The elevator trembled slightly as it rapidly descended, lights flashing intermittently as the man inside ruminated on his new assignment.

He was curious about this one. Very curious.

What made him different from the others?

As the elevator came to a stop and the doors slid open, the blonde stepped out into a long hall, the League HQ's inner facilities presumably ahead.

He turned his gaze down to the temporary ID card issued to him as part of Sapphire, briefly turning it around in his grip as he approached the door.

He hadn't made the cut for AQUA. Not exactly shocking— he wasn't an avatar —but that didn't stop him from wondering if his performance in Mossdeep and Sootopolis had been perhaps found lackluster.

Wasn't it?

The doors slid open.

He found himself staring at one of the not so often utilized AQUA Training Chambers— a large, if somewhat barren room, intended for combat training and experimentation with one's newly gained abilities.

His gaze slowly moved over the large room, before inevitably finding him.

The first avatar of the swords of justice. The man that had succeeded where Melody Miro, MATIAS SILPH and kyle lopez seemed to have fallen short.

Eduardo Hisakawa.

The blonde slapped on a smile, marching towards the man.

"Good day, Mr. Hisakawa!" He said as he drew near, holding out his hand towards him. "I am Gwyar Wledig, Gym Leader of Mossdeep. I've been assigned as one of your instructors."

"A pleasure to work with you."

It felt kinda weird being in Ever Grande these days. When Eddie had last shown up here, it was to tell some mushy stories to a little rabbit man sitting under a tree. Now he was here because he... kinda belonged? As a newly minted member of AQUA, and as a brand new avatar. Arceus above, the thought gave him goosebumps. [break][break]

Eddie looked anxiously around the wide, vacant training room as he awaited the arrival of his instructor, his mind full of questions about who the man to train him would be and what their work might entail. He was probably some strict CO, right? A real hardass that was going to run him through all kinds of combat scenarios, perhaps. Maybe he was going to have to do a hundred sit-ups and push-ups before they even got started – [break][break]

Distantly, an elevator dinged, and Eddie nearly jumped out of his skin. He was thankful that his momentary panic had been (mostly) kept under wraps as a blonde man with an almost disarming smile approached with a few strides and an offered handshake. Huh, maybe this guy wasn't the Full Metal Jacket-style drill instructor Eddie had originally feared him to be. The soldier smiled too, and took that extended hand gladly, [break][break]

“Good ta meet ya, bud!” [break][break]

Nerves dissolved into something more genuinely excited and boisterous, as it so often did for Eddie, [break][break]

“So, yer the guy who's gonna be puttin' me through the wringer today, huh?” [break][break]

The soldier laughed a little at that – it was silly to have been so nervous. Hadn't Hoenn already thrown him the worst that it could conjure up?

Bright smile. Strong, firm grip. Loud, boisterous laugh.

As first impressions went, the man had little in common with his predecessor. But— his personality did appear more in line with the proactive nature Terrakion had demonstrated in the past.

"Ahaha... I'm afraid I'm not much of a drill sergeant." The blonde lied as he breathed, his smile gentle and refreshing in a way that would've sent his past mentees running for the hills. "I've helped train others chosen by your patron and his brother in arms, in the past. That's probably why I was called."

His arm casually rested atop the hilt of his sword as he said this, the blonde's gaze slowly drawing away from Eduardo's gaze and down to his body.

He took a moment to step back and look Eddie over properly, smiling once again.

They'd not need to build a foundation from zero this time; there was more than enough to work with.

He raised his gaze back to the other man's eyes.

"Have you had time to try out your new abilities yet, Mr. Hisakawa?" He asked.

