Alexei had heard about the Bug-Catching contest, and honestly, he saw this as the perfect excuse to look for more non-Flying type Pokémon, because honestly, why weren’t all of these Bug-types also part-Flying?[break][break]

They had wings, for Arceus’s sake![break][break]

Thankfully, he didn’t have to shell out a fortune to buy enough Pokéballs for this, since there would be provided Sport Balls for everyone who would be participating.[break][break]

After making sure he’d picked out his team of six, he then heads out west of Petalburg, following the scenic route towards the Petalburg Woods, where the insanity was going to be taking place.[break][break]

Hmm, maybe bringing two Fire-types was a mistake. Better tell ‘em not to go too overboard, then, he muses to himself as he sees the eventual registration counter and gets himself signed up. Once that’s complete, he’s handed a bag of shrunken-down marbles, with the promise to come back out of the woods for more should he run out.[break][break]

The first thing that zips by is a—he then does a quick double-take.[break][break]

The PokéGear he’s wearing goes off, alerting him that it’s a Flying-type, and he wastes no time sending Agni out after it, with a warning.[break][break]

“Agni, don’t burn the place down, please. Just… try to catch it in mid-air with one shot. Should crumple like a Jenga tower,” he says as the Magmortar emerges from the flash of red light. The Mothim’s already in the middle of piling on the Quiver Dances, the better to be able to survive longer.[break][break]

Alexei has a feeling this one’s going to be one of the more suicidal Pokémon he would be owning, and well, he can’t help but wonder why that’s the case. At the rate the Mothim was going, it’s almost too late to notice that there’s an incoming Flamethrower ball aimed right at it as it hurtles toward a tree.[break][break]

The shrieking that Alexei hears makes him cringe.[break][break]

He knows that the dual-type shouldn’t be burning, but well, that’s what happens when Bug is mashed together with Flying. As the Mothim tries to heal itself with Giga Drain—he does another double-take and wonders… wait a second, what?![break][break]

Now he has to get it no matter what. Reaching into the pocketful of Sport Balls, he pops one up as the Giga Drain doesn’t work on the Magmortar, instead causing him to fire off a Confuse Ray at the damned thing.[break][break]

“Cool it, Agni!” he calls out, watching as the red beam of light shoots out and attempts to save the Mothim from certain death at this point.[break][break]

Who knew flames were that hot?![break][break]

As soon as the Mothim had surrendered to the red beam of light, the next challenger made its appearance—and for a few moments, Alexei’s eyes almost pop out of his head.[break][break]

“Holy shit,” was all he could say next as a Larvesta suddenly dropped down not too far from where the Mothim had been moments before. Without wasting time, the dual-type fires off a Flame Wheel… which the Magmortar squints at.[break][break]

Was this thing serious?![break][break]

Alexei almost let out a bark of laughter as the flames swirled around Agni like they were nothing at all.[break][break]

“You know what to do. Make it a clean fight and I’ll get you as much coal as you want to incinerate,” he promises the Magmortar. Without further ado, the Magmortar uses a bright flash-bang—a Confuse Ray.[break][break]

A few moments later, the Larvesta looks punch-drunk, but not before a Thunderbolt drops down right on it, cutting off its attempt at a Bug Buzz attack… where was it going to attack, again?[break][break]

The attack hit its caster, and the Magmortar was about to drop a second Thunderbolt down on it when a beam of red light saved it from certain doom.[break][break]

Nobody wants to see a Magmortar get angry, right?[break][break]

The ground trembles underneath him no sooner had he caught the Larvesta—were they coming out in droves, now?[break][break]

Alexei looked around wildly, wondering if there was something approaching him from the surface—before the ground near him popped open and a detestable little Durant appeared.[break][break]

“Oh, no,” he says, before whistling sharply in the Magmortar’s direction. “Incoming, on the ground!” he calls out, hoping that the Magmortar spots it before he does—and right on cue, the Durant snaps its pincers together before charging forward in an X-Scissor attach.[break][break]

A timely burst of Flamethrower catches it just before it can take a swipe at Alexei’s leg, and a horrible shriek comes from the Durant. It’s not until he belatedly remembers that this little shit is a Steel-type does he realize it.[break][break]

“He tried to bite my leg off! Agni, go!”[break][break]

And with that a single Thunderbolt drops down on it, toasting it alive. Well, it’s still breathing, just really passed out.[break][break]

