When he hears that someone is giving the grunts trouble beneath a crying sky, he thinks it must be Gwyar Wledig. His sensei is strong, frighteningly strong. Someone like him would knock down a legion of grunts. After giving his word to the others in Rocket’s command staff that he’ll handle the issue, Inoue Hitoshi sets off.[break]
It’s a short walk, a shorter ride. Their lines aren’t very far out. He expects to see one of the League’s best, one of its finest soldiers.[break]
What he sees instead is…[break]
“Oh mother fucker.” A hand presses to his forehead. Soft exasperation tints his words. This kid. This suicidal fool is throwing himself at their lines.[break]
“Alright, kid. One warning. Get the fuck outta here.” The warning, he knows, will be ignored. Inoue Hitoshi holds the simple red/white pokeball. There is nothing special about this ball, nothing to mark its contents as a horror.[break]
Before Rex can even respond to the warning, he throws the ball in a spiraling curve, ending with a raging monster. Its dead eyes behold Rex and his much-lauded Pokemon. It curls its rage fist and levels a punch at man and mon alike.

As the Rage Fist falls upon Rex and threatens to atomize Rex, time seems to crawl to a stop. Rex grinned, teeth bared into a wolfish grin as the attack fell towards him.

"WHAT'S UP? MISS ME!?" Rex roared as his Azumarill lunged forward, his adorable face twisted into a ferocious snarl as it caught the fist with their Huge Power. Leveraging their massive strength, the name-stripped aqua rabbit retaliated with a Play Rough.

Rex, meanwhile, was covered in blood and gore. A gash on his leg made him limp along, yet despite the heavy wounds he had taken from his battle with Tempest Quinn, Rex hardly felt encumbered.

Instead, he felt alive.

"I've been practicing!" Rex grinned at the Rocket Beast. "Can't you tell? This time is gonna be different!"

“Miss ya? Yeah, I miss ya. I miss ya like I’d miss a case of krabbies on my crotch.” This miscreant comes back again and again. He’s a thorough thorn in Rocket’s side, a wild card who knows no borders.[break]
But he has been training. He knows type advantages, if nothing else. Annihilape screams, writhing in terrible agony. It chuckles. The damage done to it was terrible, so, thus…[break]
The damage done back will be terrible.[break]
“Hit him again. Push this dumb fuckin’ idiot all the way back to Rustboro.[/b” And so it is done. The rage fist is empowered, thrown with magnum force.

He remembered this Annihilape. He remembered how it raged and screamed and cursed at the world for the mere curse of existing. Luckily, that meant that he knew how to deal with it. He'd let it rage until its heart gave out.

Then, when Hitoshi thought that he had the advantage, Rex would turn the tables.

The invigorated Rage Fist smashed into Azumarill, sending it crashing backwards over a mountain of corpses. Red stained a blue body in the paint of the slain, and the Azumarill groggily got to its feet. It was like being hit by a train.

An Aqua Ring surrounded Rex and his Pokémon, and he took a deep breath as life returned to his flesh.

"Rustboro?" Rex cocked his head in confusion. "Why would I give a damn about Rustboro?"

Realization quickly dawned, and the young man began to snicker. His snickering increased in volume until it resulted in a roaring howl. He shook his head and held up a bloodstained finger.

"Wait, do you think I actually care about this whole war? Like, at all? Do you think pushing me back to Rustboro will stop me from hounding you until I beat you? Until I win?"

Annihilape punches the ring of water surrounding Rex and his team to no avail. It rages, flailing, hunting for a target. Its part of this battle will soon be over. There’s something else Inoue Hitoshi needs to do. In his hand is a beast ball. There’s more where that came from.[break][break]
It’s a strange ball, just like he’s a strange man. Out comes the strangest creature in all the world – Kusanagi, who seems as strong as a blade of grass. Kusanagi and his brothers chitter, scream, daring this little psychopath to come at them. A crown of terastallized grass adorns its head, cutting across the ring, a lead blade to finish off the azure mouse.[break]
“Yare yare daze. Yer a menace, kid. Ain’t nobody gonna want anything to do with a psycho fuck like you!” Out flies his kartana, each one more vicious than the rest.

The insult caused Rex's teeth to bare slightly, his eyes flashing with the pleasure of this verbal spar. It's nothing compared to the clanging of swords or clashing of blades, but there's a cruel beauty to wordplay that whets the young man's appetite.

He's not alone. He thinks of keiko mori and her arms wrapped around his broken, bloody form.

"Whatever you say. Whatever you say." Rex watched as Kusanagi cleaved through the Aqua Ring with the ease of a hot knife cleaving through butter. His Azumarill rises to take the hit for his trainer, and he falls to his knees before Rex. There's a flicker of rage in Rex's face, but it's quickly overshadowed by the pride of the fight.

"That's a sharp sword. Well, bad news. Mine is sharper, and mine is going to cut yours in half." He produces the ratty Pokeball of a Gallade that had been with him since he was young. He throws the Pokeball with a fervent intensity reserved for an ace in the hole.

And, as he emerges, Gallade Mega Evolves.

The Kartana's strike is met with a Psycho Cut, and the clashing blades cause nearby trees to split and sever.

A bad guy. And bad guys don’t play fair.[break]
One night slash wouldn’t be so bad. A psycho cut wouldn’t be so bad. A guillotine’s bite would not be so terrible were you not locked into place. A sacred sword would strike true. A leaf blade, when augmented, might crush.[break]
Yes, this is an honorable battle. It would be the apex of honor, if Inoue Hitoshi did not order five more Kartana forward at once, a storm of swords falling upon Rex.[break]
“Get outta here. I ain’t gonna fight ya fair.”

A dozen cuts bite into his flesh and into his Gallade. Death by a thousand papercuts is a remarkably painful way to go. Yet muscle clenches and blood sprays, and Althus Rex remains standing. He was Littleroot's strongest trainer, and Hoenn's future champion.

After all, he's been caressed by victory over this long journey. If he can grasp for the searing heat of Victini's caress, then he can overcome this minor wall.

"I'm not gonna give up." Rex growled as he took another step forward, through the whirlwind of blades. "I will keep going. I'm not gonna give up."

He grinned through folded paper and sharpened steel, before his Gallade deflects the countless blades with Protect. Yet ultimately it's a look from his loyal knight that gives Rex pause. He gives him a look before turning to Hitoshi and grinning.

"You know I'd cross this sea of swords just to beat you, right?"

“Oh, yeah. I know ya would. You’d fight me all night if you had to.” He raises his sword down at the would-be champion. This boy conqueror will find no succor here.[break]
“And yer an idiot! While I’m holdin’ ya down here, the God General, Dak Barcode himself, is gonna be landin’ in Rustboro with Necrozma. Guess that’s just yer poor luck! You stuck here, that brawl goin’ down!” Accentuating his words are a maniacal villain’s laughter.[break]
Some of the grunts watching the battle look puzzled. His Kartana certainly chitter among themselves, speaking their own private conversation. Eventually, they shrug and continue to attack Rex. A few men venture to ask Hitoshi if he’s serious, but most look down, ready to see what Rex will say to that bold declaration.
