the distortion is a desiccation of time and space. an ever-spinning clock face, its glass cracked and scattered, hands severed and pointing in directions incomprehensible to the human mind.[break][break]

within the chaos, the black paneling and had witnessed in mossdeep manifests in mid-air. it unfolds: a black carpet for an unown-a and its white-haired trainer.[break][break]

despite the winds, her hat remains still and precise atop of her white hair. the thin, holey brim casts shadows that obscure stretches of her face.[break][break]

"sorry to intrude, but my heart is so full from the sight." the white-haired lady's voice is old, dusty in parts like the untouched cellophane of an inherited photo album. "it's clear to me that the jinxed loves you so very much."

"It's fine." He said, squeezing gently. "You're fine. Ya don't gotta justify any—"

The world— No, the universes themselves refuse to give them the moment, the privacy they need.

Even within what seemed like complete isolation— they found her.

"..." His arms squeezed Yuina gently, before slowly letting go as he turned to face the new voice, jaw set.

He fought to ignore the goosebumps spreading beneath his tailored uniform as the woman's voice scrapped against his senses.

It wasn't the first time he had seen her image, but it was the first time they had met in person.

And still she spoke as if he weren't there.

"... I resemble that remark." He said bluntly, standing between the woman and Yuina. "Is that what you people call me?"

He detested how it was both accurate and, admittedly, funny.

Amusing themselves with dumb monikers while planning to erase their universe from existence.

Pricks.

"My name is John Douglas Sullivan." He said. "Dr. Sullivan, to the likes of you."

Stood within his frame, wrapped within his arms in his embrace, Yuina tried to come to any kind of calm, to break the distortion, to do anything that meant some kind of control. But she just couldn't, not as the cacophony of voices still rang in her thoughts, not as she knew how uncontrollable she truly was.[break]
Doug tried to ease her, he squeezed her once, and she heard his voice, and still she felt like it had been ages since she'd heard him speak to her. She drew in a trembling breath, just wanting to let go, to let those threads go from her fingers... But she felt the disturbance before she even saw it. Something entered her domain.[break][break]
Doug squeezed her once more before slowly drawing away, and it felt like he was taking her very breath away with him. She couldn't breathe as she turned with him, and all at once her worst nightmare had been realized.[break][break]
Him, standing between her and that woman...[break][break]
Her voice was ice, paralyzing, cold... a voice that haunted Yuina's every nightmare and held its place in her every waking moment. And the way she regarded them... Their love... it brought an entirely new panic that settled in her heart... She had never loathed a single moment more than this.[break][break]
"What do you want with me," the only question she could manage, but not the one she wanted to ask... Who am I?

Just leave already.

Fingers curled and rolled as the woman drew nearer.

If she knew him as well as her words suggested— she'd know better than to come within arm's length.

Not when his beloved was so distressed at her mere presence.

"If you can't say anything yet, then please. Kindly leave." He said, frigid politeness that did not often characterize him taking hold. "Your visits are all too stressing."

There's a particular spike that Yuina felt when that woman regarded Doug directly, the way she spoke to him, casting him aside. As if it wasn't enough that she herself was perceived by this woman, she felt fury at the idea of him being perceived by her. She was her nightmare to bear, not his, and she hated the idea of anyone talking to him like that.[break][break]
Another spike, another twist of a seething fury that was burning within the darkness of her shadows when the woman said she wouldn't say anything, not yet. In spite of her fear, her nightmares, her dread at this one moment that she feared above all else, there was a white hot rage that was brimming through her shadows.[break]
She came in and out of Yuina's short life, always disrupting, always upending everything when she felt the slightest bit of comfort. It was always something cryptid, aloof, vague, never an answer or direct thought, as if she expected nothing less than for Yuina to be a compliant, complacent puppet and accept her uncertainties. Sit, wait, be good, be patient, stay alive...[break][break]
"No wait," Yuina spoke up in spite of herself, speaking past Doug as her anger began to take hold. She was forever trapped between dreading even the sight of the woman and needing to wring every word she could get out of her neck... It was a never ending circle to fall into.[break][break]
"Why all of this? Did you do this to me," she questioned then, her voice burned with a mixture of terror and rage. Why couldn't she have any answers? Why couldn't she have one single shred of knowing anything about what happened to her and why, and what any of it meant for her? She'd already spent a year drowning in darkness, in uncertainty... How much longer?[break][break]
"Was I lost because of you?"

again, the distortion howls. small shards dot the ground and waltz around the swaying grasses. she pauses. "let me ask you this too... your partner can answer as well, if he so desires. can one's fate be changed?"

He resisted the impulse to bristle, to mock gasp or make sarcastic jokes.

Here was someone planning to end all of (their) existence, claiming it all to be for the 'greater good' while smiling as if relishing on their demise.

Fuck her. Fuck all of them. They did not deserve even the minimum humor he afforded to rockets.

Yuina had questions, and fair enough for her to want answers.

He just wanted this woman to leave— one way or another.

Everything about her acting as if she knew them inside out was off putting and infuriating to him.

"...? No such thing as fate." He replied.

'Points in time, canon events'— whatever one called what Morningstar had run into; he just thought of it as 'meddling asshats'.

The more they learned of Arceus and the Triad, the more right seemed to have been. These 'gods' badly needed a stabbing.

