...spore. On the clock." the command comes out as a whisper, matching Persephone's volume and tone. Dharma immediately tunes in to the mood of the room as she sprays a bluish dust from her mouth. It gracefully coats the top of the apparatus -- if a Pokemon is controlling it, the Spore may put it to sleep.

And, within a moment, the ticking stops. Zeke looks to Persephone, his eyes imploring her to share what should come next.

a thought is brought to its knees

like a mirror indiscernible
through the blossoms of gasoline
The bizarre mushroom Pokemon follows its trainer's orders and just like that, as though a switch has been flicked to off, the ticking stops. Persephone furrows her brow and cocks her head sideways in thought, leaning forward slightly to listen for ticking.

There is no reasonable explanation as to why the sleep-inducing attack should work on a piece of technology, but the fact that the ticking had audibly stopped from that particular source was undeniable.

After several heartbeats, Persephone looks to Zeke with abject helplessness, shoulder raised in a plaintive half-shrug. Maybe she got ahead of herself, giving him the impression that she knows more than she does or has some highly specialised unique knowledge about hauntings.

"Is it... asleep?" The suggestion is stupid and she knows it, she wants to swallow the words. Though on second thought, Zeke surely wouldn't have used the spore if he didn't think it would have some sort of effect. The notion gives Persephone pause, and she sheds her caution and levels alongside Zeke and his Pokemon to examine that particular clock closer.

"If something is inside, we can draw it out, right?" She knows of Pokemon like this; Pokemon like Porygon evolution chain that exist of of corporeal form and can occupy data and the like. Making a home inside furnishings is nothing unusual in isolation, only the scale of it - a room occupied by nothing but clocks? - was a concern. A bridge they'll cross if they get to it.

Gently, as though touching something so fragile it would otherwise shatter in her hands, Persephone reaches for the clock and unhooks it from the wall, placing it gingerly on the floor at their feet. It is no longer ticking, but nor is it quiet. It is, undoubtedly, slumbering, evident in the little ghost of snore it made at her touch.

Despite how archaic the clock looks, a shiver of electricity runs across the clock-face and Persephone pulls back sharply. Either the clock itself is a shell for what is inside or the being is occupying the clock's very fibers. Only one way to find out.

"Smash it," she tells her Lucario, and he obliges with a swift and powerful kick.

[attr="class","dibody4"]"I think...yes?" his eyes do not leave the clock to answer her question, but it gives him no reason to stare. Motionless it remains, taunting him to look away so that it can start once again. Zeke doesn't understand why the Spore worked, but he does not question it. The clock is a Pokemon...it must be.

Persephone takes a more direct approach. With little regard for the clock's well-being, the Lucario attacks it. Zeke does not look away, watching as glass shatters from the impact and crashes to the ground. It feels like too simple a solution.

His hands bolt to his ears as a blood-curdling scream rings out in the air. Its volume rises above that of the rest of the clocks and drowns out a scared moan from the Amoonguss before dying down as suddenly as it began. "Holy shit. Where is it? Dharma, calm it down with Sweet Scent!" with the ghost evicted from its home, perhaps it lingers in the atmosphere around them. The Sweet Scent is meant to relax it enough to show itself to the invaders -- unless it jumped to another clock.

"Can Lucario sense anything?"

Tick, tick, tick, the room goes once again, this time still working in perfect harmony like one massive timepiece. Zeke's eyes survey the room, quickly inspecting each one while sniffing up the relaxing aroma.

a thought is brought to its knees

With the one Pokemon exposed and expelled from its makeshift home, it all starts falling into place. The Rotom forced from its place, cries out an quiet just as quickly, surveying the duo and their Pokemon. Persephone attributes its sudden calm to the Amoonguss' Sweet Scent, and flashes the Pokemon a quick appreciative glance.

At Zeke's question, the archaeologist turns back to her Lucario but she doesn't have to to know the answer he would give. The Pokemon is generally laconic, even for the species. Indeed it is the first time he says anything to her since they entered the building, his voice scrapping against the back of her skull - deep, warm and oddly discordant.

'All around us,' the Lucario says, and Persephone can't help but flinch at the unpleasant sensation of his psychic communication catching in her head.

"They're in the clocks," Persephone says slowly, her eyes growing wide as the realisation sets in and her gaze turns to rows and rows of ominously ticking clocks. "There are, I don't know, tens of them, maybe hundreds. It's like one mass... a farm of Rotom. That's why he couldn't sense one individual presence."

She straightens to her full height carefully, as if sudden movements could somehow waken them all. "I don't think we can handle them all alone." The implication that a team should be sent is clear. Regardless, the goal is achieved and the pair, at the least, found the source of the 'haunting'.