This guy was cool! Easy-going, casual – this was going to be a cakewalk. Eddie's smile took a boyish quality to it as Gwyar stepped back and eyed him with appraisal. The soldier swept his arms out wide and gave a showy flex for good measure, [break][break]

“No sir! Uh, least not since I got 'em.” [break][break]

Almost entirely true, but Eddie was still in mourning over the coffee table he had accidentally crushed to splinters after he'd stubbed his toe on it about a week ago. May the angels sing thee to thy rest, Hemnes, [break][break]

“Did they brief ya on my whole avatar dealio, or should I give ya the Cliffsnotes version?” [break][break]

And while Gwyar's hand might have moved to his sword, Eddie's own moved to a Pokeball clipped to his waist now that his display of machismo was over. He had only brought the one partner today, but in all fairness, just the one was all he needed.

Gwyar's eyes drifted to the other's impressive muscles, chuckling. Rather personable, this one! Perhaps character really was key to it?

"I was only told of your avatarship." He said simply, his eyes drifting towards the pokeball on Hisakawa's belt.

It was hard to imagine Terrakion confined to one of them... but for his avatar, perhaps...

He shook his head.

"So, I could use the... 'cliff notes', yes." He said wryly, lifting his gaze back to Hisakawa's own. "I'm quite curious. I've got an... academic interest in this. What goes on in your patron's mind is integral to my personal 'research', you could say."

What made Hisakawa different from the other two? Had personality alone brought him further ahead than Lopez?

'Academic', huh? Having a good head on his shoulders was probably what landed this guy in his position in Sapphire in the first place. Eddie's own qualifications were rooted more in obstinate jackassery, if he was being honest with himself, [break][break]

“Well!” Eddie began with an enthusiastic clap, [break][break]

“Then lemme take a sec ta spin ya a yarn! Oh, and lemme get the big guy out, in case he's got anythin' ta add.” [break][break]

Besides, Terrakion would only tolerate the captivity of a Pokeball for so long. It was convenient for travel, but to be bound by some paltry human contraption was a debasement the Sword would only have so much patience for. [break][break]

In a flash of red, the Cavern Pokemon emerged, all steel-gray hide and perilously sharp horns and piercing eyes. He offered a curt bow to Gwyar in a fashion not unlike their first meeting, but Eddie imagined that the Sword possessed some familiar and genuine respect for a fellow sword-bearer, [break][break]

“So! Uhhh, where ta start?” [break][break]

Eddie paused and scrubbed his stubbled chin. Maybe he ought to take it from the top? That'd probably be good, just to have some context, [break][break]

“Oh, yeah! So, I actually first met the big guy a couple'a months ago at the Battle a' Petalburg. Me an' some folks were squarin' up with some Rockets when he – ” Eddie nodded at the bull, [break][break]

“Burst onta the scene ta pitch in! Actually stuck with me fer a bit, 'til we had ta high-tail it outta there with @/noah. Real bad scene, but at least we got a couple'a decent shots in.” [break][break]

He lifted his hands and turned them to show the last traces of warped, twisted scar tissue across his knuckles. In the grand scheme of things, Eddie was probably lucky he walked away with such relatively minor injuries, considering he had tried to go all mano a mano on a Dynamaxed Regice and had nearly been poisoned by some grunt who had some really hurtful things to say about his taste in fashion. [break][break]

But now it was time for chapter two of this grand tale, [break][break]

“But the weird thing was, Terrakion kinda just stuck around after that.” [break][break]

The Sword grunted dismissively, [break][break]

“Well, ya did!” Eddie asserted, before returning his attention to Gwyar properly, [break][break]

“But its a good thing he did, 'cause our next job was ta track down Keldeo. A lotta the League's top brass were caught up in a lotta the fallout from those first couple'a battles, so I got the call ta head out. I grabbed a buddy'a mine, and Terrakion helped track Keldeo down to the Border.” [break][break]

Eddie's voice began to grow in volume in spite of himself; with a new flush to his cheeks and a glimmer in his eye, he began to gesticulate excitedly as he continued. Now they were getting to the good part, [break][break]

“So we get there, right, an' I'm tellin' my buddy about the Swords a' Justice, but then BAM! We get separated! An' then this thick fog comes in, an' then the big guy an' I find Keldeo, but then, an' you ain't gonna believe this next part, goddamn Kyle Lopez showed up, except he was, like, a ghost or somethin'!” [break][break]

