he letter nick sent to yuina felt heavy, and not only because of the thick paper. it's barely been a month since they met against the backdrop of the noble beasts, barely two weeks since his near fatal run-in with team rocket. with such vivid memories come intense emotions—mostly embarrassment, at his weakness and fear, but also gratitude, towards yuina, who he's come to see as a sharp and capable young woman.[break][break]

and now, he needs her again—or, at least, he believes he does. it's strange, wanting to become stronger, when his entire world for the past five years has been running from the violence of his past. becoming stronger, after all, often means being exposed to even more potential conflict and hardship in the end. but the bruises from his fight with BARNABY FINCH throb quietly under his clothes, reminding him of the stakes if he does not improve. he spent his entire past life trying to bring people back from death, trying to save them from the inevitable. perhaps it's time he learns how to prevent them from getting to the brink of death in the first place.[break][break]

the verdanturf township is buzzing with life behind him, the quiet murmur of voices indistinct but present. the sun begins to dip low over the trees, casting the road in a golden haze; soon, night will fall, and nick's nerves will be unable to stand much more waiting in the dark. it doesn't help that his ribs still ache from barnaby, and the bruises the man left still darken his skin in patches of violets and deep blues. but that isn't why he's here. he won't allow himself to wallow again.[break][break]

instead, nick schools his features into quiet composure, taking a deep breath as he searches the horizon for the ranger captain.

It was no question, Yuina knew that Nicholas was smart even in the short time they had spent together. She should have known that perhaps, if he felt the need to, that he could find her again to contact her. However, she regretted that it was through the ranger's organization...[break]
He had some false conceptions now that she was worth the accolades that her missions reports detailed, that she could help him in training, learning, growing stronger... There were many reasons she hadn't said outright that she was a ranger when he too had said the same thing. Not the least of which being, she had no right to wear the ranger's badge, but Ollie would never allow her to relinquish it.[break][break]
If she were to denounce her position as a league ranger, that would only bring more question, more concern, more attention than she already had watching her at every point. She was suffocating.[break]
But to accept that she was a ranger, and take on this request of his... And if something happened to him... She would be responsible, just like she was liable to ruin the lives of everyone she came into contact with.[break][break]
Yuina only hesitantly accepted the invitation, if just to see him again in person, and apologize for any confusion about who she was or what he thought she could do. She thought that might be best, so he could get proper help in such a dire time of survival within the region. She could at least point him in a better direction.[break][break]
He was there, in the near distance on the outskirts of Verdanturf town, and Yuina moved forward to catch his attention.[break]
"Nicholas, I'm sorry if I've kept you waiting."

if nothing else, nick appreciates yuina's punctuality. there were so many opportunities for her to not arrive at all—perhaps she had been delayed at work, or maybe she had chosen not to come at all. nick wouldn't have blamed her for that second one. despite what he had written in his letter, he doesn't feel comfortable asking her for help. he doesn't want to trouble her more than he already has, with all of his questions.[break][break]

yet here she is, stepping onto the path with the setting sun at her back and casting her shadow long onto the ground. it's interesting to watch—on one hand, seeing yuina in person feels like a reunion of sorts, nick's heart lifting with something akin to relief to see a familiar face. on the other, there is a pressing sensation in his chest that he recognizes from many other moments in his life: nervousness for what is to come, uncertainty for her reaction. maybe he has no right to ask yuina for her time, but there is nothing for it now.[break][break]

"it's alright," nick answers, shaking his head with a small smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. "i wasn't waiting long." he takes a deep breath then, rolling his shoulders back as he tries to stand just a little bit taller. despite everything, he knows that if he wants to change, he must be bold.[break][break]

his hand gently holds his side. "i almost died recently," he admits finally, meeting yuina's eyes. "i was really close. dumb luck is the only thing that saved me."[break][break]

he pauses to collect his thoughts and wits even despite the shaky quality of his breath, then continues. how odd it feels to plead for life after having accepted death as an inevitability.[break][break]

"i don't want that to happen again. that's why i wanted to meet you. i saw you were experienced and accomplished—if it's not too much to ask, i wanted to see if you would help me."