For a brief moment Yuina chose to bite her tongue, eyes sharp and seething at how the woman continued to speak to Doug... In such a way that it sounded like she knew him... It was unsettling, unnerving, aggravating, but the situation was so precarious, they were both treading so so carefully... Even though she knew they both would take the chance to have a swing at her if the other wouldn't be put at risk. Yuina never wanted to have her seamitar in hand more...[break][break]
Again, no answers, nothing that could truly mean anything. It was impossible to tell if she was being dodgy to say she didn't actually know anything, or if she could divulge everything and was just choosing not to. Again, another why... another question... there were so many. Yuina had begun to hate the idea of questions.[break][break]
There was a moment that she caught herself though, the idea of being lost... She glanced to Doug who still stood firm between her and the woman, and even as much as she hated this moment there was still comfort in knowing that he was there... Like he promised... But just because she had been found by him, and he continued to see her for all that she was and wasn't, that didn't mean that she still didn't feel lost in everything that she didn't know, in everything that she had been forced to navigate.[break][break]
"How many lives do I have to lose, to say that I have been lost," she refuted. Were the two lives, that she knew of, not enough to consider her lost?[break][break]
Then she asked a burning question, one that made Yuina's voice catch in her throat. Doug had his firm opinions, he always did... She knew he didn't believe in fate, in a path, in things that happen because they were determined... And she wanted so much to believe that he was right, to know that his stance was true... But for every plateau that time achieved, for every fixed point that she felt at each turn of that proverbial hourglass... It was hard to think otherwise...[break][break]
"I will change my fate... somehow. I won't follow your path for me," she spoke in a resolve she wanted to build, in this life that she wanted to keep, with the person she felt she was supposed to find. If her fate was meant to take her away from him, she would fight it.

He didn't understand. Not really. Neither what she meant, nor why she'd bother.

Was he missing something, or was it just the woman's MO to be cryptic and inscrutable?

Whatever her intentions, whether it was good or bad advice— the attempt alone was offensive to him.

"Do you make it a habit of giving advice to people you plan to kill?" He finally scoffed, jaw clenching. "Will being 'happy' and 'fulfilled' matter when you end our world?"

Yuina seethed in considering the woman's words, that a fate was even above them, their power, and whatever may come was only a matter of time. But there was nothing to bring truth to her words, nothing to say that she knew this in absolutes, and yet... There seemed like Yuina had little choice but to believe her... This woman who could know so many things and bid her to keep going for an undisclosed purpose.[break][break]
But what purpose?[break][break]
There was a moment that she spoke to Doug again, veiled words, more cryptic meanings, Yuina's thoughts were tumultuous, swirling, why couldn't she just leave them alone? Why couldn't the universe just leave her alone and let her have this one life that she wanted to keep? But even as she burned over how many different times this life had been upheaved because of the woman's presence, Yuina's eyes narrowed. She was going to leave.... again.... leave her with nothing...[break][break]
"No-- NO! You can't leave me again," Yuina was furious, the distortion surged, as if in a will to still make things stop, to make it all stop, to stop her from leaving.[break]
"Tell me! Tell me what you want with me! Tell me who I am!" she cried out in time with the boundary of her own making began to crackle, break, moving around and past Doug. No matter how fervently she sought answers, how desperately she pined for just one single moment of clarity, she was only ever abandoned, just like every distortion that discarded her and yet called out to her all the same. She meant to catch the woman in her departure, but even in a space of her own making, as it wavered and began to shatter at her own broken will, she knew all the same that she would be left hollow, empty... drowning...

"Seems like everything's complex and nuanced when mass murder's involved." He said bluntly, eyes unmoved.

The triads were not the first nor would they be the last to claim their mass murdering plans nuanced and justified.

Finally, the woman was ready to leave. Yuina, however, was not ready to let her go. She stepped around him, as if to chase the woman.

The alarm bells inside his head were deafening.

"Holy— YUINA!" He was behind her in an instant, grabbing at her, his heart blasting against his chest.

The fear that she might disappear alongside the woman made him forget everything and anything else.

The unknown finished whatever it was doing, and the woman disappeared, leaving them in those frozen woods once again, alone.

With her departure, relief finally flooded into his system, a low sigh escaping his lips, even as he hugged Yuina more firmly, resting his forehead against her scalp.

That was too damned close.

There was a moment that Yuina desperately tried to pull against what was holding her back, what was keeping her from pursuing the woman, pursuing her truth... But as in everything about this life of hers, she was torn in two, never meant to be whole. Ahead of her were answers, a driving determination to seek them out and finally find clarity... But behind her, gripping her so fervently was her tie, her grounding to this life, to being Yuina...[break][break]
The woman disappeared as the final threads of the distortion snapped, ebbing back into the fray of the dimensional fabrics around them, and the silence, the white noise of no longer being surrounded by static and flickering time was stifling. Her chest ached, her mind was racing, and tears burned at the corners of her eyes, and as she was drawn into Doug's figure, shrouded by his frame, his head resting atop hers... She didn't feel relief.[break][break]
"--I," she tried to say something, anything, but her voice caught at first, giving in to the tension, the distress. Yuina's arms drew up and wrapped around his torso, pulling them closer together, even in spite of the duality that continued to tear into her. She was just so tired... exhausted from constantly being left in the dark.[break][break]
"I don't know what to do...," she breathed finally, words laced with every uncertainty that was crushing her.[break]
"I'm so confused... Every time it feels like I'm keeping my head above water, she pushes me back down and I'm drowning...," Yuina murmered, quiet misgivings. She stood back to look up at him though in the still, cold forest, for that moment just making sure he was still there...[break][break]
"I was so scared... I thought she was going to hurt you..."