It was a wonder he hadn't depleted all of the air in his lungs at this point, but Eddie showed no signs of stopping, [break][break]

“An' Keldeo was all like bam!, an' Terrakion was all like 'grrrrr', an' Kyle was, like, givin' the big guy a real hard time, but in his defense, Terrakion was tryin' ta handle everythin' by himself and was bein' real stubborn about it – ouch!” [break][break]

The side of a rocky horn abruptly knocked Eddie in the ribs – not enough to cause any real injury, but enough to clearly indicate that it was time to wrap this up. The soldier shot the Sword an accusatory look before he reached his conclusion, [break][break]

“But, uh, long story short, I just kinda butted in when Terrakion was dead set on fightin' Keldeo alone.” [break][break]

When he was dead set on facing the shade of his former companion alone. Eddie had lost some of this enthusiastic momentum, but he smiled still, with genuine fondness, [break][break]

“'Cause that's what he did fer me, back in Petalburg. And 'cause I know what its like ta feel like you gotta be the big man an' keep everyone safe, even if you outta let yer friends help ya with the heavy-liftin' every now an' again. I think we're both kinda stubborn like that.” [break][break]

But, this was all a bit much to be unloading on one guy he had only just met. Eddie laughed and clapped a hand to the back of his own neck and rubbed it sheepishly. Next to him, Terrakion huffed and looked away, though the Stalwart knew it was with a similar sheepishness, [break][break]

“So! Is that enough info fer yer 'research', bud?”

A whole lot of whams, bams & shabams had gone down, as it turned out.

Eduardo's enthusiasm and good nature comes through as he tells his story, but it seems to wash over the blonde without much effect, the man's expressions remaining steadfastly 'pleasant' even as the story takes its dips and turns.

He didn't write anything down, merely sitting back and listening to the story as it unfolded, making mentals notes to remember the names mentioned for later.

Keldeo's impact was another thing he made a note of. He hadn't seen the colt since the last battle with Kyurem. Perhaps it too held some insight he'd find useful.

As the story came to an end, the blonde smiled politely, tipping his head forward.

"It provided some insight, yes." He said simply, not quite speaking of his 'research' as he turned his gaze to Terrakion.

He nodded at it, before turning back to its chosen.

"Thank you for sharing your story, Mr. Hisawaka." He said, folding his arms behind his back. "Now... Let's talk about your abilities."

He began to move, stepping around the other man. Unlike some few avatars out there, there did not appear to be any obvious changes to the man's body after obtaining avatar powers.

"You said you hadn't tested them since becoming an avatar." He said simply as he finished rounding around the man, coming to a stop in front of him once again. "Are you at least aware of what your new abilities are?"

Ah, now here came the tricky part. As Gwyar circled him, eyeing him with appraisal, Eddie started to feel some of that trepidation creep back in, [break][break]

“Well, uhh, kinda,” he admitted sheepishly. [break][break]

Some of his abilities were easily understood and pretty self-evident, but Eddie suspected that there was more at play than just what he had experienced so far. As he considered what he did know so far, he began to count off each item on his fingers like a grade schooler doing basic arithmetic, [break][break]

“I know I'm a helluva lot stronger than I used ta be. Ain't had much of'a chance ta test my limits yet, but I feel like I could put a Machoke in a headlock.” [break][break]

But why resort to fisticuffs when he could let his sword do the talking? [break][break]

“And I can do this!” [break][break]

His hands shifted, and he held them in front of himself, calloused palms facing up. When Eddie had last managed this trick, it had been in the heat of battle, but maybe he could recreate it somehow. His brow furrowed with concentration, and his dark eyes remained fixed on his rough hands. [break][break]

Eddie can now temporarily conjure a sacred sword, an immaterial, glowing blade of orange light that requires focus and attention to maintain.