She neared, coming closer to Nick as she looked to meet his eye. But her uncertainties were clear in her features, fingers twisted together in front of her. For what he called upon her for, she did not exude confidence or experience in the slightest. She was nervous, and knew he deserved better than her...[break][break]
Yuina stood in front of him for that moment, where he at least placated her in that he hadn't been waiting on her long, but the way he stands up straighter, the way he draws in a steadying breath... she knew it well. It was exasperation, exhaustion, the weight of burden. What had burdened him so, that he had been brought to this state? Already she was concerned, the bleeding heart of someone who wanted to care about those around her so fervently, but still needed to keep everyone at arm's length. Safe... from her...[break][break]
And then he spoke, refusing to parse words, direct and forward about what it was that she was truly there for, and it was worse than she thought....[break][break]
"Nicholas...," she breathed first, empathy at least, she could understand how jostling the experience was, what thoughts come to mind at the first taste of death being so close.[break]
Though the pause came with recourse.[break][break]
"I'm sorry... I can't help you... But I will get you in contact with those that can," she admitted then, her own admittance, her own defeat.[break][break]
"There are a lot of experienced, trained individuals that can give you the right direction," she offered, a promise, that help was there and she would guide him, but she couldn't provide it.[break]
"I'm sorry for the confusion, and for wasting your time, but we'll get you sorted."

yuina's reply is a bitter pill to swallow, leaving nick with a sense of desolation that he cannot quite shake. of course he wants to believe her—nick has no reason not to trust that she truly wants to help him, in her own way. yet, her words leave him cold, as if a warmth has been stolen from within him.[break][break]

he doesn't want to see other trainers or rangers, not because he doubts their capability, but because he knows he can trust yuina. she has helped him understand a previously elusive phenomenon, and she possesses a remarkably level head. even with her distance and apprehension, nick feels as though he can relate to her on some deeper level. when she speaks, her sincerity resonates with him, and her understanding goes beyond the surface level.[break][break]

but perhaps nick is selfish, too attached to someone he hardly knows. perhaps he is simply too stubborn to let go, but the thought of going to someone else feels alienating and intimidating. and why does he trust her? is it simply because of the help she's already provided, or is it something else?[break][break]

he doesn't know the answers to those questions, but he knows he doesn't want to lose this opportunity to learn from her, to get stronger through her guidance. so instead of conceding to her promise of finding better help, nick shifts his shoulders, his gaze never leaving hers.[break][break]

"i know you're busy," he tells her honestly, his voice quiet but firm. "i don't want to waste your time."[break][break]

his fingers fidget slightly at his sides as he finds the words to better express himself. "but you've helped me before, and... i trust you," he admits, vulnerability bleeding into his voice. "please, help me become stronger. it doesn't have to be now—i understand if you can't. just... at least consider it."

He's hurt... and as his pain washes over his features, beyond the physical attrocities he might have beene faced with, Yuina ached. She didn't want to be a part of his pain, and it seemed now that either way she would be. If she wasn't the one to help him at his request, she would cause him strife. If she continued to be selfish in this life and build another bridge to another soul, she would cause him grief.[break][break]
"No, Nick, it's not that I--," she tried to say, nothing was a waste of time when she didn't know how much longer she had, everything was meaningful when she could wake up tomorrow in another life with another name. But she froze entirely as he continued... Trust... And it was her own fault that he did...[break][break]
"You shouldn't trust me... I've done nothing to earn it," she murmered, eyes cast down now, she couldn't dare meet his gaze.[break]
"I don't know who you think I am, but I'm not that person. Everything you could know about me is a lie... And you deserve more than that," she shook her head, and even as she spoke of lies, of being a lie, it was clear that this was a definitive truth. He shouldn't trust her, and the fact that he did, meant that she had already done more damage than she had ever considered.

Where Yuina expected, or maybe even hoped, that Nicholas would turn her away, regard her for her lies and know that she wasn't worth his time or his trust, she blinked at his initial response.[break][break]
'We're all full of lies...'[break][break]
It was the first time that she had ever considered such a thing, the first time anyone had said it out loud. That everyone has secrets, that everyone has things to hide... Like a child being told for the first time that a teacher exists outside of their school classroom, it was just something in her short life that Yuina had never been told and had never thought about...[break][break]
She herself had spent so long hiding, so long shrouded in her own lies and living such a hollow life, it had been impossible to think that her pain could be shared by someone else because of how painful it was. She wouldn't wish it upon anyone, and yet... as she blinked again and glanced up to Nick... In a way she could tell he was speaking from a place of knowing, of experience...[break][break]
This was only their second time meeting, interacting with each other, and yet all at once it was like Yuina had known him for a lifetime she hadn't yet lived. She felt seen, and heard as he didn't oppose her and try to change her mind under the guise of refusing to believe her. Nor did he press for questions, wondering what she could possibly mean. It was just... acceptance, nothing more, nothing less.[break][break]
"...I want to help you Nick... and I will...," she offered first, but again, a pause, not without recourse.[break][break]
"But you need to know that I could hurt you in the future. I don't know how, and I don't know when, but you should at least know that, before you choose to trust me," she returned, and this was a truth that she was openly giving him in return for all of the trust that he was willing to confide in her. He deserved that much.