Another red beam of light heads its way. Surely the madness would continue, right?[break][break]

After catching the Durant, he thought the nightmare was going to be over.[break][break]

Apparently, he was way off course this time, as a much larger Pokémon with even more threatening pincers had decided to drop in and make its presence known. Cringing on sight at the large, sharp, spiky appendages, he gave an involuntary shudder.[break][break]

“Agni, take it out!” he points, before the Magmortar steps forward and blasts out a flash bang-like blast of light—a Confuse Ray! The weird-looking Bug-type was coming in for a Storm Throw but had been stopped in his tracks because of the light that had confused him effectively.[break][break]

“Alright, bring it down! Keep those pincers away from me,” he adds with another involuntary shudder as the Pinsir changes tracks and attempts to Flail about, but of course, since it’s at full health the attack does jack-shit for it. A few moments later a concentrated, controlled blast of Flamethrower catches the Bug-type full in the face.[break][break]

Letting out a horrible screech, it backs away before bumping hard into a tree. A few moments later a whole host of leaves fall around it, catching fire as a second Flamethrower blast is lobbed at the Pinsir.[break][break]

The flailing gets worse, but luckily before he accidentally starts a fucking forest fire, Alexei throws another Sport Ball at the thing.[break][break]

Okay, big scary bug with fucking pincers down, what’s next?[break][break]

He looks around and spots a familiar flash of yellow—and while he already has a reliable one in the form of Molni, well, surely it wouldn’t hurt to have another one…?[break][break]

“Agni, go,” he says, watching as the Magmortar stomps forward, arm-cannon already aimed and ready to fire. What both human and Pokémon were not expecting, however, was the fact that this sneaky little shit knew Disable, and so right after the ball of flame hits it (and it lets out a hideous scream) the Galvantula retaliates with said technique.[break][break]

“Agni, go, keep it under—“ Alexei continues, however for some reason, the Magmortar panics and looks at him. “What? Why can’t you use Flamethrower?!”[break][break]

“Confuse Ray,” is all he says, before a sudden flash-bang of light catches the arachnid Pokémon unaware. A few moments later, it’s trying to skitter into so many places at once, he sighs—but he has to do it. “Thunderbolt. Even if it’s stupid, I know. But your Flamethrower’s currently out of commission,” he adds with a sigh.[break][break]

A single peal of electric energy falls from the sky, and while it doesn’t hurt as much, it still does some damage to it. “Feint Attack!”[break][break]

Disappearing for a few moments, the Magmortar reappears in front of the confused Galvantula, before smacking into it with its cannon-like arms and dropping another Thunderbolt right after.[break][break]

Another Sport Ball arcs through the air and catches the Galvantula in its beam before a third peal of electricity comes crashing down.[break][break]

While he doesn’t know how long the Fire-type’s Flamethrower is out of commission, he sighs and instead says, “Agni. This is going to be incredibly cheesy. Thunderbolt. But don’t take it down too hard, okay?”[break][break]

With a grunt and a huff, the Magmortar stomps forward and points one of its cannon-like arms to the sky, summoning a Thunderbolt and dropping it right down on the Caterpie before it can do anything else.[break][break]

…well, it did manage a Silver Wind, so that made Alexei do a take two and look at the Bug-type with curious eyes.[break][break]

“Smart one, aren’t you,” he says, lobbing another Sport Ball at the zapped Caterpie.[break][break]

After the Caterpie’s taken in by the red beam of light—well, safe to say that the fury is not yet over and that they’re still fucking coming![break][break]

This time, it’s a weird sort of… firefly ladybug? Or something?[break][break]

He really can’t tell.[break][break]

“Agni, can you try your Flamethrower now and see if it works?” he asks the Magmortar, to which he nods and immediately releases a powerful stream of flames, hitting the incoming Illumise front and center in the face with the blast of fire.[break][break]

“Shit, whatever that was earlier, before the Caterpie… had Disable. You reckon?” he asks the Fire-type, who nods and keeps a beady eye on the Illumise, who gets up and tries to ram her head in a Zen Headbutt towards the Fire-type.[break][break]

“Agni, you know what to do,” and with those words the Fire-type blasts another Flamethrower attack right in the face of the Illumise, causing it to whine as the flames continue to dance around it.[break][break]

Sparing the agony of being roasted alive, another Sport Ball makes its way towards the Illumise…[break][break]