It started with a few, indistinct sparks of fiery orange, like hazy sunlight dancing across his hands. There it was – now he just had to focus, just had to concentrate on that familiar shape – [break][break]

And it slowly began to coalesce, those little stars growing in number and intensity. Eddie's heart raced as the shape of a longsword began to form in his hands. What incredible power he had been granted; a Sacred Sword that he could conjure out of nothing. Could the partners of Cobalion and Virizion accomplish such a feat? What kind of good could Eddie do with abilities like these? [break][break]

But just as quickly as that gathered light had formed, it dissipated into a hazy, indistinct glimmer once more. Eddie huffed, [break][break]

“Sunovabitch.” He pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed, “Guess I gotta work on that one.”

Alright, super strength was one. Surprisingly not that common— at least, not to any particular extremes— it made his possible limits rather tantalizing to explore.

"We'll put those to the test eventually." He said, noting yet another thing in his mind. "Do go on."

Unfortunately... the list, as far as Eduardo was aware, seemed to be rather short— the next item to be mentioned was listed very much like the last one.

Yet, such thoughts vanished from the blonde's mind as the man held out his hand and... focused.

His brows furrowed. His jaw tensed. His eyes locked into place.

And yet, for a moment, nothing happened.

And then...

Familiar lights danced on the man's palm. They fluttered and shimmered around his hand, before beginning to slowly coalesce into a shape that Gwyar was all too familiar with.

At the blade of the light, the blonde man smiled.

"Sacred Sword..." He breathed softly.

And then it vanished, like a burned lightbulb.

And his smile fell off, lips pursing uncharacteristically.

"Hoh." He breathed out after a moment, collecting his thoughts.

He supposed he should've expected it, but still... somehow, seeing the Sacred Sword of Terrakion, in its pure, orange splendor, in the hands of a seemingly normal man had still caught him off guard.

He smiled again.

"It seems like I am the right teacher for you after all, Mr. Hisakawa." He said, nodding at the man.

He hoped Eddie would take to meditation as quickly as Navy had.

"But— before that."

He turned his gaze towards Terrakion.

"Have you spoken with Ser Terrakion since becoming a duo?" He asked. "It's unfortunate, but its clear you've not been conferred with an instinctual understanding of your new abilities."

It didn't say much about Eddie— such things largely depended on the patron, based off the papers. Perhaps Terrakion expected, or even hoped for Eddie to train in order to obtain its abilities.

"Ah well." Gwyar intoned with a growing smile as he casually began to roll back his sleeves. "Perhaps this'll let me know if my research has been on the right path so far."

Not that he didn't talk to Terrakion on a near-constant basis, often about the most mundane of things, but perhaps a shift in priorities was in order. Gwyar shifted, too, and Eddie mimicked the motion of rolling up his own sleeves. Oh shit, was this where they got to the fun part? [break][break]

“But! I'm more of a 'learnin' by doin' kinda guy anyway!” he continued with boyish delight, [break][break]

“What's next, bossman? We gonna spar or somethin'?” [break][break]

At Eddie's side, his patron watched the men with careful consideration.

"I've never been an avatar myself, so I cannot speak from experience." The blonde said as he unbuttoned his vest next. "But he, more than anyone, should know about your powers, yes?"

Being the source of them, and what not.

"It may be worth your while to ask." He said, finally shrugging off his vest, turning away and walking several steps back to discard it on a rack on the wall.

"Though, let's save such for after this session." He said, before turning towards Eddie.

His hand descended to his waist, grasping the sword at his hip firmly and slowly drawing it as he advanced towards the other man.

"I've studied the Swords of Justice with the eyes of both a scholar and a swordman, Mr. Hisawaka." He said. "I've adapted and distilled everything I've observed into philosophies and techniques that a human could actually use."

His hope was that, if he hadn't failed along the way, teaching Eduardo Hisakawa everything he had gleamed from his studies of Terrakion — and everything that he had yet to learn — it'd naturally draw out his new avatar abilities to the surface.

With a flourish, he suddenly spun the sword around, catching it by the blade before holding out the handle towards Eduardo.

"Would you be willing to learn swordsmanship, Mr. Hisakawa?"