yuina's words are like a salve on an open wound, nick absorbing them with a quiet intensity that speaks volumes about his need for connection. the corners of his eyes crinkle as he studies her face, as he takes in the earnest worry etched there, the anxiety of past and future mistakes. he recognizes these, too; nick has worn them both many times before.[break][break]

he understands her fear, the potential of what harm she could inflict upon him in the future. he knows too intimately the consequences of broken trust, of the pain that lingers long after the inflicting wound has closed. but he also knows that living in fear of the unknown will only strangle any chance of happiness, any chance of a future that isn't swallowed by dread.[break][break]

nick takes a deep breath, his gaze drifting towards the horizon as he grapples with his own thoughts, his own demons. the sky is a canvas of red and orange, burning bright like the embers of a fire, like a memory of passion long since snuffed out.[break][break]

but there, in the middle of it all, is a star. small, barely visible, but shining just the same. nick remembers when he looked up at the night sky and saw potential, saw hope. it's been a long time since those memories were anything more than echoes, but there's a warmth in his chest that tells him they could be again.[break][break]

"i'm aware of that risk, yuina," nick breathes finally, his eyes returning to her gaze with a softness in them that wasn't there before. "but... i'd like to trust you anyway."[break][break]

nick extends his hand towards her, palm upwards and open. it's an offering, a silent pledge of faith.[break][break]

"if you're willing to help me, i'd be honored to accept."

Once more, Yuina waited for Nicholas to take the opportunity for his leave, to turn from their interaction and know that he made a choice for his safety, present and future. There was something akin to relief maybe that she felt in the following moments though, after having spoken her truth. She was liable to hurt him, she was running out of time, running out of the path she was made to walk and had no way of knowing what would come when she would fall off the edge. And being upfront in telling him, making it known that she could be dangerous to him... She felt better about him knowing than continuing to try to lie to him.[break][break]
And once more, Nicholas accepted her words at face value and nothing more.[break][break]
For that moment, Yuina did lift her eyes to meet his, awash with confusion, relief, concern, hesitation, understanding, and everything in between. Her being honest with him didn't drive him away, nor did it pursue any questioning or pressure. There was just words said, trust exchanged. It was so... simple...[break][break]
"For your trust, I will help you. It's only fair, and I'll do my best," Yuina returned after a quiet moment, reaching out to take the offered gesture of his hand, the final seal of their mutual exchange.[break][break]
"We can start in the morning."[break]

True to her word, Yuina did return to the outskirts of Verdanturf town, away from the town center and out of the way off the beaten path. She might not have the most confidence in herself to provide Nick with the necessary knowledge to help him survive a next encounter, but she would not back out of their agreement now, not when he had provided her with something as invaluable as his trust.[break]
She waited in the morning light, a new day, a new start.

trust is a painful, fragile thing, and it can be rotten work. yuina said so herself—she could hurt him.[break][break]

but there can be no friendship without trust, and there can be no trust without pain. it is an inevitability of life. the people you trust the most will hurt you, whether on purpose or on accident, but that doesn't discount their bond, and it doesn't make trusting them any less worth it.[break][break]

this thought had been solidified in his mind overnight. it now powers his feet as he approaches the spot outside of verdanturf they had met at yesterday. the morning light is soft, filtering through the trees and casting long shadows that dance on the forest floor. the air is cool and crisp, filled with the gentle rustle of leaves and the distant cry of some unknown bird. it feels peaceful here, removed from the chaos of everyday life. nick would never trade this feeling for the world.[break][break]

the thought is a small comfort as he reaches the meeting point, but it's one he clings to all the same. he takes a deep breath, squaring his shoulders as he approaches yuina. his glasses—recently replaced after having been broken—glint in the morning light and, though he tries to conceal it, he moves jaggedly. no amount of painkillers can really fight the ache in his ribs nowadays.[break][break]

"good morning, yuina," nick greets softly, a tentative smile on his lips. "i appreciate you being willing to do this. i'm sure i didn't make it easy on you."

Through the quiet morning, amidst the rustling trees and gentle breezes, Yuina turned to find Nicholas moving towards her from the town beyond. And all over again she was reminded of how much trust they were putting in each other for this given exchange. It was heavy, palpable, and yet, at least for now, Yuina didn't feel a need to shy and hide away from it. Nicholas had freely, with the knowledge that she provided him, given her his trust. Without further question, without the pretense of knowing how she could come to hurt him. But it didn't feel like a burdensome weight... just... weight against her otherwise hollow life.[break][break]
"Up to this point, we haven't gotten to the difficult part yet," she admitted. This was going to be no easy feat, and nothing that could be done in one session, in one day. There were... so many things that Nick needed to know and be prepared for. Where was she even supposed to start?[break][break]

nick listens closely to yuina's words, his heart hammering an uneasy rhythm in his chest. every time he thinks he's come to grips with the danger of his position, something—or someone—presents him with a new variable. he can't help but wonder if he will ever truly be equipped for the life he has stumbled into.[break][break]

but nick is, as he has been told, a resilient person. his previous life may have been sheltered in a lot of ways, but the struggles he faced there prepared him for this constant uncertainty. he knows that even if yuina prepares him for every eventuality that she can conceive, there will always be something else lurking just beyond his reach. he has to be ready.[break][break]

"i understand," nick replies quietly, his gaze drifting to the forest floor as he processes everything. the ground beneath his feet is a quilt of leaves and pine needles, a tapestry woven by time and nature. it's beautiful in its own right, a reminder of the fragility and resilience of the world around him.[break][break]

nick takes a deep breath, steeling himself as he raises his eyes back to yuina's gaze. there's a flicker of determination within them, a fire he thought he had long since snuffed out.[break][break]

"i'm ready," he tells her, his voice more assured than it has been in a long while. "whatever you think i need to know, teach me. whatever you think i need to do, i'll do it. i want to be prepared."[break][break]

the wind rustles through the branches above them as they stand in silence, nick awaiting yuina's decision on where to begin, his heart pounding in anticipation of the trials to come. he doesn't know what will happen from here on out, but he is resolute in his purpose.[break][break]

he will learn. he will grow. he will protect.

At this point, Yuina knew there was little else she could do except just begin. She could lay out the ground work and create some bullet points, and from there they would just have to get started and keep moving on until Nick felt that he had covered as much as he could, as much as he dared.[break][break]
Yuina nodded, stepping towards a tree stump off to the side as she brought around her bag.[break]
"For as many tools and different phenomena I have encountered, I'll list them all, and we can start where you would like," she offered as she began to take object after object from her bag to lay out.[break][break]
"There are various phenomena that can be utilized to empower a Pokemon. Mega Evolution, Terastalization, Z-Crystals, and Dynamax," she began, laying out her own mega bracelet, tera orb, a z crystal, and dynamax band.[break]
"Mega Evolution shouldn't be encountered in the wild, it takes a bond, a link, between a human and their Pokemon to achieve the feat, and even then only certain species have been catalogued to achieve mega evolution."[break][break]
"Z moves are powerful, sometimes cataclysmic bursts of attack energy. It hasn't been recorded that a Pokemon can utilize a z move more than once before needing to rest from the exertion. Dynamax and Terastalization are spreading through the region and can be encountered both in the wild and by someone weilding the proper conditions for a Pokemon to undergo the transformations," she surmised, basic, rudimentary explanations of each, but a starting point.[break][break]
"Then there are the different anomalous species of Pokemon and otherwise that are in the region," she continued, taking out a Pokeball for each instance.[break]
"Shadow Pokemon, Pokemon afflicted by the Toxic Chain, Pokemon that have undergone the Illumina transformation. Then there are Ultra Beasts that hail from the rifts in Ultra Space, and Paradox species that have been brought here from tera crystals and interdream energy colliding," she offered, she had one Pokemon at least of each instance as she laid out their Pokeballs.[break][break]
"And finally, Sygna Suits are a technology that can emulate, almost, what it is to be an "Avatar" to a legendary Pokemon."
